bmi is the better indicator...

of risk for heart disease than cholesterol.
Interesting article on medpage.com. It gave the results of a ten year study
that showed bmi is a more accurate predictor of future heart disease than blood lipid levels. Mind you, it didn't conclude that lipid profiles weren't predictive, but that bmi was better.
This is just another finding that is leading me to believe that taking powerful cholesterol drugs is really something that should be questioned.
I have been taking lipitor and tricor for 13 years. I'm beginning to re think my numbers.

blood sugar levels over time, as shown with A1c tests, are also strongly correlated with heart problems. from 4.8 up there is a linear relationship, so keeping it as low as possible is best. "Normal" is considered anything 6 or less, and for diabetics anything 7 or less. These are not very helpful if your desire is to minimize heart problems!

I got my lipid profile back and all my numbers improved. Total cholesterol, ldl, and triglycerides all down, HDL went up.
These results after 3 full months of high fat/low carb....so much for the conventional diet wisdom.
