VLCD56 - Thinking of switching to low carb shakes
I have been on protocol for 56 days now. I am trying to lose these last few lbs to get me to ONEderland before P3.
Although I have lost over 38 lbs on this first round of hHCG, to be honest, I am getting REALLY tired of following protocol. It is not hunger but rather I think my body is telling me it wants or needs a little more nutrition. Or quite possibly that it is just sick and tired of all this cabbage. ![]() I am thinking of using my low carb protein shakes as my two daily meals, with an apple with my lunch one and strawberries with the dinner one. This would put me right around 480 calories for the day for however many days it will take me to lose these last 7 lbs. I know I have said "what's a few days more" but now I am of the mindset "what's the harm?". Does anyone have any input or strong reason why I shouldn't at this point? FYI each shake has 170-180 calories, 6g fat, 1 net carb, 24g protein, between 25-50% of RDA of most common vitamins.

My opinion is that it will probably not hurt at all. Changing it up sometimes is needed! Have you ever done the eggs/cottage cheese that you can do in P2? 56 days... I bow to you!! I have not that kind of will power!!

Lilac ~~ Congratulations on your will power and great attitude. I don't know alot about the shakes, but I have read some posts that say to use a low fat shake. That makes sense to me as the protocol is about not adding fat.
I am cheering you on to ONEderland !!!! |

I agree. But. For comparison, I lost nicely when I was eating my ground beef and cabbage and according to the nutritional info, the ground beef had 8g fat per 100g pre-cooked weight.
Thanks for the input and kudos! It's been hard, that ain't no lie! |

"When a patient has more than 15 pounds to lose the treatment takes longer but the maximum we give in a single course is 40 injections, nor do we as a rule allow patients to lose more than 34 lbs. (15 Kg.) at a time. The treatment is stopped when either 34 lbs. have been lost or 40 injections have been given. The only exception we make is in the case of grotesquely obese patients who may be allowed to lose an additional 5-6 lbs. if this occurs before the 40 injections are up. Immunity to HCG The reason for limiting a course to 40 injections is that by then some patients may begin to show signs of HCG immunity. Though this phenomenon is well known, we cannot as yet define the underlying mechanism. Further Courses Patients requiring to lose more than 34 lbs. must have a second or even more courses. A second course can be started after an interval of not less than six weeks, though the pause can be more than six weeks. When a third, fourth or even fifth course is necessary, the interval between courses should be made progressively longer. Between a second and third course eight weeks should elapse, between a third and fourth course twelve weeks, between a fourth and fifth course twenty weeks and between a fifth and sixth course six months. In this way it is possible to bring about a weight reduction of 100 lbs. and more if required without the least hardship to the patient." - I am definitely planning a few more rounds. Lilac, I use protein shakes and have had great results.
I use them 2 different ways: either as a full meal replacement (110 cal/ 25 grams protein) along with my vegetable or with my strawberry slushie I add 1 tbs of the protein powder (about 30 cal/6 grams of protein). I use the ones that are made with stevia:either Jay Robb or Genuine Health Proteins Plus Powder Everytime I have used, I have lost 1-2 pounds. |

LB - Good luck to you if you decide to go with the shakes. I think it sounds like an awesome idea! I have thought about it myself. My gosh, you are quite the trooper for hanging in there on P2 this long. My hat is off to you girl!

I am only considering this because my last 2 weeks of weigh-ins have been all over the place, whereas my first 6 completed weeks were pretty consistent. I am battling water retention something fierce. At the end of the day, my ankles are SO swollen and I have to take my rings off. I don't know why. I don't salt my food and I drink at least 64oz of water a day but usually more.
Having said that, I know the thing that makes the most sense is to go on to P3. However, I want to try this one last thing (the shakes) because I want to stay in P2 as long as possible - the thread about the study they did with Type II diabetes and an 8 week VLC diet got me really, really motivated to continue. If "reversing" diabetes is even a remote possibility, I want to take that shot at it. |

Hi LB,
Ya know...I get really annoyed when my weight fluctuates. I will drop 2 pounds...go up a pound and a half....lose a pound and a half...go up a pound. But the general direction is down and I know that you have heard this before but when my losses on the scale slow down my inch loss usually goes up. Have you measured lately? Also, part of my weight loss process is to record all measurements once a week and I put it on a form I created that totals up the loss for the week (both inches and pounds) and then record my total losses to date from the beginning of the current P2. Usually that gives me enough oomph to keep going. My first round was 43 days and I could have kept going but I stopped because I wanted the benefits of P3 and P4 and I wanted my first round to be perfectly protocol. I also planned to be in P4 for my anniversary and my sister in laws baby shower. I am actually really happy that I did it because I learned a lot but at the same time, I wish that I had just kept on going. So I guess my point is...if you want to keep going maybe do some things rogue for a week or two...increase your calories and walk a little more for 2 weeks...play with it. Then go back to strict protocol. Shake it up a little bit. Maybe it will help and mentally you will feel like you had a break...either that or do a two week interruption. It sounds like you are on the fence about whether or not to break so I am just suggesting a few ways to re-assess. I am on day 19 and I want to go until the end of August so I guess that will be 81 days so I plan to do a super extendo round. To be honest with you I must be really lucky with this because I am not hungry and I have no problem with getting bored with the food so 19 days has been a piece of cake (just like 43 days was). I hope to make it to the end of August. If I do I will end my R2 somewhere around 135 pounds. That would be around a 40 pound loss for me. I potentially could be down more because my average is about .7 pounds a day. Anyways...you have my support no matter what you decide to do. I know that this isn't easy for most of us and being on longer rounds takes a lot of focus, drive and tenacity. Good for you for what you have done! I am proud of you. ![]() Jody

LB - I don't know if you saw this post or not but here is another idea. This is a great way to have something different and still stay on protocol. I went and bought the stuff for this last night and I am sooooooo having one of these today. I can't wait to try it!

I'd like to know how that shake turns out!
Lilac, I know you put a lot of thought into things. I'd like to add my vote that I think it's worth a try. In my opinion, it is always the course of wisdom to listen to our body. You sense that it needs something right now - and if you can figure a way to give it that, and stay on plan, then I agree it's worth a try. And we're with you all the way!! |

Lilac, only you can figure out whether you have it in you to stick with P2 for as long as you wanted, or if it's time to switch to P3 -- we'll support you either way!
I think that the shakes are an easy decision -- they're definitely used a lot, based on reading HCG forums. Jay Robb brand gets mentioned the most, because it's very clean and is sweetened with stevia. Lots of vegetarians especially seem to use the cottage cheese options, and shake options, so I say go for it! |

Well, you guys KNOW that I value your opinions and that I listen to what you say. So, I have decided to do the spinach/strawberries/cottage cheese smoothies, supplementing each one with a scoop of the low carb protein powder. That way, I will get the calories I need, the nutrition I need, and less fat than if I were strictly doing the low carb shakes (2 scoops per serving) alone.
It will make me feel better staying closer to protocol. ![]() |

OK, here's what I did today.
P2 Smoothie: * 100 grams Horizon Organic lowfat cottage cheese * 90 grams organic raw spinach * 101 grams organic frozen strawberries * 6 ice cubes * 10 ounces water * NuNaturals stevia to taste Wow, I loved it! I can definitely see having this for breakfast every morning. The only problem is that it is only 141 calories and the protein is 14.7 which is pretty low for a P2 meal. I guess I should figure out what to do to tweak it a bit. |

Yeah, I know. I was thinking about that. I kind of hate to do it because I have been strictly protocol but it looks like the protein powder is necessary if I want to be able to do this shake.

Yes, that is why I decided to add the scoop of strawberry protein powder, the protein was not enough for a meal serving.
I did use the cocoa powder and stevia when making the smoothie. I added 16oz of water and ice to the mixture and it made 2 big glasses worth. Which is why it was very filling, lol. It LOOKED kinda gross, but tasted delicious! I will have to take my blender to and from work each day in order to have these for my meals. I prepared 6 servings in advance and put them in Ziploc bags, that way I just empty the contents of the bag right into the blender. A little messy but necessary for my lifestyle. I have always made up meals in advance, I think it would have made sticking to protocol difficult for me otherwise. Last edited by LilacBruze; 07-02-2011 at 06:57 PM.. |

These shakes are wonderfully huge, filling and so nutritious! I am a longtime fan of the beloved "fawn shake" with veggies so this is right up my alley! Way to go on your plan to take them to work and have them for your 2 meals a day. And the best part is............no cooking, YAY!!! ![]()

Well, today finds me up a lb and TOM here in all its glory. This is my 3rd TOM while on P2 and here is what my journal tells me:
TOM #1 - VLCD 4: Weight 240.4 - down 4.4 lbs from loading weight TOM #2 - VLCD 31: Weight 223.4 - 17 lbs lost in 27 days! TOM #3 - VLCD 58: Weight 207.0 - 16.4 lbs lost in 27 days! I guess despite the fluctuations, my loss has been consistent and above the .5 lb a day average. And while I do not take measurements all the time, I know I am losing the inches along with the pounds. Heck, I just had to donate my size 18 jeans that I only wore about 5 times! They were just too big! I want to listen to my body - which is giving me signs that it's time to move on to P3 - but at the same time I want my mind to be stronger. Getting to ONEderland - even if it IS only 199.8 - is what my mind needs in order to move on. Now if my body will only cooperate! |

Meh. Shakes have been fine, however, in a munch attack last night, I ate about a dozen pickles and two apples on TOP of my meals.
Am down .4 today though. So I will take it! Hopefully the scale won't punish me tomorrow! |

Heh -- I do love the new signature line, Lilac!
I once saw a woman pulling pounds of butter off the shelf at the grocery store -- she made a stack of 30 or them or so, and proudly announced that this was how much fat she had lost. Hilarious! She did put them all back when she was done . . . |

Thanks! I saw one of 4 gallons of milk posted on someone's blog and thought to myself... hey I've lost twice that... and a new siggy line was born!
Ms Porky, how is P3 treating you? BTW, I don't think a grocery store would have enough pounds of butter to equal how much I've lost! ![]() |
