Grissini?? and good substitutes

Ok I'm figuring out that Grissini or Grissino as some say it is a TYPE of breadstick not a brand?

Couldn't find them in the cracker or ethnic area of the grocery. Found little bitty breadsticks that would be about 12 calories each but they are only about 2 inches long and less thick than a pencil. How big are Grissini?

Found Melba rounds not the old rectangluar crackers. looks like I could have two rounds, that would be 25 calories- is that right?

Somewhere I saw some other breadstick alternates but now I cant find it.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I think I've got a good start on everything else.

This is what I have used. I did finally find grissini at the Whole Foods Market.

Grissini are long, thin, breadsticks (think: long pencil thin). I found them at BigLots by the crackers for $1 a box and there are 24 in a box. They had Garlic, Onion, Original & Pepporini Flavors - all 20 calories per stick. The box was bright orange.

You can also have Melba toast/rounds but from what I understand - it's only 1 piece, not 2. You can give them a try and see what happens. If you stall or lose less than you think you should - then only eat 1 per meal. My box of Melba said 50 calories for 4 pieces but last night I only had 1 with my meal because I didn't want to chance it.

I mainly use both the Grissini and the Melba as "filler" in my meats. I crush them and use them to bulk up my hamburger patties or meatballs and make them more juicy.

Some people say you can find the Grissini near the crackers or near the salad dressings or near the Asian food section. If you have a Big Lots, check there. It's a much better deal. At first I couldn't find them but I stood at the cracker section for a long time and finally saw them on the bottom shelf. I stocked up!

Good luck!

The ones I bought were Alessi breadsticks; they are Grissini. Both the grocery strores in my town carry them and they are by the crackers:

I also ate Melba Rounds (couldn't find the toast); 25 cals for 2 pieces. I bought the sea salt flavor:

Thank you both so much! That really helps.
I was going to try Whole Foods in the morning, we do have Big Lots but I'm usually home and too lazy to go out again by the time they open. I'll try them on my weekend.

Good to know what they are suppossed to look like too.

I was going to say I've just recently seen them somewhere. It was Big Lots. I am glad you brought that to my attention. I will remember now where to pick them up when my daughter starts the protocol.

This is the brand I have as well, but mine are the plain ones. Is it weird to say that I like my grissini? LOL! They are so cute....and add a crunch that I miss that celery doesn't fill.

I found both my grissini and Melba toast at my local supermarket. Wal-Mar has them near me. I could not find them at my Big Lots. Good thing as that store is way across town! Glad my Wal-mart is 5 mins away.

Dawn,
I scoured one of our bigger Super Wal-Marts to no avail. Nobody around to help you there either. I tried the cracker area and the ethnic foods. Where does your Wal-Mart put them, if you remember?

I may find I cant eat Breadsticks, I don't miss that stuff and then when I do eat it I want MORE. Portion Control issues.

The grissini was in the "Italian" pasta and spaghetti sauce aisle. The melbas I think were in the cookie aisle. Now, this is in my new superwalmart, not my old one where I actually did not find the grissini!!! Happy shopping!!

At my stores they are always in the delicatessan area with the bakery items. I quit them quickly because they were the only food that 'called' to me on this whole plan. I wish they sold them in indy bags so that I could just buy one package a day and I'd be set but nope, can't have them in my house in a whole box.

Interesting. I hear that a lot. But not with me!! Thank goodness as I don't need another food group to be obsessed about. Chocolate is enough for me. If you only saw my house.....I literally could open a candy store AND have enough stock for 6 months. It is a miracle that I have not eaten all the stuff I have brought home from work. I don't know why, but being on hcg has just made me feel like I have to feed the world all the foods I cannot eat My kids surely are not eating it all up!!

Ok thanks, I'll try the Italian foods and the deli and maybe Big Lots one of these days. Then I will buy them and probably be sorry coz I can't control my bready portions! I can pawn them off on the hubby- hes handy that way.

I havent been shopping since I started my VLC days- I'm so tired when I get off work I can barely get the essentials done before I hit the bed- very unlike me.
