dh dentist appt. prescription CHLORHEXIDINE GLUCONATE RINSE

Is this oral rinse safe?

My dh had perfect oral health until he joined the Marine Corps. Then I thank they used him as training for the military dentistry. He went to the dentist today and they said that he has gum disease. They gave him a prescription mouth wash: Chlorhexidine Gluconate 0.12% oral rinse.

Has anyone used this and is it safe?

I have been looking at oil pulling, thinking this may help. I don't like the thought of using the chemicals in the mouth wash given by the dentist.

Any input would help.

I don't know about people, but it's used in veterinary dentistry if that tells you anything, haha. Chlorhexidine is used in surgery and as an anti-septic. I'm not sure of it's use in people.

It's safe. I've used it before after an oral surgery. It's an antibacterial rinse. I'm a pharmacist a I rarely use medications. This one is fine.

I've used this in the past as well.

Though, I now use coconut oil instead. Anti-microbial anti-viral. Check out some of the oil pulling threads.

Thanks Fawn -

Now if I could just confince my dh the wonders of oil pulling. I am sure it would be alot cheaper than the $540 dentist bill & the $35 for the rinse.

You might want to start him on some B complex. Both my Dad and I had problems with gum disease, but mine is fine if I take my CoQ10, and b-complex. B-6 in particular is linked to gum disease.

I wouldn't use it. It can stain teeth, alter taste perception, and lead to more build up of plaque and cavities. Horrible stuff.

I would work on getting a better toothbrush(something electric)/improving dental habits (make sure he isn't brushing too hard) and decreasing sugar intake before going anywhere near that stuff.
