ladies only....bladder incontinence question...

Ok, my doctor told me to do kegels because after I wipe, I stand up and it still dribbles no matter how much I wipe. I have been doing these forever, and no improvement.

Has anyone here had experience with this? How long do I have to do this before it works?

In looking at your age, declining estrogen can easily be the culprit. I'm not sue of the pathology but when I started on estrogen replacement, mine went away. There are also minor surgical procedures where they inject collagen around the urinary sphincter, I believe, and that helps. Yours is a very common problem. Have you seen your a GYN or urologist? You said a "doctor" but I wasn't sure if they were a specialist.

Ohhhh yeah - after the emergency C-Section I had, they knicked a nerve that took a long time to heal up - it was the funkiest thing. Doing those exercises helped my situation greatly - in my mid thirties, they still recommended it because its good to have strong muscle tone in that region - but.. there are THOSE days where I cant run to the bathroom fast enough - and as soon as I sit on the porcelin throne - all is so much better and I dont care about doing the Kegels.. Im just thankful that from doing them, its made my bladder that much stronger for times when I cant get to the bathroom until I get home.

There is no text-book theory that says its done in any sort of time - you have to have patience. But, if you feel you have been doing this for a considerable amount of time, you should seek the advise of your physician/specialist - only they can help you because they are overseeing your care

No, haven't had experience, but I've heard if you do pelvic floor exercises - like stopping urine mid flow etc, that helps

Just my regular doctor told me to do them. I sneezed today and....*sigh*

I've been doing them for quite a while. Looks like I might have to see someone about this.

Be careful. If your pelvic muscles are already shortened you can be do more harm then good. I would get a script to see a PT and get evaluated properly. They can take care of this in physcial therapy, but you have to be very careful in choosing the right PT. TI should be someone who strictly deals with womens health issues. I don't know if you now my story or not, but I have a huge amount of knowledge in pelvic region from a chronic pain syndrime I have. Kegals made me much worse.

I agree with PP. I am seeing a PT right now for stress/urge incontinence, and she mentioned that if you do kegal exercises incorrectly, it is worse than not doing them at all. She also told me to lean forward when you are done urinating, to try to squeeze out the extra urine, before you try to stand up, so that you don't leak. It seems to work well for me.

My favorite thing about the PT though was the biofeedback. They have a computer program that they hook to a device about the size of a tampon and insert into your vagina. It measures the strength of your Kegal squeezes, how relaxed you are in between contractions, and helps track your endurance (how long you can hold your squeeze). It also "tells" on you if you are cheating and using abdominal muscles instead of pelvic floor muscles. I really liked seeing the feedback, but now that I'm pregnant, they won't do this with me anymore.

Other tips that she shared with me are to avoid caffeine, drink lots of water, and avoid acidic things like lemon and tomato because they can be irritating to the bladder. I was willing to try anything, and the improvement in just a few weeks was marked. I just asked my GYN to write me a script for women's health PT and that was all that was necessary to get the appointment.

I have the same problem with sneezing, laughing, sometimes just walking. My doctor sent me to have a test done, very embarrassing, but I found out I am in need for a
minor surgery called a TVT Sling. You can google it for more information. My aunt recently had the procesure done and she says she has been given a new life. So I am
planning to have it done this winter. My problem is from having such big babies, both were over 9 lbs and vaginal delivered, so the excersizes and drugs will not repair the problem. Maybe you can check into this.

Hi Kristina...
I looked at your profile to get your age. Have your GP refer you to an urologist. The urologist will run a number of tests. They will try to determine if you have a weak pelvic floor, in which case kegels may or not help. They may find out you need to have a sling for your bladder and/or your urethra as over the years both may "drop". A good urologist will use the biofeedback as well as a number of other tests. The sling should stop all the sneezing, coughing, laughing etc.

One thing you can try before you go the urologist with the dribbling. When you go to the bathroom, lean forward. This will help drain any urine that may have collected in a "well". When you use the tissue, go in a little to blot up any excess. The dribbling problem may also go away as you become smaller.
Hope this helps.

I have issues like this too. I always wear a panty liner "just in case" because I tend to lose urine if I sneeze, or yell, or exercise and even dance (sigh). Not always but it has happened. I do Kajels too and now started pilates since building your core helps I was told but I have had this problems since I was in my 20s. Not ready to go on any medications.

Wow. I didn't know you could damage something doing kegels wrong

I think I have found the right way to do them though..I think. Interesting idea to go to the PT for something like that. I haven't tried the leaning forward thing either. Good ideas, thank you..and the sling I hadn't heard of.

Kristina - you're not alone. *sigh* Hits me when i least expect it.

While I was in PT for my neck injury - They had several posters urging patients to ask for PT in reference to incontinence - and I admit, I was a little surprised too. But thinking about it, it does make sense.

I happened to overhear a PT and a patient... she shouldn't have been so loud.. but the girl was only about 16. Discussing doing Kegels and incontinence.
