apple day

When doing an apple day, do the apples have to be raw? Or can I bake them or turn them into apple sauce?

Also, If I don't have enough apples on hand, can I sub half a grapefruit? Or just do without?

When I did an apple day I ate them all raw. Just slice and eat. I was all about simple and easy. Didn't want to complicate things. But I have heard others do all sorts of things to their apples to make it more appealing. And yes, applesauce is one idea.

As for if you should use anything else to sub for an apple--the answer is NO!!!! It is called an APPLE Day for a reason LOL. I never did eat all 6 apples in the 24 hour period so if you only have 5 you are still good. If you only have 3, then get thee to a store for some more apples---and get the biggest ones you can find!!

First, an apple day is for when you have been on protocol with no loss for at least 5 days.
Second, it's mostly psychological. It causes a diuretic effect, so you can lose a good whoosh, thus causing much joy and motivation to continue.
Third, as I read it, it's up to 6 apples, raw, and that's it. No substitutions, no cooking, no bells, no whistles.
You can have all the coffee, tea, or water you want up to noon, and then do 24 hours of apple and enough water to quench a deep thirst. Then, at noon the next day, you eat lunch as usual to begin your P2 food plan for the day.

Would an apple day be in order if you've lost 0.2 pounds in 5 days?

I had 2 days of no loss followed by a 1.4 gain and then a .2 gain. I have been eating clean and on protocol. I have either 2 apples or an apple and strawberries (because I'm allergic to citrus fruit and sensitive to strawberries) each day. I don't eat any seafood so I either have chicken twice or chicken and beef. If I eat my carbs it is only 1, never both. I drink plenty of water. I do expect my TOM next week. Should I do an apple day or do you have any other ideas? I think I may be at a set point as I was this weight for a year between having my 2nd and getting pregnant with my 3rd. I haven't been back down to this weight in 5 1/5 years.

Today is apple day for me...and I may regret saying this later (I'll let you know ) but for now - I'm looking forward to it!

I like apples. It's so so simple. I've been really sick of fish and chicken and even my once or twice a week beef. Did I mention how simple it is ? So for now - I'm looking forward to my first apple day even if it is just psychological.

I'll report back tomorrow on whether I liked my apple day as I think I will...and if the scale gets moving again!

Welcome, crstrom.

Apple days are for when we've been on protocol 5 days with no loss.
Losses do slow after the first great whoosh of loss, but the average pounds per day, looked at over a good long stretch of time, are still superior.

Set points can be tricky. I had a longish stall at a minor set point. Could you check your calories on days you have 2 apples, and just hang in there for a few more days?

ETA.. also, you may be holding weight due to your monthly cycle.

This is my 3rd round so I understand how the diet works. I have never had a gain like this before and don't usually stall.

On days when I have 2 apples I try to have chicken twice too and no carbs.

I guess I'm just frustrated by this gain and don't know what to do. My overall loss per day on this round is still on point with my averages for my other rounds.

I hope you enjoy it!! I loved my apples days. They could not be simpler. If you are hungry--eat an apple! If you are thirsty--eat an apple!!! Love that there is no prep needed too! I hope you have great results!!

I think you are doing great!!! When I decided to do apple days, others would say "wait it out" and to them it was good advice for them. I wanted to get on with losing. I was on a timetable and didn't want the 5 days of waffling with my weight to turn into any more. It is up to you if you want to do an apple day. I cannot make up your mind for you. I loved my apple days. It does NOT matter that Dr S said they are purely psychological--I needed a change in the scale because seeing the same number WAS playing with my mind. So I tried the apple day, lost weight and loved it!!! You do what you have to do. If you are good with waiting it out, then do as you already are. If you are impatient, like me, then go for it!!! They are not bad, they are not awful and I like simple. Try it--you might like it too!!!

Fast question - my understanding is that up until noon today I can drink as much water and / or tea as I want and then from noon today until noon tomorrow I get to eat up to 6 apples and limit my fluid intake to just a sip here or there as needed for extreme thirst, right?

Thanks Dawn. I decided to just eat clean today and see what the scale says tomorrow. If I am not down tomorrow I will do an apple day for sure.

That's how I read it, halebop.
I actually sipped 1/4 cup decaf midmorning of that 2nd day. But as you describe it, is right.

Well, I'm down a pound this morning. Phew. I was semi-hoping I might lose 2 but I'm still very happy to see the scale moving again. I'm crossing my fingers that it continues...

I really like this diet even on the days when the scale won't budge and everyone here is so nice and supportive - it makes a HUGE difference and I'm grateful. I don't have the support elsewhere and I thought I didn't need it - but I was wrong. The advice and encouragement here have made a huge difference for me (thank you)

I think before if I'd seen the scale stop moving I would have thrown up my hands and hit a drive thru the 2nd day but being able to post about it, ask for advice and hear that it's part of the process (even though I read it in Pounds & Inches I still needed to hear it from people who had done the protocal) has made all the difference.

Thank you!!

Very happy for you that the scale has moved.

I also am very happy to have this board for support the people here are so helpful and willing to share what worked and didn't work for them.

Keep up the good work.

Just wondering does anyone know if you are only eating 500 calories on an apple day or does it depend on the type of apple you are eating?

And if you don't have 6 large could you substitute medium sized ones to equal the calories in the large ones?

Type doesn't matter and I would eat as many apples as you could choke down.

The 500 cal rule is not in effect on apple days.
The protocol calls for 6 large apples. That's 660 calories.

The only thing I would substitute for apples on an apple day would be sugarfree applesauce, and I'd use 'natural' chunky kind if I could find it. The purpose of an apple day is to make use of the diuretic properties of apples, so I wouldn't monkey around with it too much.

So here's a question. After you eat 6 apples for 24 hours, from noon until noon the next day, do you then eat your normal lunch, and dinner? Probably a dumb question, but just curious..

Not dumb. It is quite confusing actually!!! Every time I have asked this I got nowhere. I didn't do any apples the day after my apple day started. I stopped at nighttime so when I started back at noon the next day I had no food in my system. So I just continued to do a P2 day as normal. That meant 2 fruits and 2 melbas since I didn't eat the apple earlier in the day.

Ahh haaa! Ok, I think I get what you did. Thanks for the help! I don't think I need an apple day yet, but for future reference.
