Ingesting sugar fumes...

This week I have 1 cake and 2 smash cakes to do for a set of twins 1st birthday. Last night I was working with the icing, and the smell of the sweet sugar gave me the most awful headache!

It's funny how I never noticed it before, and it never even bothered me before. Guess going without sugar can affect more than we think! It was like ingesting toxic fumes!!

Just an interesting epiphany

that is interesting! I used to decorate a lot of wedding cakes (I had a little catering business) and I can remember getting a big snootful of powdered sugar everytime I would dump it in my Hobart to make a new batch of icing

LoL, It's true. I always ask my husband to let me smell his cookies or ice cream. It's funny how much more prominent the scent is now.

I was asked to make my banana pudding 3 times in a two week period during P2 - I never realized how strong the smell was in Nilla' Wafers - I love the pudding - but it wasn't really that difficult not to eat it - but those Nilla Wafers were something else - they smelled wonderful.

The worst is when you are working closely with someone with the vanilla sugar perfume - and they smell just like sugar cookies!

I smell everything really well on P2. I don't know if it's the hcg (pregnancy hormone) or if it's the low calories making everything smell so fantastic. At least nothing smells terrible like during pregnancy. I used to could trace people's perfume around the building and know where they went like a bloodhound.

BigBravesGirl, I will find some and scan them. It's been a while for me. I can still do small cakes or make royal icing decorations if I pace myself, but I gave myself an horrific case of tendinitis hanging a ton of string work on a huge wedding cake (I decorated for about 7 hours straight the day of the wedding) about 15 years ago and have never really been the same. My pictures are old enough that they are printed out on pieces of 4x6 inch paper

I don't have the patient to do RI stringwork on cakes! I enjoy doing kid's birthday cakes or shower cakes over elaborate-wedding cakes...so stressful!

My son is a chef. Like...a real one. He makes magic happen with spun sugar, things I would never have even attempted. When he was in highschool, he made one of the steenkin' cutest baby shower cakes I've ever seen:

At that point, his piping skills were not perfect, but the concept and execution of the cake is pretty danged cute!

I will try to post pics later this evening. My work is more "antique"...the trends when I was decorating for $$ were not toward fondant based designs. I did a lot of royal icing flowers, basketweaves and stringwork. Apparently a little too much stringwork!!

Wow he did that as a teen! That is awesome!!

...and above it shouldn't be "patient"...lol...patience. I'm at work and my brain has medical terminology turned on

He grew up watching Food Network and decided what he was going to be when he was about 12! He's working for a very fine catering company now. The owner is about to open a bistro type restaurant/bakery, and that will be his baby. He will do the menu planning and invent the pastries on offer. He has a flair for flavor combinations and presentation. He's also really practical...none of the Food Network drama nonsense. We own a couple of restaurants (fast food) but he has worked for his dad enough to understand how important the business end of things is. I think he will really do well with the restaurant start up. It will be more predictable hours than the catering too, which will be nice.

Diva, how awesome for your son! Where is he? Maybe one day we'll be in the area, I'd love to see his handiwork in person!

Amy, I can't see your work, but I'm jealous anyway! LOL

BBG, He's in the greater KC area. I will let you know when the restaurant opens. It isn't named yet, but will probably contain the word "Delish!" with an exclamation point, because that is the catering business it will branch out of. This is the catering website:

True goodness never goes out of style... | delish! Catering

It has nice photos on the "menu" pages. They really do a beautiful job. The hardest part of this diet for me, so far, is dealing with it when he is home and cooks!

thank you! That is so sweet. He is such a good "boy" (23) and has been so responsible his whole life. It's neat to see him getting to do what he is passionate about. It's a little hard to watch *right now* But in the grand scheme of things, it's awesome!

I posted this in the wrong thread....still not sure how! Anyway, boy child's Extreme Home Makeover gig was last night. Here is a pic of his catering team with Ed Sanders after the party. They will get a credit at the end of the program and may be on camera...at least the food will be. Kind of fun. Will is the real tall guy on the right.
