MONDAY'S Roll Call, Jan. 20
1 Attachment(s)
Another week, time goes buzzing by........

Hoping the painters come and finish up the work, finally, before winter returns.

Sherrie 01-20-2014 02:43 AM

Doris, I was going to say you sure get up early but then I saw you got the roll call set up Sunday evening! I'm not a morning person unless you c9nsider staying up til the wee hours as being a morning person. LOL! The kids are off school today for MLK Jr. so we might have to go somewhere.

Sherrie 01-20-2014 02:44 AM

Also Doris, is that outside painting?

Norfolk Mermaid 01-20-2014 06:56 AM

checking in.
holding my spot in line.

mykneesareback 01-20-2014 08:14 AM

Sherrie, yes, we bought this house in July, it is made of bricks, but the front door, shutters, trim and garage door are being painted, and they fit us in when it warmed up a bit here near Dallas...will take another day to finish it.

dh just left for his treatment, tomorrow he has a nurse appt. because he needs some type of gel to put on the area, and some kind of rinse because the treatment does something to his salivary glands. His taste buds are changing already, too. Oh well, we will push through it, many others have, too. :dunno:

Loretta, does John have a schedule yet?

I forgot it's a holiday, get used to every day being like a weekend, when you are old, lol.

Mssarge 01-20-2014 08:22 AM

Good morning all...another "early to bed, early to rise" day for me. So I guess this is going to be normal for me. Which is okay by me as I was used to the oh-dark thirty whilst wearing the green. I know it won't be too much longer 'fore the sun will be rising before I do.

I've the sister missionaries at the FHC this morning and a dinner with the the sisters-without-families from the church tonight. Traditionally in my church, Monday nights are "family nights" so those of us without children/family at home, meet once a month for an "extended family night." It's pleasant to meet with the sisters in an informal setting and I'm liking it because it gives me a chance to learn their names. (I'm terrible about that and don't think it's just because I'm "growing up."

Begete, looking forward to meeting you; hope you're enjoying the drive and our weather and the fur kids are settling down after a few days in the RV. Enjoy the oranges at the park at which you are staying...if you want more, there are several groves around here and I'll bring you some lemons from my tree when we meet. BTW, when you finally reach the interchange of the I-210 and state highway 60 at Beaumont, mark the spot in your mind...there is a wonderful produce stand back on the 60 that has great veggies, dried fruit and nuts. Just in case you want to come back after you you settle in in Desert Hot Springs. Also, in Banning (a few miles further on) is a great Italian market, and a little further on (by Morongo Casino...you really can't miss it as it's the only high-rise) is another dried fruit and nut place which has been there forever...well, not forever, but it used to be a little shanty beside the road). Once you get to Morongo, you're just a hop, skip and jump to Desert Hot Springs...there is a rest area just a little further down, too.

BTW, the native americans are starting to gather to do the rain prayers and our church is having a world-wide day of fast to pray that California gets some rain...we're really hurting. January-February is when we usually get the bulk of our rainfall and we still have nothing in sight.

Well, here comes the sun, so I guess I best get moving. Hope you all have a great day and good things come your way...sending healing vibes to those in need and hugs to all.

mykneesareback 01-20-2014 08:27 AM

They did the snow dance at Lake Tahoe, and it did snow for awhile, back in December, lol. Where we used to live, the Indians tried it several times in the past, half the time it worked. And yes, they preferred to be called "Indians". I'm thinking they will do the same thing very soon, can't hurt. My son in Stockton says they are not watering the grass at all, period.

That dried fruit place, is that where they have those Date Shakes, Mary?? My dh loved that, but I'm not sure as to the name of the town, lol. It's been on the Food Network shows where they travel around for "best eats" or something.

Be back later.

Verleen 01-20-2014 08:28 AM

Hi folks. I'm still hanging around. We celebrated Rich's birthday this weekend. We went to Olive Garden (Rich's choice) but I didn't eat much. No appetite. I am down to 143 lbs without trying.

So tired and I will probably stick to bed today. I have to check in with my housekeeper. She wants to cook for me too. I'm contemplating letting her. Doris, Rich hasn't put up my tapestry for me. If he waits longs enough, he'll never have to. Maybe Annette (housekeeper) will put it up for me.

Have a good one.

Mssarge 01-20-2014 08:39 AM

Verleen, thanks for checking in...we're here for you when you need us. Hugs to you.

Doris, Most of my Indian friends prefer that nomenclature, too, but I'm always afraid the PC police will through me in the slammer...lol. Actually the date shakes are indigenous a little further down the road in Indio, just east of Palm Springs, where the date palms grow. That's also where they have a Date Festival...hmm, have to check when that is as I'm pretty sure that's in February...they have camel races and all things "deserty."

My little highway 60 produce stand, Dowling's, doesn't do date shakes, but I think the one near Morongo does...they sell the dates from Indio and do a very good tourist business, even shipping the dates anywhere you want.

p.s. yep, I checked the date (pun intended) and the Date Festival at Indio is February 14-27.

Mssarge 01-20-2014 09:08 AM

Oh, forgot to mention...I picked up my new glasses yesterday. These are distance only lenses and I think they'll fix one of my problems. I've had a depth-perception problem because of the differences in my eyes since the cataract surgery that has made it very difficult in some situations (like going up and down stairs) and I've been fearful of falling. I don't seem to have the problem with these, but we'll see how it goes when I've worn them for a while. I guess I haven't been bending the head far enough to look through the top part of my bifocals. However, as the tech was watching me as I tried them on, he noticed a defect, one of the lenses does not have the glare-reflective coating so i've got 'em but will have to take 'em back when the new lenses come in. After he called it to my attention, I saw the difference but wouldn't have otherwise.

SuSUN 01-20-2014 09:37 AM

Doris, Thanks for our start again. Hope that you get that painting finished. I can smell that paint from here. Twinges are less today so must have been just a blip yesterday. A kind of warning not to do too much. Hope all goes smoothly for G and that you can take some breaks for yourself here and there.:hugs::heart::hugs:

Good to see your post Verleen. You may get that Tapestry up today.

Hi Mary, yum on those dates.:yummy:

Hi Lainey, as you run through.;)

Waving to All and hope to check back later...

birdlady 01-20-2014 10:19 AM

Good Morning all,
Nice sunny day.Nothing planned as usual, just let the day develope as it wants.
Good to see everyone this morning.I think I'm over whatever I had but still being careful as we all know a relaspe is worst.

Begete 01-20-2014 11:10 AM

Good morning. I won't say the cats have settled down, but I think they do better with the harnesses and leashes than locked up in the playpen. I think they, especially Blue get car sick, or at least wobbly as they seem much better whenever we are not moving. They awoke at 5:30 this morning and made a huge mess in their litter box that the odor woke John and he got up to clean it out. Then we slept in til after 8 so getting a late start for Bakersfield.
Mary, still haven't figured out how to get from Orange Grove back to Rt 10 to DHS, so will look at map tonight and call you. Don't forget we are in a motorhome pulling a toad, so narrow winding roads are scarier than wine roads with mts.

weezie 01-20-2014 11:18 AM

Greetings all-

We're expecting another cold snap up here in the next few days. I think I better look at my seed catalogs again to convince myself that Spring will be along soon. I've had enough with winter already!

Not sure if I am repeating myself - too lazy to go back and look at my last post - so bear with me. DH has gained a bit of weight around the middle but expects to lose it in the spring so doesn't want to invest in new pants. So yours truly dug out an old tailoring book to make him some new trousers. It's not that difficult once the pattern is drafted. I just hope they fit well enough. I've done it before with success, so fingers crossed this attempt works as well.

Verleen, yes, yes, yes, let your housekeeper cook for you! You need adequate nutrition. Can you manage smoothies? You can throw in protein powder and they taste much better than that Ensure stuff. Otherwise, Ensure mixed with milk can be sort of palatable. I have to watch carefully to avoid constipation, by the way, with all the meds I take. Lots of fluids and stool softeners help considerably when I can't get enough fiber. Also see if you can get a prescription for lactulose solution - it works gently, but it does work, and can be taken daily as a preventative measure. You don't want to go back in hospital if it can be avoided!

Watched the new Sherlock Holmes (season 3) on PBS last night and it was very good. We're also trying to catch up with "The Blacklist." It can be very violent, but I like the premise and the plots. Have also enjoyed watching "Leverage" but the music drives me batty. I think I'd prefer watching it with the sound off and closed captioning turned on. It's another with some fun plots. Anyone else watching these?

That's about it for now. Have a lovely day.

Norfolk Mermaid 01-20-2014 11:27 AM

Used to watch Leverage a long time ago on the pay channel and loved it but no way can I stay awake so late to watch it on the free channel now- no recorder here.
How come you got seed catalogs and I don't yet? Dern!
Yeah- Reddington is a brute but I will still watch- it is that good.

mykneesareback 01-20-2014 11:38 AM

Just go online to Burpee's or Park's or one of those, and request a catalog, they send them for free, we get too many of them, but they are like candy to look at, if a person loves plants!! In fact, I'll go to the Burpee's site right now, lol, that's one we don't get here, Lainey.

Hi Louise, you have my admiration for sewing anything useable like pants!

Verleen, perhaps you could ask the housekeeper to put the tapestry up for you after all, she seems like a nice gal. Wishing you could eat different types of food, but it's hard if your appetite is not there for anything.

Gladys, good to see you posting again, you had a rough time of it!!

Begete, I still have to chuckle when I remember your report when you guys drove from Philly to Washington, and your cat had to stay in the A/C while you took turns to eat and stuff like that!! Will you do another report?

The painters are done, the "glass room" is sealed, and now on to the next project, changing a ceiling light fixture in the kitchen to one with a fan.

Susan, hoping today is a better day for you, pain wise. Do you think some of the range of motion exercises could have inflamed the area?

Off to get some more chores done.

SuSUN 01-20-2014 03:33 PM

Doris, Glad to hear that your painting and sealing are done. Isn't that always the case another couple of jobs in the pipeline.
Thank you for asking, not sure what caused that little flare up of electric shock like twinges the last two days.
Today was much better just a few twinges and that rawness feeling. I just took Motrin and Tylenol together every 4 hours to control that. I just take the Gabapentin at bedtime now.
I did much more exercise today and I shovelled the snow off the deck and the front walkway. It was light soft stuff so easy to just push.

WE have frigid temps here again.:dunno: So I didn't go on the walk with DD and Billy this morning. I stayed home in a warm house. I did my little exercise routine in the comfort of home.;) The X' purts are predicting minus -38C overnight with the windchill, without it a balmy minus -28C ;):D

:jumpjoy: Hi Louise, Glad to see you post. I find it so amazing that you can cut a pattern and make some trousers just like that. What a talent you have there.:notwrthy:
Yes, Blacklist is a bit blood curdling but still enjoyable so far. I have Sherlock recorded so to catch up on that one. I did enjoy Elementary too. Did you see that one? I never saw Leverage up here. I guess we don't get all channels unless I missed it as I think I have 500 channels of which I don't tune into most. Wishing You Luck with those trousers. I am sure you will do a terrific job with love sewn in every seam.;)

:hiya: Waving hard at Gladys as she strolls through. Good to hear that bug is leaving you now. That was a doozie huh?:hugs: Keep getting stronger, those ponies and birdies will be missing you.

Babette, sure hope that you and John don't get disturbed again tonight. Red and Blue are certainly living up to their namesakes.;)

Lainey, Will you be tuned in to Reddington tonight? I will, Ha!;)

Mssarge 01-20-2014 05:46 PM

Hey y'all, getting ready for our empty-nesters' Family night; making cheese sauce for the broccoli as my contribution...once a month our group meet and there's always too much food (at least at the two I've been to and I suspect that's the case.)

Babette, no winding two-lane curvy roads on any of the directions I gave...it's your call as to how much of the L.A. Basin you want to go through. I'm looking forward to your call.

BTW, Susan, do you spray your snow shovel with kitchen spray, like Pam? Just saw that suggestion and wish I'd known it when I was shoveling, snow or manure...hmmm don't think it would work for manure. It's supposed to make it easier to toss. Glad I'm not in -35 degree weather, Fahrenheit, celsius or centigrade...I'm a desert-person now and I'm cold when the temperature hits below 80.

Well, got to start getting ready, will type ya later.

Norfolk Mermaid 01-20-2014 06:22 PM

OH for sure Susan, getting ready to start an all channel 3 night with "2 Broke Girls"; Mike and Molly; Mom and then "Reddington". Then Thursday night with "Big Bang Theory channel 10 I think" and "Reign channel 7" Then Sunday's "Downton Abby PBS 15"... When does "Once Upon A Time" come back- might watch that but seems like there is something else on a different channel I watch ????? I occasionally fill in with Restaurant Impossible and Chopped on channel 68 but not very often the past few months.
Can't stand the commercials any more but plan to catch the Super Bowl ones at Mary Ann's party.
Have a gentle & peaceful evening everyone.
Lordy- Susan- that is the very word of cold you are gonna have there...STAY SNUG!

mykneesareback 01-20-2014 06:49 PM

Lainey, go to Burpee's web site, and sign up for their free catalog, I just did, and finally found out our new Zone number, lol.

Verleen 01-20-2014 08:17 PM

:jumpjoy: Sending up firecrackers. The tapestry is up. Annette told Rich, "Let's get it done."

Now we have to put up the two wall sconces that go with it.

I'm trying to get ready for my youngest daughter and two grandkids to come in February around Presidents' day weekend. I'm hoping Rich will rise to the occasion.:aprayer:

mykneesareback 01-20-2014 08:31 PM

That's wonderful, Verleen!!! Your housekeeper is GOLDEN !!!! :)

Norfolk Mermaid 01-20-2014 09:05 PM

Doris, always get the catalogs automatically every year- will give it another week or so.

Sherrie 01-21-2014 01:18 AM

Doris, it looks like you got that painting done. My house needs some renovations but it is hard to find people who do a good job but also are reasonably priced. I joined Angie's list but there aren't people really close. My bathroom desperately needs remodeling. The oldest part of my house was built in 1915. The bathroom, kitchen and a bedroom were added on in the mid 30s. There has been some modernization over the years. It sounds like yours is coming along nicely. I hope you husband gets better soon.
