Roll Call: Saturday, July 5th

Raining right now. Love to see the rain - but I hope this one stops
in time for the people who are having cookouts. - Wish it had been
raining at 9:30 last night when my neighbor started setting off his
noisy illegal fireworks.

Loretta: Congratulations. You rock!

Lin: I'll bet you are feeling sore this am. Did you get any rain?

Kris: I hope all is well with you and Mom.

to Susan, Doris, Gladys, Janie, xixlil and anyone I missed.

When I was a kid I used to spend a few weeks a year at my Aunt's in Dover Plains.
(Little did I know that someday I would live 20 miles west of her.)

There was a section of town called Oniontown - where the people lived and dressed
similarly to the poorest areas of Appalachia. I've 'heard' they all own rifles but I was
never actually in "Oniontown". (A little smarter than the kids in the story below.)

Was surprised to read that fifty years later it is much the same.

Quote:
DOVER, N.Y. - A pair of 17-year-olds who drove to Oniontown after a series of YouTube videos portrayed the hamlet as a run-down, backwoods dump were pelted with rocks by an angry group of young residents, authorities said.

The teens, from Mahopac, N.Y., about 30 miles south of Oniontown, were recovering from head and face injuries. State police troopers arrested a 17-year-old from the tiny community Thursday and charged him with criminal mischief for taking part in the assault. The investigation is ongoing, and additional arrests were expected, police said.

State police investigator Eric Schaefer said it wasn't the first time out-of-towners were attacked by local residents. "The biggest recommendation at this point is for everybody to stay out of there," he said. "Anybody that doesn't belong there, anybody that's not a resident, just stay out of Oniontown."

Isn't this wild? Like Neighborhood Watch with rocks instead of guns. Interesting. I'd like to go. I'd fit in. They wouldn't rock me.

Jezzie, no family cookouts for you any time this weekend? Haven't heard how the Republican soiree went.

That sister is taking J and me (yes, objective case me as direct object of is taking) to a play at the local summer stock called Totem Pole Playhouse this afternoon. Its claim to fame is that for years it was owned by Bill Putch who was married to Jean Stapleton (Edith Bunker) and she'd play roles. I only met her one time (at a bakery) but she was very down to earth. We are seeing a show which I think is called Underpants.J and I are standing in for my older brother who cancelled.

Yesterday--Wow! I was Mulch Woman of the Mulch Mound. Worked and worked and I am about one tenth done. Boy, it looks nice, too!

It rained the whole time and I was happy as a bed bug because it was cool and relatively bug free. I will work some more after the morning walk.

Loretta, you're back! I missed you and Congratulations!

Gladys, have you been to Vegas? Where is your daughter staying?

Doris,I love tacos. Hmmm...maybe I'll make a taco salad today.

Must suddenly run. I'll be back.

When I was a kid I was afraid of the Oniontowners. Now I'm from the live and let live club.

No, usually Darren has his first cookout. But he has been working all weekends,
until the middle of the month, to make up for lost work on the 12 day cruise.
The PD doesn't have benefits except retirement and plumbing is 'self-employment.'

Some times I wish I could take grammar now when it would mean something to me.

My daughter Laureen occasionally keeps me somewhat grammatically grounded.
When I stopped correcting her she started correcting me.
(I think the last time was for saying Ir-rack instead of Ir-Rock - about five years ago)

Not sure I want to go to Oniontown with you Lin. Wonder why they keep such a closed community? Enjoy the play today and the time spent with your sister. The title of that play is intriguing itself UNDERPANTS. Sounds like it will be loaded with laughs. Fresh mulch sure makes a difference.

Jezzie thanks for the praise but I was thinking about forgetting the racing. It seems to be getting too much for me, especially the 4 miles. We had lots of noisy illegal fireworks at DSs last evening, plus his neighbors seemed to have just as much in the way of displays. Lots of clapping in the neighborhood. IT was enjoyable. They sure had a mess on the lawn.

Doris, I enjoyed the 4Th with nary a nip. We had a nice meal with ribs, pasta salad, potatoes, fruit salad and for dessert cheese cake. I have got to get back to SERIOUS for sure.

Gladys glad you Dh got a chance to win some of his $ back. It keeps you encouraged to go back and try some more. It is a good thing you are on the farm and have room for the animals.

Took some pictures yesterday of the duplex and will get them posted sooner or later. My oldest son is on his way over and we will look as some of DH's tools. No one came to look at the house while I was gone. Any suggestions out there for removing the stale cigar smoke from the place? I sure noticed the smoke aroma when I came back home after being going for so many days.

Hi to those that follow. Have a great rest of the weekend.

I have read a dish of white vinegar in each room.

Sound weird and I've never actually tried it.

Just checking in to "mark my spot"....................

We had lots of fireworks noise last night, and it's all illegal here!!! Even heard some in the distance at 4:10 AM, of all times. Gee, could it have been the fishing people by the river???

Be back later. Busy as a bee here, doing unmentionables. (baking that is)

Love that avitar Doris. Which reminds me.

My oldest son and I took the 3 grankids to see Alvin and the Chipmonks while we were there in Evansville. Cute. The kids were good. My son and I shared a box of colossal popcorn, $13 with 2 large drinks. Good thing the movie was free.

The last movie I saw at the theater was Forest Gump. Been a while.

Lin I have been to Vegas,I went with DD a few years ago.The local casino paid for everything. We stayed at Treasure Island. This time I was not up to going, she and our friend Marie went,I think they are staying at Harrah were Marie got free rooms.
The machine I was talking about is by Bally's Black and White Double Jackpot,it has five reals. You can play 25 rows by 1,2,3,its a nickle machine so max is $1.25,$2.50,$3.75.Like I said it kind of expensive to play.
Wondering about Lin and her mom,did Imiss an update.
We have places around here that is best not to go.Mostly drug areas.
Loretta, that is what is wonderful about our age,we can do what we want.I hear that charcoal, baking soda or cut up apples are good for stale smoke.Maybe one of those things that spray deoarizer every few min.
Doris smoke is bad for the skin, stay indoors. Not to good for the inards either.

I can hardly remember the last movie I saw in an actual theatre...........hmm, I think it was something from the "Master of the Universe", when one of my sons was into all that stuff. I'm "out of it" when it comes to movies, I see them when they are 3 years old or something on HBO. lol There is one tiny old theatre in that other town we go to the doctor in, built in the 1920's, so we haven't been there in years because parents drop kids off and drive away and leave the kids there to mess around. No fun for we adults.

I guess we live in a boring place, come to think of it.....matches me just fine, lol.

I'm glad you know where all those "bad" areas are Gladys, to stay away from them. Too bad most every town has them now.

Good Satuday to All,

Hope you 4th revellers have settled down now...OR, are you making a weekend of it.

Continued helping DH lay the flooring in our bedroom again today. Did quite a few chores around the house too, so got some activity in.
Eating on plan more or less.

Last movie I saw at the movies was Vantage Point, saw it with DS. He lives further away now and has made a few more friends so he is going out with those guys and gals now. I didn't mind keeping him company while he was regaining his health. It's nice though now that DH and I can spend more time together just doing our own thing.

Paul McCartney is playing free July 21st in Quebec City if anyone is a fan. Also, Rod Stewart is appearing in Montreal on July 6th & 7th.

Have a Great Saturday Night All,

Susan

Hi Susan, gee, I'm surprised Paul McCartney can afford to play anywhere "free" these days. We used to go see people sing, back when we were childless, lol.

I would be at the Rod Stewart concert if I could make it. He is one of my all time favorites. Along with Tom Jones, Elvis, Ottmar Liebert, and Merle Haggard. I have about a thousand others, but won't waste the space here. LOL It has been a gorgeous day here, and I've been sitting out watching Mother Natures fireworks. Lots of thunderstorms to the east of me. Hope everyone has a great Sunday. Glenda

Hi, everyone.

Sorry I've been among the missing for so long. It's been absolutely crazy.

Mom didn't come home after surgery. Last Monday, when she was supposed to come home, Physical Therapy decided that she was too unsteady on her feet to go home and that she had to go to a rehab facility to gain some strength. I didn't find out about this until I got to the hosptial to take her home. From then on, I sat with Mom and waited for the "social worker" to find a bed for her. What a disaster. We sat there from 10:45 am to 6:30. Turns out this gal apparently doesn't believe in making follow up phone calls. If a facility didn't call her back, she just waited and didn't make a second call. That kind of stuff drives me nuts.

Anyway, mom has been in a rehab facility 7 or 8 miles from home. She's been in quite a bit of pain from the surgery and they finally seem to have gotten the magic dosage of pain killers to keep her comfortable. Unfortunately, she's STONED! Talk about unsteady on her feet! She can't walk anymore except with two people helping her. She can't seem to be able to get her feet under her and walks like she's trying to sit down so the nurses have to grab her by her pants and hold her up. Her balance is being affected by not being able to use her arm and also not using her cane.

I go to the nursing home at 11:00 to feed her lunch because it's so hard for her to try to eat with one hand and with all the drugs she can't remember that she's eating and gets distracted by everything and anything. I come home around 2:00 to take care of Sassy (thank goodness my neighbor's daugher is puppy sitting for me) and then go back around 4:00 to feed her dinner.

I've been trying to get her to eat by herself because I don't want her to get into the habit of me spoon feeding her. It takes a lot longer that way, but I don't want her to become helpless.

Today was the first time she moved her left arm without moaning, so I guess they have the pain pills right but it sure is scarey seeing Mom so zonked out.

So far, physical therapy, the reason she's in the nursing home to begin with, has been reduced to trying to get her to walk, which she can't do and getting her to wiggle her fingers. And all of this for only $2499 a week and it's not covered by Medicare. I'm not sure why it's not and have to take on that little problem real soon, too.

Oh, well. Life goes on and I'm just putting one foot in front of the other and keep moving on.

I'm tired!

I'll try to be better about posting. I've missed all of you!

k

P.S. I've lost another two pounds I'm sure do to all of the running around I've been doing so I guess this whole ordeal has a bit of a silver lining.
