Lactose intolerance not so bad?

Lactose intolerance causes symptoms a lot like the effects of some sugar alcohols--gas, etc. And for a similar reason --the small intestines can't digest it. So, if the symptoms aren't that bad, is it actually better not to take lactase tablets, to avoid processing the lactose (because I'm sure not giving up cheese and cream)?
