Gout Spurred by B-12/B/C Complex Supplements?
I'm a diabetic gout sufferer who recently embarked on a low-carb diet to control my BG. So far so good. I have been able to normalize my BG successfully (100 premeal so far) eating about 100g of carbs. My plan is to control my BG even tigher by consuming about 70g of carbs in a few weeks.
Enter gout. Of course I knew that gout is associated with purine-rich meats and veggies such as sardines, pork chops, red meat, cauliflower, asparagus, spinach. Recently, however, fructose has been connected with gout as well, and the link with purine-rich items has become somewhat tenuous. But this was my fear. How would I be able to implement this low-carb diet (which I really need to be on to control my BG) when I have gout looming on the horizon? Well, for the first 3 weeks, I escaped scot free. No gout. But then, starting late last week, I had 3 attacks in 5 days. Thankfully, I have a mild form of gout which responds immediately to a very small dose (185mg) of NSAID (naproxen). But this is still disurbing. Now, at about the same time, I also started having B12 (2k mcg), B complex (which also contains C), and D (D3, 10k iu) supplements, since the widely-prescribed diabetes drug (Metformin) is known to lower such levels. Has anyone experienced gout attacks upon starting B12 or B complex (containing B6 and B3) supplements? My web research found one instance where an injected form of B12 did so. But there is no wide mention of B12 (or B supplements) increasing the blood uric acid level. For chronic gout sufferers, are vitamin supplements recommended? My hope is that my multiple gout attacks are entirely due to these supplements and NOT due to my protein-rich diet. This will allow me to discontinue the supplements and continue with my low-carb diet. Last edited by maxell; 11-11-2009 at 06:51 PM.. |

I am interested too.
I don't know very much, I struggle with gout too. Black cherry tabs and vitamin c has helped me with outbreaks. If I have a bad outbreak I take a teaspoon of black cherry concentrate, the carbs are high but it helps me alot when needed. Borage oil is said to help I have had minamal outbreaks while taking it. I have noticed with me when I am in a dropping weight cycle the gout gets worse like the fat cells are flushing the uric acid out. My outbreaks have lessened the more weight I drop too. Sis
