OT: Request for healing thoughts
Once again, I am requesting prayers and healing thoughts for my dearest husband Bob. We went to the ER today and he has been diagnosed with epiglottitis (dangerous sore throat) AND tears in his trachea which may require surgical repair. Since our local hospital does not have the needed throat specialists, he is being transferred tonight to Westchester Medical Center in Valhalla, NY. Please send healing vibes. I'll post more as I know more.
My hunch is that the tracheal damage may have been sustained when he had the breathing tube for his surgery, but I'm not an MD - just a very worried wife. Thanks to all, -Louise |

Louise, you have mine. I had epiglottitis a few yrs ago. So I know how serious it is. The epiglottis separates the bronchial passages from the esophogus. It can swell and cut off your air flow. I'm glad Bob's in safe hands. I'm reluctant to go to the hospital and by the time I did, the ear, nose and throat specialist said I was within 2 hrs of dying and they wouldn't have been able to save me. Its nothing to mess around with but how did I know? I'd never heard of epiglottitis before. Bob is in safe hands so you don't need to worry about that. They will treat him with IV steroids to bring the swelling down, plus add an antibiotic cocktail to it to kill whatever germ is causing the infection. I felt better in one day. Is it possible that Bob tore his trachea during a coughing spell? I will be thinking of you and Bob. If you need an ear, my phone number is still the same.

Thank you, Verleen. Yes, they loaded him with steroids and antibiotics and IV drip to replace lost fluids, so he was feeling a little better when I left. One issue was that they couldn't get their cd burner to work to send a copy of his CT scan with him. He's now on his way with a copy, but may need to do another CT scan if the copy is no good. Oy vey!
I am so thankful that the nurse at his GP's office told him to go to the ER. I thought it was garden-variety flu (which I recently had) but am just so glad we went in. Spinning a bit here. thanks again! -L. |

Thank you, Doris. I'm trying to stay positive.
Just heard from Bob. A resident poked a camera down his nose and is now conferring with his boss. The current options are a) perform a tracheotomy, b) operate for suspected cancer, and c) let the antibiotics run their course and then see what's up. I am saying to myself that the whole medical team needs to review the situation (and B's CT scan, which they have not yet reviewed) and we'll go from there. I will be at the hospital tomorrow and will update when I can. Ya know, for some odd reason I'm losing weight without even thinking about it. love to all, -Louise |

and lots of them for you and for Bob.Patience will sometimes help heal the situation. Don't let the doctors push into anything you do not want to do. Take the least invasive route for a while. ![]() |

Thank you all for the good thoughts and prayers.
I must hand it to the ICU nurses who are just amazing people. Bob had the tracheotomy and they are slamming every known antibiotic into him, pending the culture outcomes tomorrow. His morale seems pretty good, considering. He is not allowed to speak or eat, but is texting friends on his cell phone. One day at a time. love to all, -Louise |

Louise, so glad to here things are going so well for Bob...we'll keep up the good vibes. I have to agree about the ICU nurses. They are absolutely wonderful. It was last year at this time I was spending time there.

Just now reading this....
I just assumed it was the colon "re-surg" or something so I finally went looking for a OT from you and sure enough.
Oh My Dear, of course my T & Ps are with you and Bob. Thank G*d he is in a advanced hospital and Thank G*d your instincts were on target and you got the right advice from his Dr. & nurse. PLEASE, take very good care of yourself- the better to care for your Beloved. Thank you for the up date posts. I read once that prayers should be thought of as radio broadcast and all details up to date and clear as they enter the ethers. Needless to say I am praying for the best possible medical out come for Bob. Lainey
