WOE: YOU:on a Diet - Dr. Oz
Start Date: 04/22/07 - lightbulb; started YOU forthwith
Exercise: May 11th - May 17th

Newswise — “Ho ho, ha ha ha,” students in a fitness class at the University of Michigan Health System chant repeatedly while clapping their hands and walking around the room.

They’re just getting warmed up; in the next half-hour, they will stretch their muscles and work on breathing exercises. They’ll also laugh for most of the 30 minutes, from self-conscious giggles to uninhibited belly laughs. All in the name of fitness.

This is a “laughter yoga” course, part of a growing trend in parts of the United States, India and other countries. The students are re-learning something children already know instinctively: that laughter makes you feel better.

“Kids laugh about 400 times a day, and adults only about 15,” notes Barb Fisher, a certified laughter yoga leader and the instructor of this class offered by the U-M Health System’s MFit health promotion division. “Laughter is a gift that has been given to us to make us feel better.”

Fisher teaches her students that not only is it fun to laugh, but that laughter yoga (also known as hasya yoga) can provide many health benefits:
• Help to reduce stress
• Enhance the immune system
• Strengthen cardiovascular functions
• Oxygenate the body by boosting the respiratory system
• Improve circulation
• Tone muscles
• Help with digestion and constipation

I've always believed that laughing a lot was part of my secret to good health.
However I refuse to start counting my laughs - unless they invent a laughometor.

Yesterday I did my prescribed YOU minimum. Thirty minutes. Plus walking around Jamie's
property.
(Looking at all things colorful and harmonious.)

Have a Happy Mothers Day

I'm sure lauging does help one to feel better. I had to really at your joke this morning Jezzie. It just so happens that I gave 2 recipe plastic files to one of DH's DD. She had overlooked them and I'm sure she will appreciate the recipes in both her mom and dads hand writing.

Will walk later if I feel a need, otherwise no activity.

That avitar is a picture of part of the road I walk. Right now that seems to be my status, at a fork in the road.

I'm a big Robert Frost fan. My favorite is Mending Wall. This is my second favorite.
(Following the road less traveled may not be as prudent at 65 as at 45).

The Road Not Taken

TWO roads diverged in a yellow wood,
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the undergrowth;

Then took the other, as just as fair,
And having perhaps the better claim,
Because it was grassy and wanted wear;
Though as for that the passing there
Had worn them really about the same,

And both that morning equally lay
In leaves no step had trodden black.
Oh, I kept the first for another day!
Yet knowing how way leads on to way,
I doubted if I should ever come back.

I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I—
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.

Up quite a few pounds so gotta get back at it.

Glad to be back with you all again.

I too feel I am stuck at the fork, and don't want to take either one of them right now. Loretta, I love your avatar though. Wish I had a poster of it.

I did the bike 2 hrs and then some, forgot exactly because of "stuff", had to jump off the bike to help dh with his strained or broken knuckle, recently discovered.........we tried to splint it with a fudgesicle stick.

Did my weights in the kitchen while dh slept, then got 2 long phone calls so had to rush to finish stuff for dinner. Still rushing, gotta take my shower really quick too.

See you all tomorrow!!

It's forks in our life make for "what if'" questions - but I try not to second guess my choices.

Except maybe the choice to skip my walk yesterday. So I'm doing thirty-five a day this week.
That should make up for it ..... maybe.

Hi Everyone! I'm back from my surgery and all is well! I have the ok to gently exercise so I'll do some careful pedaling on the indoor bike starting tomorrow. DH brought it upstairs to the livingroom for me before he went out of town. DS is here today keeping an eye on me and getting the lawn mowed.

I'm off for a nap now....

Thanks Jezzie and Loretta....I'm enjoying my time recovering so far! Movies and the laptop! Not too much discomfort but I've got painkillers for the next couple of days and I'll be taking them...no sense being miserable!

The dr. said I need to keep some movement going so I figure if I pedal slow I'll be fine. But that can wait till tomorrow. And I won't be doing weights for a few weeks but maybe some gentle arm exercises with really light weights. He's ok with that as long as I use good judgement. And I will definitely be very careful....don't need a relapse when it's finally starting to be nice outside!

Linda, so glad your surgery is over now and you can recover.

I didn't do any exercise yesterday except cooking and yaking with family.

Today I'm back to it though. Got 40 min. walking done.

Susan, welcome home buddy!

Jezzie, I liked reading it again. The Road Not Taken

Loretta, I would think you'd need less freezer space too. Do your kids come visit like John's did?

Doris, what did DH find out at the Dr. this morning? Broken finger or sprained?

Glad you are back home and taking it easy for awhile Linda!!

I only got in 45 min. on the bike this AM. Did some weights in the afternoon, kitchen chores in between. Had a neighbor visit whose wife is very ill, so we had our "caregiver" session out front for quite awhile.

Julie, true to form, dh refused to check in with his primary doctor today, says he will show his hand/finger/knuckle to the doctor in Sacramento tomorrow. Then he says he has had chills all night and today, so is worried about that too.

I did some line dancing stuff earlier, but no more than 20 min of that. That's it for me for today.

I can imagine you not needing two fridges Loretta. We also have two fridges and a freezer out in the garage.

See you guys tomorrow night hopefully.

Forget the plastic surgery. Here's a simple, cheap way to get back your youth: Start walking.

People who regularly lace up their walking shoes and get moving may be as much as 10 years younger than their couch-potato peers. Still sitting down? Read on.

Your aerobic power (read your body's ability to take in the maximum amount of oxygen) declines as you age. So, over time, you simply don't have the same energy as you used to.

But here's the good news: Research shows that regular aerobic exercise, such as walking, can boost your aerobic fitness so much that it's like being 10 years younger!

Hmmm ... Maybe some young 55 year old will wink at me in Hannafords if I keep walking.

Good Morning Everyone! I'm feeling better today. More like I'm just sore from a new workout. I'll continue be careful and not overdo but I'm doing a lot better than I expected.

I'm going to do some careful pedaling on the indoor bike soon. And I'm going to review some of my workout dvds to find a few upper body exercises that I can do with hand weights till I can get back to my regular weights stuff. If I can finding something I like, I will start doing them tomorrow so I stay on my regular schedule for weights.

With the price of gas I think some are considering biking around. Good idea. Wonder what kind of bike I need. would like to be able to do about 15 miles. How long will that take?

Jezzie watch those younger men. You might get some whistles too.

Exercise workout upper and lower body 30 min.
walk 3.12 miles.

Hi to all of you..... I hope to be posting more often .....

Exercise: Yesterday... (Monday)
38 min. wdights (the upper body firm weight workout)
30 min rebounding workout
mowed the back yard 1/2 with a push mower and the other 1/2 with the electric mower
stretching and deep breathing exercises

Today (Tuesday)
15 min stepper workout (a videohiker tape hiking in the Swiss Alps) hadn't done this workout in a long while and wow... I will have a sore behind tomorrow
lower body weights (squats, toe raises, dead lifts)
20 min stationary bike

Wow.... some of you are serious bike riders. (smile) My butt gets sore on that stupid seat and I even have a gel thing on the seat that should make it more comfortable. LOL
I end up with numb butt by the time I am thru... biked to an exercise video that is of Hawaii to help make the time fly.

Still going to do some ab work and stretching... sore from the weight workout yesterday.

Keep up the good work everyone. (smile)

No formal exercise yet today.

I did take DGD to the little park and we walked there and back, so got out for a little while. Have some chores to do, seems I have been doing them since we got back so some activity at least.

I hope to join a walking club tomorrow night it starts at 6pm. and they also meet on Sunday mornings at 10a.m. so twice a week should help me get some alternative exercise.

Your workouts sound terrific WTGGs!

I did a half hour on the indoor bike today and it went well. I kept the speed slower and still got a good workout.

Loretta, the length of time it takes for any bike ride depends on a lot of things. The terrain, the wind, the traffic, the bike and the fitness level of the rider. For me, it takes about an hour and a half because every route around here is hilly and it's almost always windy. I think I could do it faster if I was thinner, too.

Noreen, the only thing that helps the sore bottom from the bike seat is more consistent riding. Usually the gel seat covers make it worse instead of better. My indoor bike is really an outdoor bike on a training stand so that I can stay used to the seat during the winter when I can't ride outside. That way in the spring when I start riding again outdoors, I don't have to deal with the sore bottom!

Yeah Linda, that's a good tip to anyone wanting to ride indoors or outside, do it often, you have to "harden" up your butt!! dh and I still use our little pillow, and we have been doing this for years. Plus, do it in increments at first. I started out doing 7 min the first day, my butt was sore allright, but each day I added some time. That is one of the reasons I do 20 min. sets, so I get off the bike and go to the kitchen for my coffee sips. I rarely sit on the bike for a whole hour for example. Something would have to be really keeping my attention on the tv for me to do that.

After all THAT, I didn't do anything today. We drove off at 6 AM for Sacramento, only got out twice to give dh his morning pills and use the potty at the rest areas. Did walk from the top of the parking garage at UC Davis, and after the doctor appt and stuff, we walked to the hospital because dh wanted to go up to the transplant unit to talk to some of the nurses. They were so happy to see him talking nicely this time, and having hair on his head and face, lol.

Wednesday is UEFA cup day, so I'll be on the bike per usual. We bought plants today also, so will be planting flowers.

Doris, I usually only do a half hour on the inside bike because even though I don't hurt to sit longer, I get nuts trying to keep up the speed I have to keep for my workout. When I bike outside, I can vary the speed and I can stand up a little to get the circulation back so I can ride for a couple of hours without too much discomfort.

I'm thinking because I have to ride slower this week and maybe next week, I will do a morning and afternoon ride. That will get me more miles for my indoor mile goal, too.
