Warmer vs Cooler shades.
Can anyone explain to me how to tell if I am in the warmer or cooler shade/hair category?

Jennifer,
I have no idea but to me, I think it might be warmer but it is based on my observation. You have beautiful olive skin so I think corals, browns, greens, would be great on you. Red as well so long as it has orange tones and not blue. Blue tones would be cool. You looked absolutely beautiful in the photo you have on facebook, you are with someone and you were wearing a coral colored scarf and your face/makeup/hair were perfect. I think you are wonderful as is. I know there is some specific way of determining this but I don't know it. Plus, the older I get, the more I am taking on a "I don't give a damn" attitude. Yup, blue eyeliner is passe, but I love it and while it may not be the bright blue of my younger years, I love it. I know with my red hair now, I had to have my hairdresser teach me what colors to use, he is a former drag queen who performed on stage -- he showed me pictures and he was beautiful. So as much as I love red lipstick, I have to be careful that it doesn't clash too much with my hair, but otherwise, all the eyeshadows that I wore before I still wear. ' I know this is much help. |

I found this:
Are You "Warm" or Are You "Cool" Most of us would like to think we are both warm and cool. But when it comes to hair color, it's important to know which one you really are (and it has nothing to do with your fantastic personality). You're likely a "warm" if you have golden, olive or dark skin and brown or dark eyes (most Latinas, Asians and African Americans fall into this category). "Warm" women tan easily and the veins in their inner wrists are green. You're a "cool" if you have fair skin and blue or green eyes, you burn before you tan and the veins in your wrists run blue. If you're confused because you sometimes burn, sometimes tan, you likely skew warm. Once you know if you're a warm or cool, you'll better know what shades of color look good with your skin tone.

I think it can be tough to tell sometimes. Look at the clothing colors you typically wear a lot and see if there's a trend towards warmer or cooler colors.
For hair though, especially if you're looking at highlights or similar, I think that those with darker hair and features tend to look better in warmer shades. I've seen cool black colored hair, but that tends to be on people with very pale (and cool) complexions. Think Winona Ryder. If you're looking for a highlighting or even all all over shade, I would go with a warmer color. Golden brown, auburn, chestnut, caramel, that type of thing. I think most dark haired people look best with a rich color next to their skin.

lol, the advice to look to your closet reminded me of something that happened years ago. A group of ladies where I worked went to a color analyst. Sue protested mightily when told she was Cool - she always believed she was Warm. Mary was stunned when told she was Warm - she believed she was Cool. They were the same size, so they lent each other an outfit and wore them to work just to see if it mattered.
I dropped by their offices late that afternoon. Sue had received 47 "Oh, what have you done? You look so good today!" Mary got - get this - 78. People they usually just nodded to in passing were stopping and exclaiming their beauty. Friends were trying to figure out what they had done - have you lost weight? were you ill? You look so radiant today! They swapped wardrobes.
