I never had anything as serious as you or Deb is describing, but I was sick with a cough, congestion and constantly popping/plugged ears for 6 months once. My PCP said " Well, no one can stay sick for that long, so it must be seasonal allergies. Take Benadryl." It didn't occur to her that I had been sick across three seasons.

It cleared up completely when I got my thyroid treated properly.

I also get a head full of mucus if I eat dairy. I recently figured this one out when I had some blood allergy testing done.

You would NOT believe what I do with this stuff!

It's in my coffee in the morning. On my skin at night (I have very dry skin). In my hair with heat before washing. Given to my very allergic bishon. Fry with it. On toast with hot tomatoes - yummm....

I believe the diet helped first, tho. Going sugar free was difficult. I dont miss it (too much ) at all.

I used to have chronic sinus problems.

I got off the Afrin by putting a little Ocean (saline) in the Afrin bottle everyday until the Afrin was gone. I was addicted to the Afrin.

I now use xylitol nasal spray if I need anything. I heard about it on the Chris Kresser show and buy it on Amazon. You can read the reviews there. Dentists recommend xylitol chewing gum because of its antibiotic properties cuts dental decay.

I have read xyitol is an antifungal too. It might help.

I buy XClear on prime/super saver.

Thought I'd weigh in here. I used to suffer from constant sinus infections from the time I was about 13. I went to Argentina for a month the summer before grade 12 and picked up a nasty bug there. I had a sinus infection from about the 2nd week of the trip. It never went away, and by January, I was laid up in the hospital with such a severe sphenoid sinus infection that it was causing swelling in my brain. I spent a week in the hospital getting IV antibiotics but missed almost a month of senior year due to it.

I would get the occasional one after, but cutting out sugar, dairy and wheat has yielded a grand total of ZERO sinus infections since.

For an OTC fix before you actually get an infection or in the early stages, mucinex has worked wonders for me in combination with staying super hydrated and using a nasal rinse with anti-inflammatory properties. I use the strongest version that only as guiafenesin (sp?) as an ingredient -- that's the stuff that thins mucus (sp?).

Probiotics!

My son gets chronic sinus infections, and his ENT showed me a new study at his last visit which suggested that repopulating the sinuses with good bacteria helps keep the infection from recurring in the future.

The ENT said to eat the yogurt, not snort it: ) Yes, I asked.
