Newly diagnosised hypothyriod...m
Hi! I am an almost 35 yr old mother to 4 1/2 yr old triplets. I have polycyistic ovarian syndrome, no periods, etc. I did fertility treatments to get and stay pregnant. I have 2 m/c and asked my endocrinologist to do some immune testing and tested positive for anti-thyroid antibodies, but not signifigant enough to treat. I was thin at the time 120 at 5'6", never had a weight problem. Last summer I went to my PCP complaining about my lack of weight loss, bloatedness, and hair falling out. Full panel done, everything normal levels. I stopped taking the birth control pill in August because I was getting reoccuring yeast infections ans stopped having periods on the pill, tried metformin off and on for the PCO, thinking it was causing my hair loss.
About 2 weeks ago, I started losing my sense of taste- nothing can I taste. It feels like I have burned the tip of my tongue. I went to my PCP, he prescribed antibiotics incase it was upper respiratory and drew blood to test TSH. It came back at .019. I am now having a CT scan done of my pituitary gland and then an appt with my endo. What happens now, I feel like crying and just want to be able to taste anything but metal again...Could the bcp have been masking the thyriod problem? Jennifer 185/169/120

You don't say WHICH thyroid antibodies, and that TSH could be Graves OR Hashimoto's. So...look on YOUR COPY (you should always get a copy, after all, myself and lots of women with Hashimoto's were told insane crap like we 'didn't need treatment with those antibodies' for years and now have five, six autoimmune diseases...I'm disabled by mine now) and see if it says only anti thyroid microsomal or if it says anti TPO or if it says TSI.
You really need a thyroid doctor. Out of all the doctors who treate thyroid WELL, only 2% are endo's. Endo's do diabetes and PCOS, and so far I've met seven of them that don't DO thyroid care well. But...that's why we have lists of good docs. Suggest you read the rather LONG thread here on this board entitled "Thyroid tests are normal? Are you sure?". Hashimoto's needs treatment to not become OTHER autoimmune diseases down the road...(maybe the endo will just treat THEM too?? Jeez...). Hashimoto's hyPOthyroid can present as hyPER. It is called the 'rollercoaster' disease cuz you swing wildly back and forth between hyPER and hyPO. Sometimes for years if not treated. So, not treating the antibodies allows them to attack and destroy the thyroid. SOME very OLD practicing docs actually think that they will just treat when you have no more thyroid hormone at all (you know...when you weigh 300 lbs., have no hair and no libido). Pam

My anti-thyroid antibody (sp) was the perxiode (sp) one. I have no idea what is going on with my spelling tonight, I feel exhausted..sorry I was not too concerned with it at the time, we were just checking to see if it was causing the 2 miscarriages. I went on to get preg with quads, lost one at 8 weeks and successfullly carried ggg triplets. I really never gave another thought about it, e verytime I was tested my levels were normal, and I figured my symptoms were my PCO and insulin resistance. My insurance will not pay for the ct scan and I see my endo on Tuesday, Thanks for all the advice, I will keep you posted

"Normal" doesn't mean 'normal' if you are talking about TSH. And those antibodies would be for Hashimoto's. Because of Hashi's I had two stillborn (at term) and one miscarriage (and two live children). But they wouldn't treat me the entire time...they said 'Oh, your antibodies aren't very high'. Of course this WAS in the early 70's....and some docs are STILL practicing as if we are in the early 70's where the thyroid is concerned. Good luck.
