Our Invisibility Cloaks
So...in the alternate hhcg thread some folks were talking about changes and how they feel about that.
Just this morning, I was looked head to toe (by a female work friend) and she said, "You look really sharp today! I can't put my finger on it, but you just look really great." I haven't told people at work that I'm dieting and I guess 13 lbs isn't way noticeable yet, but already I think my invisibility cloak is disappearing. You know what I mean, right? That "thing" some of us wear when we don't feel good about ourselves? That intangible something that makes us want to fade into the background and not be noticed? That lack of confidence in our appearance. And for me, it's an invisibility thing, not only coming from within me, but also from the way others seem to treat me. I'm suddenly becoming visible to the naked eye again. People (both sexes) seem to see me again. Interesting! And I like it.

Yesterday was REALLY wierd for me. I wore a plain black skirt and a royal blue top. It was a "cute" outfit, but nothing spectacular. I am still 165 pounds and only 5'3" (and that is a bit of a fudge on the 3") so still OVERWEIGHT....just out of OBESE. The attention I received from co-workers and complete strangers totally baffeled me. Must of just been a good color for me.

Well, fat or not, I'm usually about as invisible as a neon sign in pitch blackness. Just sort of flamboyant and in-your-face, especially since I have large tattoos (glorious results of a misspent youth).
But I will say, today I am wearing a new figure-hugging dress, sporting my new haircut, and everyone from the truck drivers on the highway to at least 10 co-workers have complimented me (and I've only been at work for 15 minutes). Makes me hold my head up higher and keeps my motivation on high level! ![]() |

Lilac -- yeah, I don't have much of a cloak either, being pierced and dreadlocked (the glorious result of an ongoing adolescence!) I have a few tattoos, but they are in places that are easily hidden. I had a couple of really regrettable ones on my back, but I bit the bullet and had those removed a few years back.
Still, I am getting a very different kind of attention now that I am 20 lbs lighter -- people really are treating me differently. I can't walk out of the house without being approached by men, men, men. Not sure how I feel about that.... most of the time, I like it... but there are days it feels like a real liability.

2babes -- what a nice compliment from your coworker! I actually prefer that kind of compliment over "wow, you lost weight" any day.

Totally, 2babes! I agree with everything here. I do feel completely invisible when I'm fat, unhappy and wearing frump clothes. Everything about my appearance and demeaner is "repellant" to the outside world. But as the weight comes off, the guard and the walls start to come down and I am more approachable. People aren't afraid to look at me when I don't mind being seen!
