Hi I'm LA Joan - Sorry - Long Post
Hello - you all. I don't know if this is actually the place to do this, but, I'd like to introduce myself to you all - and get to know you - so - here goes.
My name is Joan. I live in Los Angeles with my husband, my oldest daughter and her husband, and my only grandson - who is 6 1/2 - and the most delicious apple of my eye. They live in the house next door - literally and actually. We added a house on to our house, for them, so that we can be around for our grandson. My other two daughters do not live that far from us (but they chose to be childless). One is about six miles away and the other is about 12 miles. I will be 70 this coming August, which blows me away - cause I certainly don't feel old. Slower, yes, more tired, yes - but not old. I am a retired Speech Therapist/Special Education Teacher and currently am the Administrative arm of my husband's company - which we run out of the house. I am 4' 11" and currently weigh around 190. My top was 203 in 2002 when I had the Adjustable Lap Band installed. I was able to maintain at about 170 for 6+ years - not thin by any means - but do-able for me. Three years ago I had to have the band unfilled as a result of a stomach irritation and put on 20+ pounds. I haven't had much motivation, commitment, success etc. in being able/willing to take it off. So - here I am. On day 3 of a low-carb, physician assisted, new life - again. I started using diet pills when I was 10 - and - with them - stayed normal looking- through 3 babies- until I was 27, when I had thyroid cancer and had to have my thyroid removed. Life, since then, without my amphetamines, has been focused on being on a diet and losing weight or in "I don't care" mode, gaining again. I have been up and down 50-60 pounds so often that I can't even begin to say how may times. I was a long time OA'er, doing "Grey Sheet" or OA HOW, which always worked for me. It's low carb, 3 measured meals a day, nothing in-between. I'm just not willing, at this point in life, to be as restrictive, structured, obsessive and militant as I need to be to stick to that food plan. I had a quadruple coronary by-pass when I was 56, and even that didn't really motivate me to keep my weight down. What is motivating me now is that I am so physically uncomfortable with my body as it is, that I have to do something. I experience angina when I walk (exacerbated by carrying around an extra 40 pounds), my knees hurt when I need to do stairs, and I just have no energy any more. When I sit my belly roll and midriff roll sit on my thighs and push my boobs up to my neck - and that makes it hard to breathe. I'm just fed up with being so uncomfortable and unwieldy. So - here I am - on day 3. And I would like to join the roll-call as a way of being accountable, supported, and supportive if I can be. Hello again you all. |

Hey Joan and welcome to the forum, you've found a home a lot os new friends who will do all they can to support you. Don't hesitate to come and unload as this is the support group you've been looking for.
I'm not so far from you, near Riverside, and have only been on this forum for a bit. I needed the folks recently when my husband passed away and they have been extremely helpful. Looking forward to reading your posts...and WELCOME HOME.... Mary in SoCal |

Thank you all for your welcome. I'm a little confused as to the various places - like the Journal place and the Roll call - but - I guess I'll figure it out as time goes on.
Mary - sorry for your loss - and - you are fairly close to me. We are in Northridge - in the San Fernando Valley. Talk to you all again tomorrow. |

Hi LoveMontana. I recognize you from the Roll call. So do you all jump around from one forum to another? Is one supposed to be about different things than another?? I did the Roll Call one, and I've been writing in my Journal one. How do you know if someone has responded to something that you've written??

Hi Joan, The Roll Call, menu threads and exercise threads are all part of the Golden years forum. Have a look around and please feel free to post.
As for the Journal, I don't have a clue. I didn't sigh up for the journal on Low Carb Friends. |
