Increased calories = weight loss? P4
Ok, I already know that I have to eat to my BMR to lose/maintain weight (I cannot begin to tell you how weird this is for me, in a good way!)....yesterday I ate to my BMR but was still hungry at the end of the day. I had five pieces of salami and 6 triscuit crackers. This morning I woke up to a .6 loss....I expected to be the same or more than yesterday morning because of water retention due to the salt...
Has anyone else found this to be true for them that you have to eat at or above bmr to maintain or lose weight but below causes gain? I am just into P4 and trying to figure out what I want to eat. My tastes have definitely changed. I am working out fat/protein ratios and sticking with mostly low glycemic carbs. I am not eating too much cheese or processed stuff. I find I really don't want it. I do however like half and half in my coffee.lol

Yes, I have found this to be true for me. If I eat between 1500 and 2000 calories, I tend to gain. 2100+ or <1500 get me losses. It's weird!

So far, I am also finding this to be true for my P3. The first couple of days when I was afraid to eat much, I gained. Since I went over 2000 calories a day, I've stayed the same!

P4 has been interesting so far. I am adding extra fiber (the kind that can go into other foods and not be noticable) because Bernice is being elusive. I am also changing to eat more veggies and protein rather than dairy because I think that is part of the problem. I have had brown rice/popcorn as my new starches and so far that is o.k. I did have one small piece of pizza earlier in the week and I think that was a no go. I felt very bloated and seemed to retain water like crazy. I am sure it had much more sodium in it than what I have been eating but still it was very uncomfortable.

I have to say that on my 1st day of eating P4 in June (I technically could have already been in P4 - but was scared) - someone mentioned eating a half of a piece of wheat toast and butter - I lost 1.5 lbs. that day - which was a regular P3 day with the addition of the toast - how strange is that? I rarely lost weight on P3 unless I cut out everything but P2 foods (basically - protein and a small bit of vegetables - though a lot more protein than a P2 day) or did a correction day. I was totally freaked out.

Unfortunately, I did not find this was the case for me. I gained in my last two P4's with adding in any bread or bread products.
I'm learning through this diet and reading these forums that everyone's bodies are completely different. We all need to experiment to see what works for us. Good luck with your P4! |

I agree with Garnet...everyone's body is different.
My P3 phase ends tomorrow....since last Saturday I've been doing little cheats every single day. I just couldn't help it anymore. One of my neighbors was moving out so they were having this get together since saturday to tuesday. They left on Wednesday. So I ate little amounts of bread, cake, cookies, pizza since Saturday and this morning my weight is pretty much the same...maybe down a few points. I think my body had already stabilized a long time ago. On Saturday I'm planning to treat myself on a subway sandwich which I'm kinda nervous about if I'll gain or not. |

Jessicaspector I put BMR in the search and pulled up a site that allowed me to calculate my bmr based on height and weight and then had a link on the same site for the Harrison-Benedict calculation that uses a multiplier depending on your activity level. I would link it but I am not sure I am supposed to link to other site.
I also agree that everyone is different. I am going slowly, I am just amazed that for the first time in my life I can eat a reasonable amount of calories for my size and not gain weight. I now need to learn which things are "friendly" for me and which are not. |

Sweetbiella, let us know how the sandwich goes! I am curious!
I am planning on staying lowcarb for the rest of my life, so it will be interesting how this all pans out into P4 and such. |

I stabilized so well after my first round, I couldn't understand why others couldn't. And then I became the incredible gaining woman after my second round--I just couldn't get back to within 2 lbs of my LDW, and the weight kept climbing. It was scary. I did better after my third round. But that's just great that you are stable!Good luck with your sandwich! |

When you guys talk about increases calories - is that calories from lo-carb sources? (Fats/proteins - not carbs/starches/sugars).
I'm interested in finding out how taking HCG and combining it with lo-carbing (possibly high(er) fat) for weight loss? I'm still pretty new to this - so apologies if I'm going over old ground! |

I'm not om p4 but the funny thing was, that when I was on low carb, if I ate dark or milk chocolate ( like a full bar) I lost weight faithfully everyday. How weird is that???????

Some of you were curious of what'll happen when I eat a subway sandwich once I'm done with P3. Before that the last day of P3 I had chicken wings with mild sauce from a restaurant, and later on a chocolate snowball. None of these seemed to affect my weight the next morning. So anyway I ordered a 12 inch Roast Beef subway sandwich with lettuce, tomato, and mayonnaise. I ate half for launch and half for dinner. Right now it's the next morning and I have gained ZERO!!

When I did Atkins the first time around I never used ******, I just ate when I was hungry - tons of brie and mayo. I lost the weight so fast it was unbelievable. I plugged my stats into ****** and saw that I was eating 3000 calories on some days!! That freaked me out so much I started watching my calories and guess what? I stopped losing. Go figure. I have no idea how that's possible but I ate and ate and lost really fast. I thought you had to burn more calories than you ate to lose?

I'm wondering. I am 3 months into p3/p4 and had been stabilized up until about 2 weeks ago. I'm eating p3 foods and in the last about 2 weeks my weight has slowly started climbing up about 1.5 pounds. I tried eating clean for 2 days and the 1st day I lost a pound and then the 2nd I gained and now it seems to just keep going up. And honestly with eating p3 foods anyway I don't have to change much to eat clean. Is it possible that I need more calories, but if so why would I have stayed the same weight for 3 months? I don't know what to do now. Any ideas?

The other thing I'm doing differently this round, is counting calories. I had no trouble stabilizing in my very first P3, but I was about 160 pounds then--perhaps I need to eat less calories now that I am 129 pounds. So, for me, I'm thinking food intolerance and/or too many calories or not enough exercise. I hope this helps!

The last two days I have been eating way out of calorie range. The first day I ate everything that was not nailed down. Most of it high sodium/carb count....corn chips, teddy grahams, cheese puffs....I raided our snack table at work. 2200 calories.
Yesterday I was up 2 pounds, I could tell I was retaining water big time. So I packed my food for the day (I work long days right now and if I don't bring my food for the whole day I will not necessarily eat what is good for me). I ran an errand yesterday and was craving a burger so I got a a-1 burger from bk and threw away the bun. My calories for yesterday were 1900. I am down 8 tenths of a pound today. I am going to push up the protein/fat for today and see if the scale continues to show a loss. I will keep my carbs lower and stay away from the snack table. My calorie range is supposed to be 1700 for maintaining and 1500 for weight loss. This is such a new thing for me. It is a real change to not be thrown off each day by what the scale says. I know that it is fixable. |
