Any harm in replacing a fruit with an allowable veggie?
I've been at Atkins believer for so long that it's hard to wrap my brain around the fact that I need to have 2 fruits a day. Why is this ok?
Wouldn't another veggie be better? Also, do I have to have the melba toast? I do want to follow the plan strictly but could it be that stuff has be learned about nutrition since the 50's that would change the plan a little? This is my first time and I'm only on day 3 of the 500 cals (and followed protocol exactly) so no loss yet. I'm sure it will start dropping soon. |

A lot of us don't eat the melba, and some don't eat the fruit either -- in which case most people do up either the protein or the veggies -- but strictly, that isn't protocol -- so it is up to you if you want to deviate a little in that regard. Most people seem to do fine with it.

Hi and welcome 2befit!
I did two rounds without the melba but included the fruit from the beginning. I found that by including the fruit, I was much less sensitive to fruit sugars in P3 and P4. I can eat fruit without gaining which after 6-7 years of not having it is a true blessing. This last round I added the grissini/melba, hoping to decrease my wheat sensitivity. The jury is still out on that one. We will see tomorrow--I had wheat yesterday but was too chicken to get on the scale today! ![]() ETA: I also had HUGE amounts of veggies in all my rounds. Usually 100-150g of greens for lunch (salad) and 200-300g of cooked veggies for dinner. That's really an enormous amount of lettuce, spinach or cabbage! ![]()

Thanks so much for the responses and the welcome.
Sooo, some folks are eating extra veggies and it's not impacting their weight loss? Hmmm, I'm sooo hungry that even a darn cucumber sounds delish right now. |

Not protocol, but I felt bad for hubby who was eating less than me because he can't tolerate fruit (except for an occasional strawberry smoothie that I make for him). We finally decided a cucumber with be a cool, refreshing type of "fruit substitute" and it helped him get through the VLC stage with a little less complaining but continued losses. Of course, he's a man, and men tend to get away with a lot more... but that's another post entirely...
