I read a lot about the crystals in the ear and it makes total sense, but why would they go out of place just on PMS?!
Why not any other time of the month?!

This has baffled me. Do you think hormones knock the crystals out of place?

Oh why did I have to be a woman ;-)
You know what I have anxiety disorder and it really did help to take xanax. Maybe give it a try? Like I said I have my IUD so that might be apart of my problem too so it might be hormonal. But it wouldn't hurt to try the anxiety meds maybe?

thanks for the suggestion.
My vertigo is not caused from anxiety.
I hear ya though on the anxiety disorder. I've had panic/anxiety since I was 19 yrs old, but I'm just not a person who takes medication.

I think it's scary when I DR gives out xanax or any highly addictive medication without even knowing the cause of a persons ailment.

Of course xanax can help with the anxiety that comes along with vertigo, but nothing takes the spins away. I wish there was

thanks and hugs to you also :-)

I don't know, maybe the water retention has something to do with it? Or it could be the level of hormones, if it's spiking or whatever. My hormones are a mess and I have no answers.

I know when I was having dizzy spells turned out to be anemia. Once I started iron supplements and adding spinach ect. to my diet the vertigo stopped completely. The dr. was trying to prescribe depression(also a symptom of anemia) and other meds before my blood test even came back. My anemia was caused by heavy periods.

Thanks Mae, I get my blood tested all the time due to my lupus and I'm not anemic, though I used to be but never had the vertigo when I was.

Dr's and their WONDERFUL overprescribing of medications! ugh!

Are you ok now?

I ended up doing my own research ...surprise, surprise, and found that Magnesium supplements helped my migraine/vertigo a lot. Just another suggestion to help you in your research.

Any information you can look into with hormone related dizziness or hormone fluctuation vertigo would be a good start.

Mary
I think you were right here.

I've done so much research on this and every time came up with migraines. I've gotten a few bad ones this last month as well.

I found a lot of info, but here is one good site.

Migraine-Associated Vertigo: eMedicine Otolaryngology and Facial Plastic Surgery

I've always suffered from motion sickness and also have horrible photophobia
My world is much calmer on the cloudy days.

This really puts the piece of this puzzle to rest.
Now I wonder if I should see a migraine doc.

In my case, it's related to hormones for sure. Maybe once I start my progesterone, they will disappear.

I wish I could figure out what is causing my vertigo. It started over a week ago & is mostly when I sit up or lie down in bed. The rest of the time I feel fatigued & slightly "off." Just not feeling right. I'm post menopausal.

Sorry to hear that. Vertigo is seriously one of the worst conditions. I would rather lose an arm.

Is your vertigo constant or only when you sit up/lie down?
How old are you? Do you have any sinus problems? Any seaonsal allergies?

Me too!!

{Now I wonder if I should see a migraine doc. }

You're stuck between a rock and a hard place, my friend. The migraine is the SYMPTOM, not the cause of the vertigo. I'm a nurse, and I used to work for a neurologist. Something as simple as a beta blocker medication, taken daily, can help the migraines. I can't remember if you said that you tried the anti migraine meds. There are a number of them.

Make sure you tell your doc that you have pinpointed the cause- the fluctuations of your hormones. The Pill, taken continuously w/o the 1 week cycle off, is a way to control fluctuating hormones, but, some gynes won't put women on hormones if they know you have migraines.

Sometimes diuretics help, if taken during the last part of your cycle.

I hope you find some relief soon.

Deb,

You need to have a doctor (or specially trained physical therapist) do a canalith repositioning procedure on you. It can be done quickly, in the office. Look up 'benign positional vertigo' and you will see if your symptoms are the same.

I hope you feel better soon.

Deb

Hey Deb, I hope you will check into this what Mary described. I have chronic inner ear problems and vertigo for years. Mine has turned out to be complicated probably autoimmune different reasons. But was also BPPV. This is the main reason I am 50 pounds overwieght now is lack of getting out about or working and not being able to exercise very easily. BPPV is easily treated if that is what you have. My ear doctor does the treatment Florida but it is well known and treatable by any good Otolarygologist, Otologist. Nuerologist do the treatment to. From what I have been told migraine can be a factor in this.

Hi Mary, thanks for the input.
I've never taken BC pill and am close to 43 now so don't think I would start.
I've also seen a hormone specialist and am going to be starting bio identical progersterone.

I heard diuretics is a great help for vertigo when it's related to Menieres?!
Do you think it also helps with the migrains?

It could help if your migraines are hormanally related and you are getting them because of excess fluid retention (bloating).

I'll ask about this. I'm hoping to get to see a great migraine doc in my city, who I hear is pretty open to alternative treatments.

Thanks for the info :-)

I am 49 years old now and I have had dizziness just the same as you describe ever since I was in my twenties, anywhere from a whole week to one or two days just before my period. Some times I dont get it at all and I have noticed that I get it worse when my eating is not as healthy or when I am not getting as much excersize as usual. I am also allergic to dairy (but I consume it anyways) I have noticed that the dizziness can get worse when I have been a bad girl and had too much dairy during that time.

Birth control pills?

Hi everyone,

I also have vertigo and it occurs most often right before or during the first few days of my period. I have had countless tests for vertigo which don't really show anything. I am also on a low sodium, low sugar, no caffeine, no alcohol, and no chocolate diet for the vertigo.

I think I may also have a situation where the vertigo is related to my hormones since it most often occurs around my period. My gyno suggested birth control pills as a solution.

Has anyone tried birth control pills to try to help the vertigo, and if so, did it work?

Thanks!
