P2 - Are these okay?

Looking at all the P2 recipes on here, I see a lot of ingredients that Dr. S didn't mention. I would love to hear who has tried these and whether they did or did not stall weight loss!

Walden Farms Dressings (0 Cal, 0 Carb, 0 Fat, etc.)
Sugar Free Syrups (like Torani or DaVinci)
Tuna Fish (in water)
Tomato Sauce -- if you used this, how do you measure how much sauce/Rotel/Fire Roasted Tomaotes equal the one allowed tomato?

Anything else you found that you couldn't live without?

Thanks for any and all help' I'm on R2 and hoping to mix things up better this time! : )

hav e used these too but only like once a round on P2 WASH WASH WASH them and then wash them again and then i marinade them all night in fat free broth and spices heat whatever i am cooking them with and put them in at the last minute(just need warme rd get TOUGH when overcooked)but be aware they retain water so the day after or even the 2nd day after, weight maybe up..it isn't actual fat gain ,it is the weight of the noodles and the liquid they hold ummmm when the noodles pass away then the scale will go down too ..... really helped when my son was sick on P2 once made a chicken noodle soup!

Deb -
Have you used all the 0 calorie foods/syrups/etc. as much as you wanted with no stalling? (Other than with the miracle noodles ; ) Or were you extremely cautious in how much you used?
I have to say, R2 is already so amazing now that I know what I'm doing -- I love this stuff and this website! : ) Thanks for the help!

I am not Deb but will weigh in if you don't mind. I would be cautious with the Walden syrups and such. If I had the BBQ sauce (which is great to dip your chicken in!) that would be it for me for the day. I would not use, say the salad dressing for dinner. I would pick and choose which syrup/sauce I would use and then go with just that one. And my 1 tip if you get the BBQ--I have heard that it is much better when it is heated so I would put it on my chicken (or next to) and heat it along with my chicken in the microwave.

half a can of diced tomatoes.
The tomato sauce, check for added sugars and use 30-40 calories worth.
My personal limit on WF is a tbl and a half in a day, and not every day.
I use torani sparingly, like a tbl a couple times a week.
Tuna, I'd use it in a pinch if I was on the road, but it isn't specifically on protocol so it isn't a usual food for me. I like it w/mayo and I'd rather save my fake stuff allotment for a salad dressing.

I'd have to say lemon juice would be the hardest thing to live without for me, and teas.

I think it depends on how hard-core you are. On some other forums (fora?) where they are much more "this is the protocol, and that's it" they don't agree with any sweeteners beyond saccharin (because that's what's in P&I -- so no Walden Farms, no Torani). Some of these other foods were invented long after the book was written, so it's anybody's guess whether they could have been included 50 years later. It's even controversial whether commercial broth is on protocol, because it contains other ingredients (even ones with no sugar have essences of vegetables, so you're mixing vegetables, yada yada).

Lots of people say that tuna fish was only forbidden in P&I because in Italy at that time they only had oil-packed tuna -- therefore, it's probably OK.

I agree with everyone else on the tomato serving.

Like everything, it's YMMV!

I'm guessing the sugar-free non-dairy creamers are a no-go, huh?

Be careful!

In another forum they had a long ongoing discussion about eating many of these things you all have mentioned that are not part of the protocol. My final feeling on the subject, after hearing all the input, was to stay away from most of it because of the added chemicals. This diet has rid my body of a lot of the chemicals I have consumed over the years and I don't want to start putting them back in, especially during P2. You may laugh, but I actually had age spots disappear off the backs of my hands that had been there for years!

Walden Farms Dressings (0 Cal, 0 Carb, 0 Fat, etc.)
It's just the same flavors as regular salad dressing but with vegetable gums instead of fat to thicken them. the "chemicals" are nothing more than the standard preservative and such. But they do not all have the same flavor or mouthfeel. personally I use chunky blue cheese normally so runny watery blue cheese dressing is a joke, but the flavor is fine so I use it as a drizzle sauce for chicken or for a light sauce for cucumbers. It's mostly water anyway.
ETA: this is the dressings I'm referring to. the chocolate sauce tastes like Gack to me. But i've been able to doctor it with cocoa powder and water and freeze ti so the flavor doesn't linger too long but totally not worth it. I've used the BBQ sauce before but it turned pink when I tried to cook with it, so I'd only use it to garnish, not to cook with. I don't think there is enough actual substance there to withstand long cooking, It's mostly water and thickener with a bit of flavor added.

Sugar Free Syrups (like Torani or DaVinci)
It's sugar free, it's essentially calorie free, you'd have to drink a whole bottle to get a countable number of carbs, so yeah, it probably has as many calories or less than coffee or tea

Tuna Fish (in water)-Never tried it, but I love to have tilapia with 1/2 teaspoon of dry ranch mix powder sprinkled on it. on days I ate fish I seemed to alway have losses...Tuna is naturally higher in fat anyway so I'd be wary

Tomato Sauce -- if you used this, how do you measure how much sauce/Rotel/Fire Roasted Tomaotes equal the one allowed tomato?
didn't use tomato sauce, I can't figure that stuff out in regular cooking , as far as canned tomatoes, I use an amount that seems like a reasonable one serving. and it doesn't always match what the can calls a serving so I always weigh how much I used and did the math to figure the calories. Since I don't believe the tomato serving has to equal ONE TOMATO( where in P&I does it say eat only one tomato?) I eat as much or little as I need for that days caloric counts. I might use half a can with beef, or I might use a whole can if I'm only gonna have lettuce later that day.

Shiritaki Noodles
Yes I've had them, yes it can cause gains, but it causes gains the same way as drinking a bunch of water and taking fiber causes gains. Not because of calories, but because you have a huge honking glop of watery fiber in your gut and the weight of 99%water is gonna show on the scale until you have a BM. i've used shiritaki when I felt I was starving and had to have something to eat that wouldn't impact my calories, or when I know I'd have that feeling I'd cook it with my meat and veggie and eat it as part of my meals all day to help feel full and satisfied. if you don't show a loss the day you eat it, you will probably show it the next day.

Everyone is so different - even in P3 I stay away as much as possible from any SF chemicals except stevia and very occasionally sachharin - except out at a restaurant with a diet drink, or a mixed coffee drink once in a great while - not because of P & I and old science - because I see an immediate SPIKE in my weight when I use them. If you start stalling, those would be the first things I'd throw out, if they make a fairly regular P3/P4 person actually gain -- YMMV. Raven and I both noticed this.

I eat lemon pepper tuna frequently and it works so well for me. I buy the packages, not cans, and they're 4 oz each. When I'm in a rush I just open one and have it with a cucumber, quick and easy
