Vitamin B12 Deficiency

I was diagnosed yesterday with a B12 Deficiency and the Doctor has ordered taking B12 shots once a week in her office until they can get my level up to a sustainable level. Once it is sustainable it will move to a once a month injection. Has anyone else had the injections and do you feel that it hurt your weightloss at all?

Glimmer girl -how did you find out you had this deficiency? Were you feeling any symptoms?

My primary care ordered the test because of the overwhelming fatigue I was feeling and I was having numbness (prickly feelings) in my hands in feet. I also have MS and it is very common to not have enough B12 so I was checked mainly out of routine because of that as well. They are hoping that the shots will help me with the fatigue and that some of the numbness will go away with it and that it might not just be the MS causing all the issues. I guess we will see! I start the shots tomorrow.

Just curious, ever try 5 hour energy? It has an insane amount of B12 8,333% DV!!

I was taking a b12 everyday,along with a b complex.I started getting hungry,I mean really hungry.It was like I could not get enough to eat.So, I ate,all low carb but, I did eat when i was hungry.I started gaining.Then I read on this site about B12 making you hungry.I quit taking it.My hunger was gone in two days.I am now back to normal weight loss.This is just my story. In no way am I saying this will happen to you.I might have even been giving myself an over dose of it.JMO. HTH.

Wonder what they call a blood test for B12. My doc is old school and does not seem to think testing for "vitamins" is necessary.....

I've been taking a supplement of 5000 IU of B12 every day for 6-7 months. I'm still losing weight. It's slower now because I'm near my goal, but I don't think the oral supplement has affected my weight loss.

My Dr tested me for B12 and I was tanked out! I now have normal levels, and while I don't see it helping or hindering my weightloss, my mood had been changed drastically!!!! I am no longer moody, and I feel much better.. I had only 1 shot in his office, the rest of the time I took a lozenge that I took sublingually. My level went from under 200 to over 900 in a matter of 3 months.

My doctor recommended 2500 mcg/day of B-12 for me, and specified the sublingual microlozenges. He said it was a metabolic booster and a vitamin frequently diminished in the body by depression and anxiety. It's hard to say what its specific impact on my weight loss was, but my energy level was higher and more consistent, and I certainly can't believe it slowed me down.

It happened to me too a few years ago! I had to go weekly because I was soooo low. I was tired all the time, Even passed out a few times. It was scary before I was diagnosed...Within a couple of hours after the shots I felt more energized, almost got a warm feeling...like a flush!

I have been draggy lately, I think I will have my levels checked.

It didn't seem to affect my weight to be really low or to get the shots.

Thanks everyone for your responses. To answer the question above about 5 hour energy, I have not tried it. I was just diagnosed on Tuesday with the issue and the they told me at the time I was too low for any kind of oral form to be helpful that I had to do injections and I needed to start them immediately.

I went today and received my first shot and it might just be in my mind but I already am feeling better. I am usually ready for a nap about this time of day and right now I am feeling fine. Hopefully, it keeps working!

Glimmergirl, hope you don't mind if I ask a question here also, related to B vitamins in general. I think we've all had the experience of bright yellow urine when taking B vitamins and I admit I am not religious about taking my vitamins every day. I've noticed lately that occasionally I don't see the "yellow effect" when I do consume my B supplements, so does this mean my body needs more B's and is absorbing more and not excreting it? Thought this might be a good place to ask. Maybe I am deficient too? TIA

A very interesting topic and one that should be discussed more often in my opinion. There was a great discussion on this topic on a Jimmy Moore podcast with nurse, Sally Pacholok. She claims that it is misdiagnosed as a variety of other issues but are really symptoms of b12 deficiency. Very compelling information.

No OTC form of B12 is helpful if there's a deficiency.

I am hypothyroid, and when my T3 hormones are low, I experience incredible fatigue. When I recently reported symtoms of low T3 to my endo, he endo tested my B12 level to see whether that was causing my fatigue.

It turned out that my B12 is way HIGH, and then I was concerned because my multi-vitamin contains a very high amount of B12--about 800% of the daily recommended dosage, so I asked my doctor about that.

He said that it didn't matter about the multi-vitamin because B12 is water soluble (or something like that), and the body flushes out any that it doesn't need. He explained that's why a B12 deficiency has to be treated with Rx rather than any OTC.

The bold part is what I don't get...If your body needs the B vitamin and you take a mega dose...I take liquid...Wouldn't your body get what it needs, taking care of the deficiency. And if the deficiency was greater than the amount taken, then there would be no need for your body to excrete it...it would just use it.

Is it because your body can't make use of the B when taken orally? I don't know, but why does it have to be by injection and wouldn't one have to continue getting injections for life if they have a deficiency?

Some people have absorption problems with B12 and the only effective way to get it is injections. Everyone I know who gets them reports feeling more energetic.

So if you if you don't have the absorption problem...(this cleared up my question from above a bit) then you should be able to get what you are lacking through a supplement and excrete what is not needed...I guess the question is to find if you have an absorption problem...thanks.

My experience with b12 deficiency...

It takes approximately 10 years for the liver to deplete its stores of b12. So its possible to not be getting enough and not know it until years later.

In 2010, my DH, who was 20 years post colon resection due to Crohns disease, started having numbness and tingling in his toes. Within four days it progressed upward into his face. ER thought stroke because it was only on the right side. All tests came back normal. The only abnormality was his b12. He progressed to arm, leg and torso tremors and severe gait problems. Sometimes he'd get "stuck" in a tremor and couldn't move. His body was mimicing MS. All those tests came back normal. After 11months and once his b12 was stabilized, he started getting better. He is back to work but with other issues. We keep a very close eye on his levels and motor functions. His original numbers were barely 100, now he is almost 300.

It's is a water soluble vitimin, meaning we will eliminat what we dont need, but its not really a true representation of what our liver still has. If you have ever had low b12, my suggestion is to keep taking the supplements life-long.

Added comments for thought: My Mom's Geriatric specialist (she has dementia) says the latest research indicates most people with dementia and Alzheimer's show deficiencies in B12, B6 and Folate(folic acid). My Mom's levels for all 3 were nearly zip, nada because she won't eat right, despite coaxing from me, my brother nor the CNA we hired for her 3 hours 5-days a week. But both her docs said B vitamins aren't absorbed well when taken in oral capsules and is best given by shot. Neither have mentioned sublengual, so that may be something really new.

Thanks for posting this tread. I find the information interesting. Like a poster above, I've been taking a b vitamin supplement on and off for a couple years now, mostly in tax season, but now every day, and the last few days I noticed that my urine isn't the neon yellow it used to be. :P Not sure what that means, but I'm definitely following this discussion!

imo sublengual are the next best thing of you can't afford shots. The ones they sell at walmart have sugar, B Dots don't. People sometimes don't take them right though. Rinse mouth with water and 30 minutes after your last drink put under tongue and hold. Don't eat or drink for 30 minutes after.

Hmmm. I hadn't read that part about rinsing before and waiting 30 minutes after, and my doctor hasn't said that. I'm not disputing you, but can you give me a source for your information?

If you do a search on ''how to administer sublingual medication'' you'll find info on it I've been taking it and liquid coQ10 for some time now and can't remember the exact site I got the info off of when I researched the best way to take. I do remember reading a lot on the benefits of you mouth being rinsed first and not drinking, eating or smoking after. HTH

just re-read my post, sorry I should have said rinse with water before taking.. not 30 minutes before taking. But I have read it should be 30 minutes since you last drank or ate.

Hiya! I know for a fact it only took me 5 yrs for my b12 levels to become depleted following gastric bypass surgery. I was treated for 2 years and given a clean bill of fantastic b12 levels then this summer I had a full Iron panel run... And my b12 was low (65) again!! I go once per month and have an injection and feel as though I will have to for the rest of my life.

Here is a bit of info on the importance of b12.....

Apparently it is frequently misdiagnosed and is important that when problems arise, that b12 levels be checked before accepting a diagnosis.

That may be true in your case, but I raised my level from <200 to >1000 in a matter of months using only OTC sublinguals.

I'm in the process of getting B12 shots once a week. After two weeks of the shots my levels raised from 312 to over 500. Switching now to once a month and hopefully the levels will remain that high or higher.

Some of us just don't absorb B-12 properly from our food. I have mine tested every 6 months when I do my Thyroid blood work. I haven't noticed it having any impact on my weight one way or another.

I did bi-weekly shots for several years. The nurse showed my husband how to give me a shot in my arm muscle. The cost was about $7 per month. You can get a prescription for a small bottle and the needles are cheap.

I switched to sub-lingal a few years ago and have done fine with it. I thought that since I was pretty high quality protein/low carb that I could quit them. I just had blood work and it is low again. So..back to the sublingal.

I use Natural Factor brand because it does not contain any sweeteners.

Is it better to do the sublingual or the liquid with food...I was told liquid was best for otc but I think these are 2 very different ways to absorb.
