Doris, no limes...funny story on the lemon tree. When we moved into this place 17 years ago the backyard was completely dead, no grass and all the plants, except for two eucalyptus trees and a couple of smoke trees. I guess it takes a lot to kill those. Well, I started trying to grow grass, throwing water on it, which turned into a fiasco...'nuther story. But this little brown twig decided to make a comeback. A couple of years later I had my first lemon...one lemon that year. Since then I can't find enough people to give them to and I freeze some of the juice to use it up.
Well, I guess not too funny after all. My sister (the one in San Andreas) was a SoCal-born gal and after they moved north, she had quite a few attempts to grow citrus on her spread and wasn't able to do it either. Just not temperate enough, I guess. She had to settle on her mother's grapefruit and orange trees.

Yes, it is, Doris, and to make matters worse I really loved and missed this one...now she has four more children. It will be good to get to know them. Now for sure I'll have to make more trips to Vegas.
Every time you talk about Mel's Diner, I'm reminded there is one in Valley Springs...the next town from San Andreas going towards Stockton and we used to stop there frequently...I wonder if it is still there. Good food as I remember...plain diner food, but really good. Particularly liked their breakfasts..but I'm a breakfast kinda gal. Could eat breakfast all day long. Okay, Michele, let's compare recipes....momma's was hamburger in a tomato sauce with elbow macaroni. I was in my 30's before I discovered Hungarian goulash and thought they were kidding me...

This is the recipe that I used - I picked it up on the internet somewhere - Of course, you can adjust the ingredients as you like.
Slow Cooker Hungarian Goulash 2 Pounds Round steaks, cut in 1/2" − cubes 1 Cup Chopped onion 1 clove garlic, minced 2 Tablespoon Carbquik flour (originally, it called for all purpose flour) 1 Teaspoon Salt 1/2 Teaspoon Pepper 1−1/2 Teaspoon Paprika 1/4 Teaspoon Dried thyme, crushed 1 (14 1/2 oz) can tomatoes, diced (or crushed, whichever you prefer) 1 Cup Sour cream Put steak cubes, onion, garlic in crockpot. Stir in flour and mix to coat steak cubes. Add all remaining ingredients except sour cream. Stir well. Cover and cook on Low 6 hours – check tenderness. Add sour cream 30 minutes before serving, and stir in thoroughly. Enjoy! |
