I took the Abilify-it's only 2 mg so I figure it won't hurt. The only thing I noticed is that my vision is blurry and I am drowsy. Maybe I need to take it at night? My mood is halfway decent although I am pretty snapish. I have no idea how long it takes for this stuff to kick in.

I think I am going to schedule an appointment with my regular doc and talk to him about this whole thing and see what he says. I'm sure he will RX the Abilify until I get in to anoth pdoc. I am going to ask him if there is a pdoc he recommends professionally, not someone his staff picked out of the yellow pages.

from Crazy meds:
Quote:
Abilify (aripiprazole). Currently the newest of all the atypicals. Abilify has moderate-to-high affinity for a variety of dopamine, as well as serotonin and histamine receptors, thus is well known to be activating, rather than sedating, especially with the bipolar. However that hasn't stopped Bristol-Myers-Squibb from submitting Abilify to the FDA as a treatment for mania. You'd be better off trying this med in the morning instead of at bedtime like all the other antipsychotics. Best evaluated on a day off, just in case it turns out to be sedating after all, because it does hit serotonin and histamine receptors. In addition to the usual side effects for antipsychotics, Abilify is known for eye twitches and this weird acidic burp that usually goes away.

It hasn't been on the market long enough for the real freaky side effects to make themselves known, but we were intrigued by reports of intestinal perforation and priapism (the erection that never quits, so who needs Viagra?).

Abilify's initial dose is 10-15 mg, taken once a day and you should wait at least two weeks before increasing the dose. Abilify has a maximum dosage of 30 mg a day.

Abilify has a half-life of 75 hours.

Bristol-Myers-Squibb.
But they say that Lamictal is sometimes sedating but it is SO not like that for me.

When I started meds the side effects 'stoned' zombie blurry thing took a week or 2 to settle in.

Important information about Abilify

Abilify is not for use in psychotic conditions that are related to dementia. Abilify may cause heart failure, sudden death, or pneumonia in older adults with dementia-related conditions. Stop using Abilify and call your doctor at once if you have the following symptoms: fever with stiff muscles and rapid heart rate; uncontrolled muscle movements; symptoms that come on suddenly such as numbness or weakness, severe headache, and problems with vision, speech, or balance. Abilify can cause side effects that may impair your thinking or reactions. Be careful if you drive or do anything that requires you to be awake and alert. Avoid drinking alcohol, which can increase some of the side effects of Abilify.

Before you take aripiprazole, tell your doctor if you regularly use other medicines that make you sleepy (such as cold or allergy medicine, narcotic pain medicine, sleeping pills, muscle relaxers, and medicine for seizures, depression, or anxiety). They can add to sleepiness caused by Abilify.

Avoid becoming overheated or dehydrated. Drink plenty of fluids, especially in hot weather and during exercise. It is easier to become dangerously overheated and dehydrated while you are taking Abilify.

Lamictal is sooo not sedating for me either.

Faithgirl I hope Abilify helps you. I've read about people at CrazyBoards who've had great luck with it.

Also, my internist is very knowledgable about these things even though she's not a pdoc, and she told me there's a new drug that's like a combo chemically of Zyprexa and Prozac, but I can't remember the name. She was gonna give me samples of it but I wanted to try Lamictal again. I was worried about taking Zyprexa because of the weight gain issues, but something about the chemistry of Prozac makes me unhungry, so I was willing to give it a shot.

There's a lot of drugs out there, and there's a lot of great coctails.

Prozac always took my appetite out back and shot it in the head.

Great when I was a teenage girl.

It didn't do jack for my depressions, though. Not so great.

Oh, great, my risperdal-makes-my-boobs-huge thread hit the airwaves? ACK.

The ones I read were all negative, but then I didn't go past the first page, or do a search, so they may have been further down.

Well, the water retention OUCH factor kind of takes the fun out of the equation... hey look at that BUT DON'T TOUCH! Poor Ron. One week a month, no boobs.

The Lexapro really does a fantastic job of killing my sex drive, too. I can tell it's the Lexapro because I occasionally wake up with a migraine.

If I take my pills, I'll vomit. Occasionally I'm needed at work, like that... so I stagger in, no meds on board. I go home and crash.

The next day or two, when I'm feeling better, I'm really frisky, until I take another Lexapro.

But with sucidal depressions where I was barely able to resist... had to lock up all the knives and pills....I don't get sloppy with the Lexapro dosing.

I got tired of seeing things and being slightly paranoid, went up on the Risperdal.. total zombie today.

My mom has been in the hospital with pneumonia. They sent her back to the nursing home to die late last night. My sister and dad spent most the night with her and my brothers and I went this morning. My sister and I will take my dad back over in a bit. I wish she wasn't an hour away. She was in pain this morning. The doc had ordered morphine, but the nursing home had none so they were waiting on the pharmacy to bring it. Damn, I would have gone and gotten it myself if they had let me. Instead they gave her a double dose of vicoden and Ativan and it did help and she went to sleep.

Ordinarily, I am a basket case with things involving my mom. She has been sick for so long. I usually completely fall apart and cry and cry. And I did do a lot of that last night. But I was pretty calm this moring and even now. I kind of chalk that up to the Abilify and I don't know if it's a good thing or not? I am still pretty short tempered with it though. Prayers would be appreciated.

For me, at least, I know I'm stable when I'm able to feel a range of emotions, but don't feel like EVERYTHING is a catharsis. Even in stressful/bad situations the most markable change in me is a true sense of perspective. It is what it is, and it might be awful, but it isn't the soul-crushing sense of hopelessness that I generally have looming over me for no reason.

It's early so you might be feeling a little numb, too, though.

I'm a lot more even in a crisis now. Husband got really sick, Dad in ICU, baby-kitten died (I loved that cat like my own child), and I hurt, but I was LEVEL.

I'm sorry you're suffering. My mother's death was very quick and unexpected (heart attack, she was in her 50's and very thin). Be very kind to yourself.

Thanks Molly. We're going over in shifts. They increased the morphine to every 2 hours. There's no reason for her to suffer any more than she already has. I just miss her and the person she was.

I tried getting in earlier with the original psychiatrist-no go. I did get an appointment with another one in that group though for 8-7. I will keep the original one though just in case. Seems like a crap shoot in finding a good one anyway...

Still praying for you and your family, and Yep, finding any doc is often a crapshoot, often Pdoc because referrals (from friends) are harder to get. Not everyone wants to say "Hey, I have a GREAT shrink...." so word of mouth spreads more slowly

I always hate it when Ron's in ICU, especially when he's in pain.

I have BEEN THERE. The worst part is when they told me "He's maxed out on pain meds, we can't give him more" and I had to stand there holding the unresponsive hand and listen to the terrible groaning. [shudder]

I know, it is so awful when you can't do anything for someone you love. They have increased the morphine, but she is still in pain. Listening to her breathing is the worst. My grandfather died of pneumonia this past January and now my mom. It's a horrible way to go.

I remember when you were posting about Ron having that bad reaction to the antibiotic. I am so glad he recovered from that.

Yeah, he will always have the neuropathy (nerve damage) but at least he can pretty much enjoy his food. His medication really helps with the pain (Neurontin).

Everything that has happened to both of us, really makes me want to stay the hell away from anything with an MD.

Except my P-doc. He's cool.

I'll be praying for all of you, Faith.

Yay DJ!

A DO gave Ron the antibiotic from hell, Molly. We found another, MD, doctor we intend to see if/when we need it. He deals with cash only uninsured so he is more understanding of our position... we haven't seen him yet but Ron has the address memorized.

I'm just avoiding "regular" docs completely for a bit. ACK.

I used to be obessed with the idea something was killing me and I had to figure it out... now, thank God, I don't.

Something was killing me and a nice mental health tech figured it out. I love that man, wherever he is.

Mom is gone. I thought we had at least a couple more days. I miss her. I miss the woman she was before this horrible disease stole her from me. But I know where she has gone and I know she is okay. God is also looking out for me. Before I got the call that mom had passed away, I got a call from the scheduler for the original pdoc that my regular doc had wanted me to see in the first place-the one I couldn't get in to see until September. He had an appointment open up for tomorrow morning. God knew I was going to need it. I really hope he is awesome.
