What does blood glucose level show?

I got myself a blood glucose meter as my weight loss is very slow. Ketostix show I'm in ketosis and was curios about glucose levels - fasting levels are 4.7 but I've read it should be 1-3 mmol. Can anyone help shed light on this?

the converter I see online says 4.7 = 85 in US measurement, squarely a good reading.

1-3 would be 18-54, WAY TOO LOW. the meter starts beeping you have a crisis going on when it goes under 60... 18 would be a deep coma with probably permanent brain damage, I am pretty sure

unless I am missing something, that can't be the standard.

you know there are different standards for long term A1c and immediate readings. is it possible you confused them?

good luck.

I read it on the website Precision Xtra vs. NovaMax Plus: Ketone Meter Evaluation Jimmy Moore's Livin' La Vida Low Carb Blog

"the optimal level for producing an appropriate level of beta-hydroxybutyrate to commence fat-burning and to serve as an excellent alternative fuel source for your brain and body for optimal performance according to what Dr. Stephen Phinney and Dr. Jeff Volek outline so beautifully in their outstanding MUST-HAVE 2012 book"

So what numbers will show me I'm in optimal fat burning?

Thank you for your help.

You seem to be confusing blood glucose levels with blood ketone levels.

Since you refer to Phinney & Volek, I assume you intend to measure ketone levels. That's different from our blood glucose levels.

If you are measuring ketones, either P & V or Jimmy Moore should have the optimum numbers for you.

So is a blood glucose meter not going to measure if I'm in ketosis? No wonder I was getting frustrated with my numbers!

Blood glucose is not blood ketones, in fact most meters do no measure blood ketones, you require a specific meter and specific test strips.
I have a freestyle optium and it measures both but you need the ketone strips.
Blood glucose is not an indicator of ketosis, it will not help you at all to see if you have ketones. You can measure your glucose levels to see if you spike post meals which is a good indicator that you are NOT doing it right.

For reference the ideal fasting blood sugar for a healthy person is 3.5-5mmol/L
1-3mmol/L is bad.
For measuring blood ketones the level we accept as normal is 0.6mmol/L and under.

That's very helpful. Thank you so much
