Kismet, hope you get a great night's sleep tonight.

Paula, enjoy your vacation!

Karen, I hear meditation is great and have tried to meditate, but I've never been able to sit quietly and quiet my mind.... Maybe there is a secret to doing it.

Cheryl, how is your day going?

10,389 steps and 40 very active minutes. Moving my son into his college dorm tomorrow....he is a freshman......it will be an emotional day.

Meditation has always sounded like a good idea, but I only read and tried. This time, I am going to give it my best effort. Hope it helps with stress and sleeping. I will let you know if I get it figured out.........or if my brain gets the best of me.

Someone mentioned that YouTube has good introductory videos. Never had the time to check them out, but you've inspired me to give meditation another try. Now that I'm an empty nester and have free time after work....

Hi everyone, for some motivation and varying up our routine....from the Cooper Institute:
Quote:
In a recent article in the Journal of the American Medical Association, researchers reviewed the results of 26 studies in which pedometers or step counters were used. They found that using step counters was strongly associated with increases in physical activity. That is, people who used step counters increased their activity by over 2,000 steps compared to their own baseline level or compared to people who did not wear a step counter. In addition, using step counters was associated with reductions in body mass index (BMI), an indicator of body fatness, and blood pressure.
Quote:
Fun with Step Counters

Step Around Your Block

......Guess how many steps it is from your home to the end of your block.
......Check your step counter before and after you walk the distance. How close was your guess?
.......Try it again. How many steps does it take to go around your whole block?

Take a Cue for Physical Activity

.......Decide how many steps you want to have on your step counter by lunch time.
....... Check your counter at noon. If you haven’t reached your goal, take time during your lunch break to add some steps.
.......Set another goal for five o’clock. If you haven’t reached your five o’clock goal, the step counter will cue you to get moving!

One Step Counter, Two Friends

...... Ask a friend to join you. Walk for five minutes. Guess the number of steps you walked. Have your buddy guess, also. Check the step counter. Whoever comes closest to the actual number without going over gets to wear the step counter for the next 10 minutes.
......Guess the number of steps on the counter after 10 minutes. Continue on the rest of your walk. Make up different time intervals (three minutes, 11 minutes, etc.) for counting steps. Each time, the person who comes closest wins the right to wear the step counter.
At the end of your walk, who wore the step counter the most times?

I'm doing okay on vacation. When we get back to the house my husband drops me off at the top of the driveway and I walk down to the house. That is good for about 650 steps.
Today we hiked. Only 6000 steps but it was a "moderate" trail, so uneven, some hills...certainly not an easy 6000 steps.

Ooooo, Cheryl, no one can tell us now that extensive shopping is bad Great job!

I think I was coming down with something like sinus/throat because yesterday afternoon was the worst. On top of that, it was over 100 degrees here. I dragged myself to bed at 8:15, felt so yucky......Anyway.....only a bit over 8,000 steps yesterday.

Well, we need to make it through the day, and then - 3 days off!

Keep going, Paula!

I've been sick for the past 3 days. Only 8 K yesterday and 5.5 K steps today. I hope I feel much better tomorrow to resume my full walking routine.

10,000+ steps and 63 very active minutes. Sick with some sinus/throat bug which negatively affected my daily steps goal. Still sick today, my head feels like it's going to explode and my nose is stuffed, plus general malaise. Not pretty. I did 1,000 step spurts today and they added up to my goal.

Now off to rest and recuperate.

8085 today. Not too bad considering it was mostly done at rest stops on the side of the highway.
