ATTN: Mary and others interested in vegtable gardening
Mary asked today about companion planting with herbs and vegetables. That is a really important question to ask for anyone interested in vegetable gardening, but equally important is those that should NOT be planted together, "antagonists."

For example, peas and beans love being near potatoes, cucumbers and strawberries, but hate being near onions and garlic.

It has to do with plant disease resistance, which nutrients each extracts from the soil and which insects are attracted to each.

An excellant site for anyone interested in these factors is
Vegetable and Herb Companions :: Common Ground Organic Garden Supply and Education Center

Thank you, Begete, very helpful at this time of year, especially :shake:

I remember when Janie used to do a thread about gardening, wonder how she is doing? Does anyone ever hear from her?

Thank you, thank you, thank you for the reminder...I had forgotten completely about antagonistic plantings. I don't do that much, just containers on the patio...primarily herbs and a couple of flowers, but got this stevia last year and later found out how difficult it is to grow....with my brown thumb it's a wonder. Since it came back this year, I would like to give it a chance...poor thing.

My favorite companion planting was the Navajo, corn, beans and squash combo...and as I had previously mentioned I have fond memories of my mother's tomato and nasturtiums. I've got a cherry tomato plant this year that I'm hoping I won't kill off.

BTW, sometime ago I mentioned I'd be taking a photo of the volunteer plant I had in my cucumber pot...I'm having trouble downloading a driver to copy files from my phone to the 'puter so won't be posting it soon. I'm guessing it's a hollyhock...has a long stem of white, orchid-like blossoms, white with darker spots...sure is pretty and has several plants as I have six to eight of the stalks. Must find a way to shoot it.

thanks again..
