Roll Call: Saturday, June 27th
![]() My first Chicago Uno meal - Jambalaya Pizza. lol. Good morning peoples ..... Another month poised to 'bite the dust'. Loved that song. A memory.Went to a Giant's/Dallas football game. We won. One of only two Giant wins that season. As left the Meadowlands stadium the music on the loudspeaker ..... "and another one bites the dust" ... you would have thought we won the Superbowl.Today is a Wappingers/Houma visit to the Chinese buffet. Our long distance psuedo-date. Doris: I will be trying that Ranch chicken. Kathy: Loving learning about the bees. Hi Weezie, Kris ... and all. . Last edited by jezzie; 06-27-2009 at 05:52 AM.. |

good morning-
Jezzie - that jambalaya pizza looks so good! My DH has taken to cooking and loves making jambalaya. He also sings the song (by Hank Williams?) freqently..."jambalaya, crawfish pie, file gumbo..." I am a bit the "walking wounded" this morning. Our little cat Nala, who has balance problems as a distemper survivor, was sleeping on the end of the bed last night, got up and toppled and grabbed my leg on the way down. Yikes! I have a beautiful scratch down my shin and a couple more on my knee. It doesn't hurt that much, but I don't think I'll be wearing skirts for awhile! It is a gorgeous, cool sunny morning. I think I'll take my coffee out back and sit outdoors for awhile before the rain clouds gather. Have a lovely day! |

Good morning. I made potato salad this morning for our picnic at the Great Sacadaga tomorrow with our parrot. I'm taking some for lunch with a friend that lives in Delhi, which is about 2 hrs from me.....I think. I've forgotten how long it takes. Back home and making tacos for dinner. We had some violent storms yesterday. Took out our cable for awhile. And large hail last night.
Jezzie, have a nice 'date' at the chinese buffet. Louise.....ouch! Sheila, why not make your own sauce from scratch. Its really easy, but not as easy as opening a jar......lol. Back to add: Hi to Gladys, as we were posting at the same time. Did you win? Hi Mrsadm, where do you live? Both Jezzie and I live in upstate NY, but not close to each other. I live in Fulton Cty, about an hr from Albany and 40 minutes from Saratoga Springs. We had the violent thunder storms too. Okay, got to shower and hit the road. Have a great one.

Getting here while my shoulder still feels ok. Just arthritis, I'm pretty sure.
Had to move my flowers once and for all into a shady spot and my DS put in my new storm door yesterday while I watched Leah. The flowers will still get some afternoon sun but I have a pull down blind that offers them a little shade until evening comes. ![]() Jezzie that pizza looks delicious. One of my favorties is pizza but not sure I would like the jambalya. I would prefer just cheese and mushroom. Kathy will you be selling that honey from your bees? Looks like a lot of work and some hesitation for getting right there in the middle of the bees. Louise sure hope your leg heals fast from those abrasions. ![]() Gladys I bet several of the others at the Casino sure do recognize you two. Glad you enjoyed your time there. Doris I will have to hunt up that recipe for the chicken w ranch. I am on the lookout for chicken breast recipes lately. Found it. Sounds delicious but did you put oil or spray the breasts w pam before you coated them. How hot? and how long? The storm door is a Pella and the top glass of the door pulls down into the bottom and there is a screen then on the top half. I love it. It is called a Montgomery. Hi to those that follow or are lurking today. Stay cool. We have an event at church tonight, a confirmation with a pot luck dinner to follow. Our bishop will be there to celebrate and admininster the sacrament to 4 young candidates.

Hello to all,
Slept in till 11:30 must have been done in again from the heat. At least I will be changeing over to working in the garagh today but still quite a lot to do outside as well.
I do not think we had any rain last night even though the weather report today said we did... my little strip of neighborhood usually misses out on the rain. I hope to visit the Big Easy in late September as I am planning a trip by train to El Paso, Tx. to meet up with my cousin Cynthia at my Aunt Pat and Uncle Vince's house. Loving all the Cajun talk and am crazy for spicy foods of all kinds. bbl gotta get cracka lacking. Sailing is the Angels kissing you all over. Gardening is kissing AND hugging you all over and whispering to you. Elaine![]() Oh, Sheila- I picked up that home defense last night but those little traps seem to have kicked in- knock on wood as there has been no scritck, scritching lately. e.

That "Jambalaya" song was the first country song I ever heard in my life, over a car radio out on the ranch where my uncle was driving around the vineyards showing us the area. I instantly fell in love with the music , was only 4 or 5 years old at the time. Real Country music I mean, not the overproduced bubblegum stuff they have now on the radio..........
![]() House of Blues has some terrific Jambalaya, even the pizza too, my hubby just adores the place!!! How neat to have a "date by proxy" Jezzie, lol. Lots of people are having these darned storms, knocking out power and the will to go outside for any length of time. I saw the idea to use the Hidden Valley Ranch dressing powder in the packet in a weight watcher magazine, and then in a Health magazine, and remembered I had a box of packets in the cabinet that I hadn't thought of using for over a year. I mixed the packet, 1/4 cup bread crumbs or Panko crumbs, and I put in some grated parmasan too. I'm sure you could to it with almond or walnut or pecan crumbs also, if you felt the need. I cut up the breasts into smaller pieces and sprinkled with some paprika for color. I sprayed the pan with PAM, and did spray the chicken with a touch of PAM only on one side. Very quick meal. If I kept the breasts whole, I think I would stuff them with some light laughing cow cheese perhaps, just for a change, and some spinach, except dh doesn't like spinach so would leave it out for him. Louise, I do hope your scratches get better quickly, painful thing to happen to you!!! Loretta, that door should serve you well. It's a good thing you got the plants moved. Reminds me I need to go out and check some stuff I split into several pots and put out in the front shade on the deck. Had impatiens that they put 8 plants in a tiny hanging pot, that I got for Mother's Day. Poor plants!! They needed to be set free. Gladys, perhaps you need that Casino to help you sleep, all those sounds, lol. Lainey, wish you could move to a cooler, more comfortable area. That heat is dangerous. What is it with all the New Yorker's all together, is there something about Low Carbing that hits New Yorkers more than others?? Yet I'm still the only Californian after several years on here??Hang tight all of you, and have a GRAND DAY. Take care of yourselves, especially Verleen. I gotta get out and deadhead before it hits 98 today!!! But low humidity is our saviour............. Doris

Today's bee lesson - The Queen
The queen bee is the mother of the entire colony. She is the largest of all the bees with a longer and more slender body. Once she has mated she will not leave the hive again unless the bees swarm. She is fed and groomed by her attendants who surround her as she moves thru the hive. A good queen can lay up to 200,000 eggs per year. She is the longest lived of all the bees in the hive. Worker bees have an average lifespan of about 3-5 weeks in the summer and 4-6 months in the winter. The queen on the other hand can live 2-5 years. If something should happen to the queen the worker bees can make a new one as long as there are young larvae up to 3 days old present. The larvae are fed royal jelly which is produced by the worker bees and is made up of special ingredients to grow the queen. The workers will start several queens when needed. The first one born begins to make a piping noise that is answered by those still in their cells. She will search them out and sting them them to death. There can be only one queen! She is the only bee that can sting multiple times. When a worker bee stings it is a death sentence to them as their stinger is left in the victim with part of their abdomen.
A beekeeper can also introduce a new, mated queen instead of letting the hive make one. That way he/she controls the genetics of the queen. As long as there is no queen present the new queen will be accepted even if she is a different variety. Depending on the new queen's genetic traits the hive can become more productive or gentler once her progeny have grown and replaced the older bees. She is usually introduced in a small queen cage with a candy plug in one end. The workers eat out the candy to free her. This gives them time to accept her and get to know her particular pheromones. ************************ Morning all! Windy and rainy today so I'm busy cleaning the house and baking snackies for the pups. Every time I turned my back Teyla was stealing the dough. I'm glad you are enjoying the bee facts. I love to share my little bits of knowledge. Verleen -- If you wanted to have a hive get the book "Beekeeping for Dummies". I found it to be very helpful when I started. As for flowers, I have heard of people keeping bees in the city. The bees will travel up to 2 miles from home to collect nectar and pollen. That gives them over 8000 acres to forage in. Sheila -- My screened porch is the main reason I don't get anything done some days. I love to just sit in there in my comfy hammock chair with a glass of iced tea. Loretta -- What honey I don't use I give away. Makes a nice gift. It really isn't that much work until you get to the harvest. It's a sticky job extracting and filtering the honey! I find the bees fascinating and I would keep them even without the honey. I have also noticed a marked improvement in my garden harvests since I started keeping bees. The bees I have now are very gentle and I hardly even need the smoker. Lainey -- Sounds like you're doing quite a bit of traveling this year. good for you! Love your thought "Gardening is kissing AND hugging you all over and whispering to you". I may have to make a plaque for my garden with that. ![]() Waving to everyone wlse. Have a great day! |

What an interesting story about the raising and care and feeding of the Queen Bee Kathy!!! No wonder you had to order the Queen Bee from California, did she come from Hollywood by chance?
![]() Sounds like the care and feeding of young starlets out here Now I understand why the farmers do spend the dough to have hives near their fields and orchards, it would be a necessity in fact.I went out to check the little "buds" in the bottom of some of my largest zucchini plants, to see if there would be something coming out in a couple of weeks. They look promising, so far. I've got strawberries to cut up and containerize for us for night time snack, so best get in the kitchen. Then it's dish washing time, and than preparing dinner, dh is getting some barbequed wings I got at the store. I'll probably have Boca burger or salmon, I don't care that much for barbeque taste at the moment. This is an extra warm Saturday, thank goodness that wedding was last weekend, it would have been 105 there this afternoon!! Doris |
