I haven't spent much time on a treadmill, but I have heard many runners say running outside is much harder than the treadmill, so I would think walking on a track would be more strenuous.

I think the results will be similar. I would like to add that there is some concern with running on artificial surfaces as compared to a neighborhood road that naturally twists and turns. When you run on an artificial surface certain parts of the muscle get worked very hard for the entire workout. But other parts do not get worked out at all. The natural bends and twists develop the whole muscle and provide rest periods as the surface changes. This matters because your unbalanced muscle then can, in effect, "tear" at itself when you encounter any uneven surface in real life. I know this wasn't what you asked but thought you could ignore me if you want
