Can the high dose flu shot raise WBC's?

I took my Mom to the local drugstore chain for her flu shot and they told us that since she's over 65, they were giving her the high dose flu shot. About a week after the shot I took her for her every-other-week blood test at her oncologist's office (she's a stomach cancer survivor), and her WBC's were elevated at 11.4 (high end of normal is 10.8). The nurses immediately had her do a urine sample, they swabbed her throat, took more blood from her arm and also took blood from her port to send out to be tested for infection. I'm worried with all sorts of scary scenarios going through my head. Does anyone know if the flu vaccine...especially the high dose...can raise WBC's? They asked if my Mother was taking steroids which she isn't, but they didn't ask if she had the flu shot. I'm calling the office on Monday for the test results and will ask then, but in the meantime, I'm wondering if anyone here knows. Thank you!

All the tests for a possible infection were negative. I take her back on Wednesday to have another CBC blood test. Hopefully, the WBC results will be back to normal. If not....I don't want to consider that yet.

Thank you for asking, gotsomeold.

I have horrific reactions to flu shots. In the worst one I had fever, chills, muscle pain - basically I had the flu - for three weeks. So, I would not be shocked if your Mother's WBC elevation was related to the inoculation. But I am glad you are having it thoroughly checked. Let us know what happens.

Thanks, g. Sorry about your bad reaction to the flu; my Mom actually had no obvious side effects. Will post after her next blood test.

Her WBC's are back to normal. The nurse said it could've been due to the high dose flu shot...or not...they don't know. So, that was two weeks of me worrying that something bad was happening. When someone is a cancer survivor, there's always a fear there. I need to calm down.
