It's great because, like cabbage, it picks up whatever flavor spices you use. It comes in redish purple and green, like cabbage, and is a form of chicory (which is on the original Dr. S list). I just slice it up, like I would celery, cabbage or bok choy and use it to make a skillet meal with a protein and some spices. Here in CA, I can find it at most grocery stores, including lots of farmer's markets, Trader Joes, and Whole Foods. It's something different anyway on our VERY limited list! |

How many of you use tomato as a fruit and then use another vegetable at a meal? I did this for only the 2nd time recently. Am wondering. Another diet I used to be on (diet center) years ago made a point by saying tomato really was a fruit. I think the sugar content is quite a bit less so I don't really have a problem doing that, although I haven't, like I said, except twice - because I'm such a rule-follower-type personality. But I don't want to stall out, and I don't want to break protocol except if I am *forced* to temporarily by circumstances (ie nothing else to eat) .....
what do you think? Done on occasion is it ok? or a HUGE no-no?

I made the chili, but added cabbage to make a goulash of sorts. I count the tomato as a fruit. I've been doing this since day one. Have lost 20 lbs in 12 days.

I did it for the 2nd time yesterday and actually gained today. However, I have other issues so who knows if that was it. I did it again today, for the 3rd time, in small amount of tomato used. I did use one less fruit for the day, considering that tomato as one of my fruits. We will see. I doubt I will do it a 4th time. I did it the first time last round, kind of unintentional and didn't notice anything bad from it. Who knows. Like Dawn, I have GUILT issues, and like Shelby I hate when I break a rule. Although my head says it should work fine, I still hate doing it. Days 4 and 5 after beginning a round are always very difficult for me so having a little tomato in my base and then a whole potful of cabbage with my ground beef was very satisfying. On occasion in the past I did use miracle noodles to fill up with ground beef and tomato. It is VERY possible that I stall simply from tomato alone, I seem to notice that pattern. Why, I have no idea. So substituting a valuable fruit (although I often only have one as I get into the zone of losing with no hunger) for something that is a suspicious staller for me doesn't make much sense, does it!!!???

OMG...you guys! I just made the yummiest thing! Anyone ever had Cincinnati chili? It's kind of a sweet chili over spaghetti noodles. Anyway I did this...
100g beef 200g cabbage 1/2 c beef broth 1t onion powder 1t garlic powder 1t cumin 1T chili powder 1t cinnamon 1/2t paprika 1t sea salt 10 drops stevia (or to taste) 1/2t guar or xanthan gum Add beef broth, beef, onion, garlic and cumin to skillet and cook just until beef STARTS to brown. Add cabbage and remaining spices and cook until cabbage is desired consistency. Add stevia several drops at a time until desired sweetness. Sprinkle guar or xanthan gum over mixture to thicken sauce. Just another version of beef and cabbage skillet. ETA: I just licked my plate!!!! ![]() Last edited by shelbyla; 05-13-2011 at 07:51 PM.. |

If someone would have told me two weeks ago that I would be happily stuffing my face with cabbage, I would have called them insane.
But today I made this with Frank's hot sauce and am in heaven. To think I once said I hated cabbage! Thank you SO much for the idea! ![]() |
