Can Probiotics Cause Constipation at first?

Have any of you with a tendency toward constipation had the experience of beginning probiotics and them actually causing constipation?

If so, does it go away as one adjusts or does it mean that probiotics aren't for you? Is there a specific brand of probiotic that you would recommend (I have tried Pearls, Phillips Colon Health and culturelle and have had the same experience with all three).

My latest is the Phillips colon health and I have actually gained 5 lbs after taking it for three days and it is obvious it is from being constipated. If it will go away, I will stick it out. I would so appreciate any thoughts you are willing to share. Fawn, I understand from others on the board that you have a great deal of expertise, so I would really welcome you also chiming in. Thanks so much to everyone that responds! ( I posted this in the low carb lobby and believe that I should have actually posted it here.. please accept my apology for double post)

Benefits of probiotics... from my perspective

I personally try to get my probiotics from natural sources, such as yogurt. I've read that leafy greens can provide probitotic benefits, as well as many other nutritional benefits, so I eat alot of salads.

I've also taken a couple of different probiotic supplements, but they've never made me feel constipated. Usually, they help me from becoming constipated and overall, just keep me feeling regulated.

I don't want to speculate, but perhaps you should try a different supplement, or try eating more yogurts. I like to add a cup of yogurt into my fruit smoothies. That way I can just drink it down, along with fresh fruit. It's a great addition to any smoothie. Here's a good article about the benefits of probiotics. Perhaps you can find your answer in there.
