The best thing is that she might have been treated early which will help with the recovery time. They hurt!

Had them last year (with pneumonia at the same time). Have to say the pain was horrible. I took pretty heavy doses of prescription pain medication for quite a while. I had been kicking myself for not getting the vacinnation (you can get it after age 60). Then last week my SIL came down with shingles and she had the vacinnation. So guess it doesn't always work.

I had shingles April '09, not fun. Valtrex was a must, along with ice packs, a spray that numbed the area recommended by the pharmacy and vitamin E . The vitamins I read about in The Practical Encyclopedia of Natural Healing. They recommend between 1200-1600 I.U. of E daily, along with E oil or vitamin E cream applied directly to the lesions. The vitamin E can help with postherpetic neuralgia and will lessen possible scarring. Acupunture can help with pain.

I have permanent nerve damage in my back because I suffered thru shingles and never got the proper treatment. I was too scared and stupid to go to the doctor; was afraid it was skin cancer or something. The one spot never did go away and when they flared up again I had to go to the doctor. I've had all kinds of treatment to try and get rid of the back pain including some sort of shock therapy. Now I'm stuck taking about three different meds to try and control the pain.
