sharp upper back pain (left side), dull pain lower down in rib area...
i've had this sharp almost constant pain in my upper back on the left side (right near the shoulder blade) since around last thanksgiving. i brought this up to my doctor earlier this year and he pretty much shrugged it off as nothing. i figured i was probably just overreacting (at the time i thought it could be something wrong with my lungs or heart) and just hoped it would go away... well i'm still dealing with this pain! only now i have a duller pain just a little lower (on the left side also) in my rib cage area also... it feels like it could be bruised.
i took a picture of my bare back last night and saw no markings. i'm trying to get back in to see a doctor as soon as possible about this but he won't be back in until tuesday and even if we can schedule an appointment, who knows when he'll actually be able to see me. does anyone have any idea what this pain could be from? i'm worrying myself sick searching google and have read everything from ulcers to hernia.. i personally think it could be hernia. i also have been having this on again, off again sharp pain around my bellybutton... which worries me about it possibly being my appendix. but the pain isn't so severe that i can't function (which i hear is what appendicitis feels like). ETA: i've also considered that maybe the pain in my abdomen could be from a hernia also? this has been going on for months as well (actually years, but i think it went away for a while.. but just recently it seems more frequent). i'm also very cystic and was recently diagnosed with PCOS a few months ago... wondering if that's related at all. when i had my CT scan, the doctor said the scan showed that i also had cysts around my liver but it was nothing to worry about. ugh, i feel like i'm falling apart.

I know you must be stressed, but relax and wait for your Dr. visit. If it gets too bad, you should go to the emergency room. Quite possible that it may be your gall bladder, when I had mine I had pain in my back, under my ribs and pressure in my shoulders. Hope you get to the Dr soon!

Honey, you sound just like me. After thousands of dollars worth of test and seeing numerous specialist, nothing was showing up but that didn't stop my pain. These days I am taking pain meds, seeing a pain specialist and have a nerve block scheduled. Doctors seem to think my pain is coming from damaged nerves due to shingles (neuropathic nerve damage) which is also often found with diabetics.
Hope you find your problem. ![]() |

thank you both....
JONAH'S GRANNY, i'm so sorry you've been dealing with the same thing. the diabetes thing makes a lot of sense to me... being pre-diabetic (insulin resistant from having PCOS), i'm wondering if that might be my case also. ETA: i do think i have problems with my nervous system.. arm goes numb sometimes and my feet are always cold. i don't think i have very good blood circulation. i sure don't want to have to go through the same tests and have them tell me they can't find anything wrong, but still have to pay the thousands of dollars.. especially with the type of insurance we have that doesn't do squat for us. i really appreciate both of your responses. i'm going to bring this up to the doctor whenever i can get in to see him. That is so weird you mentioning that pain on your back because I have that same type of pain too.
It seems like it started sometime after I started doing lc woe. It's near my shoulderblade, left side, around were my bra strap is, somewhere around that area. It comes and goes and especially when I'm cooking I guess because I'm standing, if I turn towards my left to do something, then I can feel it the most and it just lingers. It's strange because I've never had that pain before either. I'm not doing any type of exercise or strenous type of work. I just keep stretching that area hoping it will help. I don't think I'll go to the Dr just yet, I may wait and see if it gets worse. I have had my gall bladder removed and I can tell you that when I had pain from it, it affected my back and all away around my stomach. I'll tell you that gallbladder pain if very painful!!

I have the same exact type of pain or at least it sounds like you could be describing my pain. Also my hips are involved at times.
Well I have figured out that if I sit in the wrong kind of chair or sit at the computer too long leaning to the left on the chair arm or the desk, I create this condition. I limit my time at the computer and try not to lean to the left if I can help it. I sit up straight or lean to the right more. So I am saying that it is a ergonomically incorrect posture that is causing my pain. You might want to keep track of the times you are at the computer or sitting reading or watching tv and what your posture is to see if any of this applies. I have alleviated most of my pain and now just have occasional discomfort. It will keep you from having to spend thousands on tests if you can check this out before a DR's appt. Good Luck and I pray it isn't anything serious.

I'm not a doctor but your pain sounds like you're out of alignment. It's a muscle/bone/nerve thing. A great and inexpensive paperback book I recommend is "Pain Free" by Pete Egoscue. There's also a website at www.egoscue.com. Goodluck and hope you feel better soon.

I would talk to a chiropractor about it. I was in an auto accident but two years later I had these sharp pains in my rib area in the back start up. He actually had to adjust my rib cage, which he said was from the accident. I haven't had the pain again since then.

Don't put off going to the doctor. It could be very serious. I had pain a lot, sometimes in my upper right side, sometimes in the middle of my chest behind my breastbone and sometimes in my right shoulder and shoulder blade. I also had frequent pain or discomfort behind my belly button and a hard area that would often pooch out, that I could sometimes push back in. All of this was accompanied by frequent digestive disturbances. This went on for several years. I saw several doctors and didn't get the exact same diagnosis from any of them. The first one said it was a hiatal hernia. Then I was told I had the beginnings of an ulcer. Then, it was I made too much stomach acid and it was burning my esophagus. As for the abdominal discomfort and digestive problems, I was told IBS by one doctor, maybe celiac by another doctor and maybe crohns by another doctor. My sixth sense told me they were all wrong, but instead of pushing for answers, I stopped going to doctors about 4 years ago. I tried many diets. Some made me feel better and some made me feel worse. I could only do low carb for a short period of time before feeling bad again. I tried herbology and vitamin therapy. It didn't work, either.
In December, I woke up one morning feeling so bad I thought I was dying. I went to the emergency room and was told I was constipated. I got over that bout, but never felt well after that. In May, I got sick like that again. This time, I found a doctor who would see me, and I lucked out. This doctor said it was my gall bladder and sent me to a different hospital emergency room than the one I'd gone to in December. My gall bladder had abscessed and infected part of my liver. I also had a large abdominal hernia that was strangulating my bowel. I spent 8 days in the hospital -- the first 2 just to get the infection under control so I could have surgery. I have a 14" frankenstein scar running from my breastbone to above my pubic bone to remind me of what I've been through. What the surgeon did not find was a hiatal hernia or signs of celiac or crohns. Go to the doctor, and if the diagnosis doesn't feel right, don't accept it. Push for answers. I used to blindly trust doctors. I don't anymore. My current doctor and I argue a lot because I research every thing he says and every medication he wants to prescribe. God be with you. |

hey thanks you all... i still haven't been to our general practitioner (we're very short on cash lately and even with our insurance we can't afford the visit)... but i have to see my endocrinologist next week. i'd bring the pain back up to him but he told me last time to talk to my GP about it.
i also think that i could have a lot to do with my posture and the way i sit at the computer for hours at a time everyday. this computer chair i sit in, has a back on it that only goes halfway up to my back... i find myself slouching way down in the chair just to rest my back on it, the very top of the chair is rock hard and applies pressure to the very same spot on my back that i'm having pain in... so it could very well be from the way i'm sitting. thanks again everyone. i have a lot of different factors to consider. the good news is i haven't felt anymore 'dull pain' in my left rib area lately. |

Hello Zhak! I'm sorry to read about your pain. I actually had the same pain you're feeling this morning as I was stretching to get on my treadmill. The pain was there and still was able to do my regular jog. So the pain isn't as bad, but still, it's uncomfortable. Just last year, I as well as Diana up above had my gallbladder removed do to extreme pain, but this pain wasn't on my upper left side of my back, it was on the lower right part of my back as well as in my lower abdomen, so I really do not think you have gallstones. I don’t know what I have but just called in this morning and made an appointment. I will follow up with you'll to let you know what they tell me. Another thing that I've been experiencing that started about 1 1/2 months ago was the erg to itch all over my body and it usually triggers at night time. I goggled what this could be and I saw things like it could be the liver, stress among a lot of other things. I thought to myself that it might be stress since I've been going through so much crap. But then when I read the liver thing, I thought to myself that it might be that since of my incident last year with my gallbladder. When I had it removed, they said that if I would have waited any longer to go into the emergency room, something could have happened to my liver????? I ended up turning really yellow with some sort of jaundice. I hope you do feel better, so many of us are having difficult times right now financially, but don't put it off going to your doctors, seriously, don’t even think about the money, this is your life that could be in danger. I don’t want to scare you, but the money issue you can worry about later. God Bless you!

Ive noticed that no one has responded to this for a year - how is everyone feeling?
I've stumbled across this forum while doing a search for upper back pain. I've been in pain for months - first was gallbladder pain, removal May09. I've always suffered from GERD and have a hiatal hernia - doctors don't believe that i'm in pain.. I've gotten myself so worked up lately in the past few months, that I'm anxious... I've been given xanax and really dont want to start taking it. The upper back and shoulder pain is so horrible, i've been to the ER alot in the past year and 1/2. They should know me by name now hehe. I wish I could find out whats wrong - only thing they've found in the past month .. i've had an mri of my shoulder which showed a SLAP Tear. Going for PT and having surgery some time in April.. I wish you all the best of luck and wellness! |

My mom suffered from bad pain in her back and tummy. Went to the Dr. and they immediately wanted to take out her appendics.
She did not think that is what is was so wanted a second opinion. Went to a new Dr. and turns out it was Pancreatitis. |

Just a thought, since I'm not sure we're describing the same kind of pain:
Take a look at yourself in a mirror standing up. Is one of your shoulders higher than the other? I ask because I always had a lot of pain under my shoulder blade and my shoulders that were uneven...turns out it was herniated disks and arthritis in my neck vertebrae causing pinched nerves. I couple of adjustments from my chiropractor and I was pain free. It still happens on occasion. When it does, I go back in and get adjusted. Immediate relief. I now go every two weeks to maintain. |

I have the upper back in the shoulder blade pain from time to time and it feels like little pulses of pain. I worry about it sometimes because my upper back /shoulder blade hurt after I had my heart attack. The doctor did an ultraound of my gallbladder and no stones. The bacteria is negative so that wasn't an issue for me.
I have mild scolisis and I know one shoulder is lower than the other and I really think also that that is probably the reason I have the pain everynow and then. I usually make a once/twice visit to a chiropractor. |
