diabetes question
Hubby just got his results back and his fasting bs was above the normal range at 136, he had a A1C test and it said his avaerage is 126,, now due to the blood sugar evaluation he had a urinary test to screen for early diabetic related kidney damage, and his test showed that his kidneys are beginning to leak protein into the urine.. For this reason he recommend that he start a certain type of blood pressure med that is indicated for a diabetic. He said use of such a med can provide protection to his kidneys. I know nothing about this, and why would a blood pressure med be used, does anyone know about this using the bp meds for the kidneys
thanks so much |

It controls the pressure in the blood vessels in the kidneys. They need a perfect blood supply in order to work correctly. The same goes for the eyes. Make sure he sees an ophthomologist (not optometrist) for a new diabetic check up.
I'm a nurse at a clinic in the SW suburbs of Chicago. We see a lot of this. It will seem like a lot of doctor visits at first, but it will be worth it to get 'everything' under control. It will balance out soon. Mary |

MAJOR LCF POSTER!

My sister is a type2 diabetic, and she's on a BP med to protect her kidneys, and she tells me that it's fairly standard because the kidneys are so vulnerable. She experiences NO side effects from the meds, so I think your husband will be fine.

Sunny-
All I know is that my sister did NOT have high BP when she started taking the medication, and her BP has remained steady. She's checked regularly because of her diabetes, and no BP issues have surfaced. In addition, she's never had any of the symptoms of low BP. However, I sometimes have low BP (no medication) in the early morning, and it's apparent when it happens, so if your husband experiences anything like that, he'd know it before it became serious. |

Hi, I would just like to add that proper treatment now can save your DH from having to go on onto Dialysis in the future. That is a treatment that is shocking to the body and is life-changing for the whole family, in a bad way. Many cannot work after starting it, nor enjoy life. It is to be avoided at all costs! (family member is on Dialysis.)
