Research behind Veggies List
I'm wondering why the veggies on P2 are so limited. I don't recall the Dr. mentioning any research behind the veggies he chose. It does look like they're all low carb and low cal.
I'm about to have a burst of zucchini and summer squash from the garden. These are some of the main veggies on low carb. I want to stay on protocol if I can, but I can't see a super good reason not to eat these low carb veggies if I watch the cals. I wonder if they tried a bunch of veggies and these came out on top or if they just listed these due to their characteristics...all except the onion, I can't figure that one out... Any thoughts?

I wish I could help, but I've been wondering the same thing. Also, wondering why turkey isn't on the list.

I don't have an answer as to the veggies, but as far as turkey, I was SHOCKED to see that 100 grams of ground turkey had higher fat and cholesterol than 96/4 ground beef, so maybe that has something to do with it?

I think that ground turkey is usually sold with dark meet ground into it to make it less dry. I think that's why it's higher.

Nutrition Facts and Analysis for Poultry food products, ground turkey, raw
This doesn't specify the leanness of the ground turkey, but I used the drop-down to select 100 grams and it is MUCH different than what you just posted. ![]() ![]() |

A lot of people are successfully adding different veggies and proteins. A lot. If you want to be 100% protocol, you don't add them; if you're okay being slightly rogue, just give them a try. It's totally up to you!

Ive been rather "rougish" the last 2 rounds and added in turkey breast. i buy a whole breast at the grocery and roast it-remove the skin and just eat the breast meat. It's so good and really hard not to go back for 2nd"s! I also have eaten diff. veggies that are low-cal/carb (like zucchinni) with no ill effects. You have to try it and see how it works for you! The ground turkey does have the dark meat ground in with it, which ups it's fat content tremendously. Some stores sell ground turkey breast, though. You have to pay close attention to the labels. I like baking the whole breast, though. Makes my house smell like Thanksgiving! And theres leftovers for lunches!

Yes! 2x as long and 2x as big around. Next year I'm going to take pictures each day to make sure I'm not going crazy.

It is not necessarily the veggies so much as the PROPERTIES of those veggies. Many of them are high in potassium, therefore diuretic in nature. I stick with those veggies on the original list because Dr S knew what he was talking about!! I can do without zucchini for 21 days.

I ate zucchini, yellow squash, and green beans without problems - I tried to eat one serving of each maybe once a week though and mostly stick with protocol veggies. The round I did during January was the hardest - I really needed to eat a warm vegetable - cucumbers, tomatoes, lettuce, and celery weren't cutting it. Then again, maybe I would have lost more if I hadn't eaten these additional vegetables, but if it helped me stay on track, I guess it wasn't so bad. You could try one serving of one and see what happens tomorrow.

I've been eating the 99% fat free turkey the past week and have had higher losses than I did the week before! There is ground turkey and then there is ground turkey breast. The ground turkey contains dark meat also and that's why the cals and fat are higher. It must specify ground turkey breast and say 99% lean on it and you'll be fine.

I eat boiled radishes, spinach "sauteed" in broth, and beef w/cabbage, so I get my warm veggies, although I would eat zucchini fresh out of the garden if I had any
