Not hungry and unable to eat a lot, anyone else? Ramifications?
So hard to eat. Anyone else experience this? The first week I loved the veggie and meat portions and had no problems eating them (I don't like fruit and don't eat grains, melba). This week I have found it hard to eat. When I make myself (I don't want to go into starvation mode) it is a struggle to get through it. I feel full-ish (can I make up words ; )
Love to hear any thoughts or experiences with your hunger vs. no hunger. What are your thoughts on increasing appetite? I have been more active this week and been drinking a lot more water. Thought this would make me lose more weight (not trying to lose more but the weather here in Texas has been nice, exception we need rain, so I have been able to get outdoors with sons and dogs). Still down .4 today and happy with progress. I know I can't lose everyday and expect it but I do want to want to eat. Kendra VLCD10 141/127.6/117 Posed on another thread where at least one other person is having the same issue and I replied: So is this a problem? What are the ramifications of not eating or eating very little? Due to being in ketosis and knowing that I am spilling ketones could my body be satiated by the abnormal fat stores being metabolized? I want to hope this is a probable answer ![]() Again, I feel good, have energy, sleep well, and am not having any problems...except lack of appetite and feeling unable to eat a lot if I do try. The Protocol does say that you may leave out anything you want to - HOWEVER, in the long run, you really do need the nutrients that are in the little bit of food you are allowed. You need the proteins and the minerals/vitamins, small amounts for sure, but they keep your body functioning (think digestion LOL) as well. I for one do not do without the protein even if I cannot stomache anything else. Then I opt for the fruit 2nd, and sometimes do a smoothie like strawberries/spinach and maybe throw in dried or pasturized eggwhites for the protein portion - or 2% cottage cheese and strawberries.... all things I've tried to keep some protein/vitamins/minerals going in.
I do think if you get too far under the 500 calories more than a day or so you could end up stalling out and possibly losing some muscle. Do what you can

Glad for the responses. Yes if I do force food it is protein (I usually eat all protein raw but will cook sometimes and have precooked shrimp for convenience). I am trying to eat some veggies as well but not always successful. I will continue to evaluate on a daily basis how I am feeling and make sure I am not getting weak or other unwanted symptoms.
Again thanks and if anyone else wants to put in their two cents please do! Kendra |

I agree with C'Marie -- The nutrients are important, and at some point, you do risk slowing your metabolism down and impacting your weight loss. I often only make it to 400 calories (I don't eat the grissini) but consistently lower than that would worry me, personally.
Kendra, maybe you've explained this elsewhere, but why do you eat your meat raw? Just curious -- I know that many love the increased nutrients of a raw food diet, but everyone I know doing that has been a vegetarian. Not related to the question above, just being nosy! |

I am real new to this forum so I have not explained it elsewhere. I think that cooking denatures the nutrients of the meat just like heating dairy products, honey, veggies, and fruits. I like the energy and the way I feel when eating raw proteins and do not think if one has proper gut bacteria and a strong immune system that they pose a threat. Actually undercooked meats and cooked meats that have been seasoned (so the nose and taste can no longer detect high levels of bacteria) is more dangerous to consume. I started off on the Neanderthin (Caveman) diet (author Ray Audette) 15 years ago and have tweaked and researched until I think I have found the optimal diet for me and my family. I ate a lot of raw beef through that time but it was about 10 years ago (after reading Vonderplanitz's We Want To Live and The Recipe for Living Without Disease) I got brave enough to try raw chicken. It is my favorite now with beef/buffalo next and I love ceviches with white fish and scallops as well as other raw seafood.
I do cook and eat a lot of cooked meats too but for this protocol I wanted to get the most of the nutrients I could. I did cook a ground buffalo chili today in hopes that a "change up" will help my appetite. Oh and I love me some bacon too! Wow -- fascinating!
My family eats very clean -- we long ago put everyone on the Feingold diet (no artificials, low salycilate) which helped my kids a lot. Totally agree with you on processed foods, etc. We do a lot of raw fruits/veggies -- also along the lines of your point about preserving the nutrients and especially the enzymes -- but raw meat is more than we could do! It's just that squishy thing, you know? Every time Mr. Porkfat tries to get me to share some of his sushi or ceviche, I just can't do it -- my resistance to the texture is too high. Anyway, thanks for sharing the info --

Splitting hairs here but I must educate everyone who thinks sushi is raw fish. Sushi means "vinegared rice" and was a way to preserve fish but nowadays anything with vinegared rice in the style you are familiar with is sushi. So there is just veggies and a lot of cooked fish sushi. Sashimi is raw fish. So enjoy sushi and if you get brave enough have some sashimi, mmmm.

I had no idea you could even eat chicken raw. I can't even eat baby shrimp that isn't firm so I'd have a hard time with raw meat.
How do you make sure the chicken is bacteria free? The meat too? (I'm truly curious as this is new to me) Last edited by Maureen in Italy; 09-10-2011 at 01:55 PM.. |

The nose knows. That is the best answer I can come up with. Does not work for cooked meats because we season or add flavor via cooking. I do make sure I source from local first and will get Whole Foods next and I have never had a problem. Only times I have ever had food poisoning was from cooked foods (both I think ground meat from fast food restaurants). If my raw meat or dairy products don't pass the sniff test I don't eat it. I have had some that passed the test but once placed in mouth something revolted and said no good so I spit it out. It is a natural safety measure I am sure most people have lost but humans have eaten raw meat way longer than we cooked it over fire and especially longer than all the stuff we do to it now.

Mind if I lurk, Kendrid? I'm interested what you are saying about the raw meat and interested in your protocol progress.
I agree that at least getting the protein each day is a necessity. |

I always say I "practice" Paleo/Primal and practice does not make perfect; I don't care what your momma told you
![]() I include alcohol in that practice and over the last 2 years have not been real diligent over the holidays. I don't like sweets but love mexican food. I also am not active (which I am really trying to change as well as no more beer for me, maybe red wine occasionally). I am not considered overweight but what weight I have is all the wrong kind. I have abnormal fat stores which is why this protocol is so appealing. I started to cook a little more for variety...this plan gets boring real fast and match that up with having to force yourself to eat and it makes it even harder. I made a great buffalo chili and tonight will be some buffalo fajitas. Probably have some raw buffalo tomorrow. I have added a little cheese and have not gained but I seem to have plateaued so need to get back stricter I think to see progress. I have a goal of 10 lbs more to lose at least. Kendra |
