Mini & Julie... I was told you might have some insight!!!!
I'm back for advice... I'm so frustrated ! Recap my journey first... 5 rounds, 75 lbs lost to goal ... maintained between all rounds w/effort but maintained. It's been months since resetting and eating P4 and I've decided to take up running... my 3rd week of couch to 5K .. I'm up 5 lbs since starting!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! My pants in the thighs & a$% are a smidge tighter.
Typically, if I'm up 1-2 lbs I eat extra clean and it comes right off.. if it's anymore than 2 lbs or if eating clean doesn't work I do a CD and it comes off.. this is the first time this has not worked!!!! So.. what do you think!?!?!? I will add that I stopped my very last round short because I woke up one morning to my butt and girls being gone & what was left flabby.. I'm getting my butt back.. has the running turned this flab into muscle?!?!?! I'm really frustrated & at a loss, please advise! |

I work out regularly.
Between being a weight watcher leader for 5 years and a career in the health field, I can tell you - YES, you are "turning flab into muscle"! More accurately, you are building muscle fiber, and possibly even burning OFF some of the fat. (Precisely, that means shrinking the fat molecules) PLEASE don't worry about the number on the scale. This is about your HEALTH. The health of your heart, of your muscles, of your body. This is about being a strong, powerful, capable individual with energy. NOT ABOUT BEING SKINNY!!! Go build that muscle girl! You are strong now! Toned bodies are SEXY!! Even if your thighs gain an inch, they will look sexier toned, and have to carry you through all you will cope with for the rest of your life. Wouldn't you rather have them strong than weak? PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE do not judge your body by what the scale says! |

Red.. THANK YOU for that.. I REALLY needed it!!! I wanted to be sure I wasn't "making excuses" for myself .. it's been such a long journey that I never want to go the other way again.. ever!!!
I agree at this stage, for me, it is not about the scale ... it is about health, really building a healthy life ... WE are strong .. thx again! |

Good. There are plenty of thin women out there that die of heart disease, whose HEART muscle is flabby. That is NOT what we stand for! We stand for being strong, and healthy, in every way possible. That means to honor our body by giving it healthy foods, (eating clean - like foods with one ingredient), and give it exercise, and rest, and everything else needed to be healthy.

Right on. If you are eating clean and working out hard, any weight gain is pretty much inconsequential. If yor eating is off or you're feeling run down, overly sore, bloated, etc, then we may have an issue. But a slow and persistent gain absent of anything but added exercise? That's the GOOD mass! We want to build that, and have strong and well fueled bodies.

And if you want proof of that - watch when they post the height and weight statistics for women during the Olympics games. You'll see women who are 5'4", and 150, but like a size 4 or 6. They are like bricks. And their heart is SOLID, and healthy. No diabetes, no high blood pressure, no fatigue or heart disease - POWERHOUSE. :-)
Happy. Healthy. Strong, not tiny, flabby, weak, and unhappy. :-) Now go get 'um! :-) |

I just answered you on the other thread -- but yes, the exercise is causing the gains on the scale, and probably also causing some temporary muscle bulkiness due to inflammation in the muscle (this is a good thing, as long as it stays low level -- it means the muscle is being worked, and building. Too much inflammation is another story, but you probably don't have to worry about that.)
In time, your muscles will become more compact, and that "bulk" will subside and leave you more compact and leaner. Keep exercising -- it is terrific for you, and congratulations on getting going with it!!!

Agreed. Being strong in body helps so much when you are trying to be strong in mind and in emotions. One of the biggest things I learned through the years is that when you have anger, or depression, or whatever emotional stuff going on, the advice is to MOVE. Move in any way you can. Walk, run, or go farther and bike, take a class, lift some weights. It has an amazingly healing effect on your emotions. It helps to bleed out some of that pent up energy that we have when anger is buried inside us.
In every way you can think of it - exercise is healthy. I am NOT losing weight to look pretty. I like that, yeah. I LOVE fitting into my jeans and feeling thin. But really, I want to FEEL good, and I want my body to be healthy and strong. I want to do what I can to make this life easier, because sometimes I just get so tired of fighting. When I am not fat. When I am healthy inside. When I am not carrying around an enormous backpack full of negative emotions. When I can move my body with ease from floor one to floor five up the stairs. When I do not have to make enormous effort to smile at newcomers. When I do not want to isolate. When the doctor tells me I have had a great check up. When the little black dress looks like a million bucks. Now THAT rocks! I'm out for the whole package. Not just what the dumb scale says. |
