TMI Alert

I've never been regular. Have always had a problem in that area. But now, since low carbing, even things that helped before are no longer doing so.

I have drank organic smooth move tea when in a bind. No pun intended. But even that isn't working. I'm wondering if this sudden three pound weight gain is as a result.

Any suggestions on what to do?

I drink Metamucil ever day and loads of water.

When DD is having potty problems, I make a cup of coffee with a tbsp of coconut oil in it. Solves the problem for her almost immediately.:hyst: But that's because she's not used to using it as often as I do.

Acidophillus helps with me, and eating extra fat helps with me also. magnesium?:dunno:

princessmommy 05-14-2013 09:47 AM

Flax works for me.

Macc0021 05-14-2013 10:50 AM

Coconut oil with my coffee every morning works like magic for me!

When I went on vacation I did not have coconut oil for TEN days... I was so miserable... and I was wearing a bikini every day... it was terrible -- I will NEVER make that mistake again :)

I would stay far away from anything with senna (smooth move tea). It can be extremely habit forming. There were even some people on this board that wrote about their senna tea experience a few years ago and how they became addicted to using it.

I am not sure if I am remembering correcty but didn't you have a cheat recently? That could account for the extra pounds.

Also, have you ever taken magnesium? That works very well and it isn't habit forming and it's an important mineral.

I would also recommend coconut oil in hot coffee. The combo works well. I would also switch from Metamucil to miralax.

I second the suggestion of magnesium. I've read that we don't get enough of it in our diets, anyway. Kill two birds with one stone. :)

Mistizoom 05-14-2013 11:51 AM

I third magnesium.

Cascara Sagrada. About $5 for 100 capsules at Walmart. Find it with the vitamins. It's non habit forming. I use 1 every 2-3 days, or as needed. There were times I was glad I wasn't far from a bathroom. I learned I have about a 20 hr time frame that this stuff works on me so I usually take it before bed. This way I don't have to "go" before I get home from work, and I also don't have to rush home. I know...TMI :D

Yep, me too....I buy milled flax seed and sprinkle on my breakfast and dinner daily. Usually keeps things moving.

I think the research is mixed on this. Some sources do say that it can be habit forming if used over a longer period of time.

Natural Calm Magnesium taken in the evening works wonders for me next morning.

Macc0021 05-14-2013 01:01 PM

I forgot to mention magnesium, as I see many others have. I don't use it all the time, only when needed (once a month or so)

I take it at night and it works by mid-morning. I use this in combo with the CO in my coffee and I rarely have issues.

raytamtay3 05-14-2013 01:09 PM

Thanks everybody. Some good suggestions.

Blue Skies 05-14-2013 01:19 PM

Magnesium. Absolutely. I take a 500mg tablet a night. Works like a charm for regularity and is a good sleep aid, makes you drowsy. Take it before you go to bed. Good for you in other ways too, and most of us are deficient in it if we're not taking the supplement.

20-25g of MCT oil in your coffee will blow out the pipes the for sure.

What's that (MCT)?

Nevermind. I clicked on the link. Thanks.

I know Whole Foods carries it here....

I eat sunflower seeds!! They are low carb, high in fiber and high in magnesium. The sodium can make you retain water though, so drink extra water.

What works great for me is Miralax a few times a week. My gastro doctor told me that senna laxatives cause a condition in your colon called Melanosis, which is a darkening of the surface of your colon wall. It is a benign condition, but it is caused by using senna laxatives.

lilbeetle 05-20-2013 04:03 PM

I never had a problem in that area, but I started taking magnesium because of the recommendation was for more than we get in our diet (everyone, not just low carbers) and lets just say things move pretty fast now :)

I am specifically taking chelated mag. Its the form best absorbed by our bodies, so any mag that ends in 'ate'

Not all forms of magnesium that end in "-ate" are amino acid chelates. Magnesium malate and magnesium citrate are (IMHO) decent forms but are not chelates. Magnesium glycinate and magnesium lysinate are two common amino acid chelate forms.

Anyone know how long it takes the Senna to work. I took it this morning at 10am, feeling crampy but that is it so far.

Leo41 07-22-2013 04:58 PM

Senna does not work for me at all. I hope it works for you, but I'd be careful because my gastroenterologist told me (after I'd tried it) that it is not a good choice.

jeaniem 07-22-2013 05:36 PM

I wonder when it would be safe to take something else?

Sorry I can't answer your question, but I wanted to add that you need to be careful if you use Senna laxatives. Using them too often can cause a condition in your colon called Melanosis. This a benign condition, but it's not nomal either. Melanosis is a darkening in color of the lining of your colon. Doctors used to think it raised your risk of colon cancer, but that has been disproven.

jeaniem 07-23-2013 04:00 PM

It took almost 24 hours to work but it finally did. I am not sure what else to try in the future. I have some leftover ducolax that I used for my colonoscopy prep but fear that it may be too strong.

Ronnie51 07-23-2013 08:41 PM

I recommend Miralax; my doctors say it is safe on a long term basis.

Leo41 07-24-2013 01:45 AM

Yes, Miralax is what my gastro recommends. But you need to take it daily; it doesn't work as most laxatives do. It tries to keep you more 'naturally' regular.
