Cortef (hydrocortisone) Question

Does anyone here take Cortef for adrenal support? I take 5 mg daily at about 4 pm per doctor's advice.

I know high doses of steroids are famous for making you gain weight, but what about small doses like this? Any thoughts?

That is a very low dose, I think you will be okay. I take 3 mg. of Medrol which is equal to 15mg. of cortef and I'm just starting to lose very slowly. When my dose was higher (6mg.) I started gaining and the weight didn't budge at all until I got down to 3mg. I take it for adrenal support as well.

Hi. I am also supporting my adrenals by an amazing doctor who developed a way to delivery hormones and nutrients transdermally. It includes pregnenolone and amino acids like Glutamine (not MSG). I have just started his program and its helping me tons. I thought I would never heal but his laboratory tests check for all aspects of your hormones throughout the day and then gives you custom cremes that absorb into your blood stream slowly.. Quite awesome. I was on steroids and antidepressants before and they were not beneficial for my adrenals. Remember that your doctor can only help you as much as he was taught in medical school. Some doctors need to update themselves on the best ways for their patients to heal. I know for me that I was so burnt out I that my whole body was not happy and my immune system was going crazy. Contact me if you have any questions.. Good luck on your healing journey.

Steve

Thanks for the replies. TinaBina, that sort of confirms my concerns. I am also post-Kimkins starvation diet, so I'm fighting a double battle with losing. I haven't lost any weight in darn near a year despite constantly low carbing. I'm really discouraged. I feel like a failure.

Steve,
This is the doctor that prescribed this for me:
Bioidentical Hormone Balance, Hormone Balance, Balance, Hormones, Breast Cancer, Natural Hormones

She's pretty much up on the cutting edge of all this stuff, so I do trust her. Unlike my regular GP who sometimes I feel I know more than. I know I don't, and I realize her hands are tied by "standard of care" dictates handed down by the insurance co. But still, it's aggravating dealing with her.

I got some good info from nonstickpam so I'm going to check it out. I need to get clear on why I'm taking this (I believe they told me adrenal fatigue) and why the 4 pm dose which is a pain. I can never remember to go take the darn pill at 4!!

I have to split my Medrol dose I take 2 mg. first thing in the a.m. and then 1mg. at 5:30, so I use my calendar reminder on my cell phone, otherwise I forget too.

I need to set my phone up for that, I guess. I was wondering how I could do it. Good idea!

That natural doctor you recommended looked good. It makes sense that women having difficulty with menopause or having it too early might want to support their adrenals better. It sounds like that doctor does that for you. I'm glad there are some wonderful professionals out there who are more knowledgeable than the average mainstream medicine doctors.

ITA!

It has taken me so long to find a good doctor with whom I have rapport. I am 7 years post-surgical menopause and for most of my married life (20 yrs) have also been under some very serious stress. I'm the perfect candidate for adrenal exhaustion.

I just wish she could be my primary care doc. That would be perfect
