So Tell Me..

Do I really have to give up my exercise while on protocol?

I am a 4 to 5 day workout person. I either run/jog/speed walk anywhere from 3 - 5 miles a day and 3 times a week I lift heavy....I enjoy it which is why I do it! Am I really going to have to sit out the entire time

I get that I won't be able to lift weights but will I have to give up my runs/walks?

SAY IT AIN'T SO!!!!

TIA for your help! I love this forum/threads. All of you are doing FANTASTIC!!!

The general rule is if you already exercise then you can continue to do so but this is also the theory(taken from another board)
Your body is on the cusp of protein deficiency during vlcd. If you do strenuous exercise...this breaks down many protein cells....in the form of muscles. Your body needs extra protein to repair and rebuild these muscle cells. Therefore...if you do strenous exercise...you put your body into "starvation" mode instead of just at the cusp. This is why many who do strenuous exercise during vlcd have reduced losses or no losses.

One of the regulars here was/is doing couch to 5k while on p2, maybe she will chime in with her experience.

What Kim said makes perfect sense, though.

at MBB!

Thanks Kim! I totally get what you are saying in terms of needing protein to rebuild muscle (I learned this when I started lifting). It's going to be tough to go from my current schedule of exercise to NADA!

Yep,and unfortunately you will notice a difference too.I don't think I've lost much muscle but I can definitely tell I'm not working them currently.

I've heard it best to wait until P4 because if you do it in P3 your body will reset in a way that requires you to continue lifting or you will gain.I want to lift but not be forced to lift or see a weight gain due to my hypothalamus setting that way.

I'm doing C25k. However, I stayed on week 5 (the week behind what I was doing in the program) for 3 weeks I was on P2. It is recommended to not try and bump up any workouts, but it is OK to continue with what you have already been doing. I did notice that I didn't seem to lose as well on days after my runs, but I do know that I gained muscle (or maybe the muscle I had already was more apparent once my legs thinned down). I did tire out on longer runs, so just keep it easy and I'm sure you'll do OK.

I know how you feel. I was training for a triathlon for quite a while when I decided to do this and I really miss working out. But I thought, if I'm going to do this, I'm want full mileage of any losses I can get.

Everyone is different in how they react to exercise on this protocol, but I just didn't want to risk it. It's too hard for me to stay on such a restricted diet to not make the most of it. I miss my green smoothies and protein shakes!

I just hope I lose what I want to to make it worth while missing out on my big race!

On a positive note, I am already noticing that hard earned muscle definition in my upper body that the fat has been hiding!

I didn't know that lifting in P3 could cause you to be unable to maintain without lifting! Could you give me some more information?

After reading everyone's replies here (and the main August forum) I will hold off lifting til P4. I will take leisurely walks (as much as it will kill me to not go at a faster pace!) But like CaTriGirl said, if I am going to do this, I want full mileage of the losses as well.....

The whole process of P3 is to stabilize your weight. If you work out while trying to maintain your body will depend on that exercise in order to stay at that weight. Which is fine IF you never break an ankle or have a really busy week and cannot fit exercise into your schedule. I want my body to reset the hypothalamus without the added benefit of exercise to rely on food alone. Heaven forbid I break and ankle, sit around in a cast for 4 weeks and CANNOT exercise and gain a ton of weight. My advice---hold off until P4. But it is only my advice/opinion, do what you want!!!

You may continue with exercise on P2. Sure. But what I found out was that I physically could NOT while on P2!! LOL. After walking the dog--and I mean I went from a brisk long walk to a short, stroll---I would sit on the couch for at least 30 mins afterwards not being able to move. I was exhausted While others talk of more energy while on P2, I had less. If there can be such a thing!! Anyhow, take it day by day and see how you feel. If you are up to it, continue on. But if it exhausts you then you should by all means slow it down.

Thanks Dawn! That explanation about the body DEPENDING on exercise in order to not gain is enough to make me wait it out. Like others have said on this forum, you can do anything for 3 weeks right? That said, I can definitely sit on my arse during my first round!
