Does VLC also require calorie reduction to lose weight?

My wife and I are both 62 and have been on a VLC diet for 5 months. We like the food and the cholesterol results have been amazing. But the thing we can't figure out is why we don't lose weight? My wife's mother is 80 and has been on the diet during this time too, and although she lost weight the first month, has lost no more since then.

Have others had a similar experience? We eat <20 carbs per day, are careful to get lots of fat in our diet and are very careful when we eat out. I've read both of Gary Taubes books and they make plenty of sense and seem very well supported by evidence. But it seems from what I've read that you don't have to count calories to lose weight with VLC. However that has not been our experience.

Does anyone have any advice? I'd sure like to understand how to make this diet work for us.

Hey Dave, welcome to the Goldens but you might be asking your question on the wrong forum...someone in the main lobby will be more likely to answer your question. We're a few friends who are following various woe and I don't think anyone here is a proponent of the vlc lifestyle....although I may be wrong (and have been frequently). '

Sounds like it makes sense, tho', if you haven't lost much after five months, I'm thinking you should start tweaking a bit.

The other side of the coin is the amount of physical activity. Dr Atkins says that with no excuses. Hard to do, at our age I agree, but doable.
I find I lose more once I step up the activity, it speeds up the metabolic rate and we need that.

I'm at maintain mode but I am still VLC and was VLC during my weight loss.

I found that I had to keep active to counteract the slowing down of the metabolism that seems to be worse as we get older. So I did light treadmill work in the morning (simple walk speed) while I watched my recorded finance shows and Diners DiveIns and Drives All that seemed to help a lot.

I also found I needed lots of fluids ... not sure why ... but I seemed to dehydrate easily.

yes, as we age our metabolisms slow even further. you have the evidence that you need to eat less. best of luck to you both!
