Couch to 5k July Beginners

I have just done day 1 of C25k.

I am only going to use the treadmill at the gym and will take as long as I need.

I am 66 and have an arthritic knee that stopped me doing this after 7 weeks six years ago.

I now take megadoses of Glucosamine and am currently without pain, so I am giving this anoth shot.

Hopfully there will be some other July beginners who may join me.

Is it ok if I post? I'm not a July beginner, as I'm on week 3 day 1 as of tomorrow. There was another c25k thread but I think most of those people were at the end of the program. And I'm going to attempt to take it to 10k. I purchased the 10k app as it was the same price and takes you from couch to 10k.

I'd like to join!

I started running with C25K in 2008 and worked up to a couple of half marathons and was training for a full when I had quit running and eventually have surgery for a bone chunk under my achilles. Since then I have gained 50 lbs that I just couldn't seem to shake.

I finally got cleared to run again July 1 and did W1D1 July 2. I am scheduled for W2D1 tomorrow morning. I feel better already and am down a couple of lbs.

Glad to see more people joining! Hopefully we can have a good support group for c25k.

I had my first night run tonight. And let me tell you it was SO much easier than my morning runs! Even with all the stretching I do, I guess my muscles still weren't quite awake yet, lol. I think I'll keep up with the night runs unless it gives me insomnia. I just don't like daytime running as I hate getting hot. I think my times would be better though if my neighborhood wasn't so dark! (No worries, I live in a rural development so the only safety issue would be a wandering skunk!) Today was W3D2.

I havent been able to post due being without my laptop for a few days.

Unfortunately my back went into spasm on Friday, so no workouts since. I am hoping to run on Wednesday if the healing continues. I hate growing older!

Lovely to see a few of us posting together.

Last night was week 4 day 1 and I'm REALLY feeling it today, lol.

Apparently there is another nighttime exerciser in my neighborhood. He came up behind me and scared the bageebus out of me! I am quite easily startled, and wasn't expecting to see anyone else out that late. At least I was able to use that adrenaline in my workout!

Good morning, y'all! I have done C25K workouts (Week 1 & 2), but mostly have been doing my own thing -- running as long as I feel comfortable, then walking. The longest I've done so far is 3 minutes straight. I am going to restart the official program next week b/c I like the support.

The hardest part for me is the breathing, so I'm considering dialing back the speed (usually do 5.0 mph, but may try 4.8) to see if that helps. My legs felt good Wednesday, but my lungs felt on fire. lol

Have a great Friday!

I've been an on again/off again C25Ker now for three years, and I want to get back into it.. I have been dong my own thing like Jayce for a while now (I use Jeff Galloway's run/walk method to finish a half this past spring. I am starting on week 2 day 1 tonight. I just need to stay consistent. I, too, hate running in the heat here in Florida so I try to so it at dusk.

Btw, Jayce, I am exactly where you are with breathing. I can go five minutes but that is it, and don't ask me to do that mre than once a run...I have to stop and yawn just to catch my breath. If I go any slower, I will be stopped. I average a 13:30 mm at the moment. Reallllly want to increase that and my endurance!

Good luck guys!!

I hope you let me in too...I didn't start from week one in July, but I re-started in July (after more than a year lapse) at about week 5. I have been building up my activity for a few months and surprised myself with how I meshed back into the c25k routine.

My sister just attempted an Ironman and now several of us are interested in pushing towards that goal (although I personally am starting from very far away!).

I think it's wonderful that you are doing this and I wish you luck on the journey!

I just finished WK1D3 last night. Today my neck, lower back, and ankles hurt!
I am doing ok. Like Jayce said my legs are fine but my breathing is horrible. I am so out of breath after running for just one minute. I don't know my pace because I am running outside. I am also doing this at night. No way I would be able to do this when it is hot outside. The sweat was pouring off me...I am so outta shape!

Hello there!

Hi, could someone explain what a c25k is ? And how to do it, it sounds like something I might like to have a go at

It is a app for your phone or ipod that helps you learn to run a 5k. The app tells you when to walk and when to run. It also keep statistics for you too. It maps where you walked/jog/ran, how fast you went, how many calories you burned etc. You do it every other day for 9 weeks. By the end of the 9 weeks you should be able to run a 5k. Your work out alternates between running and walking. At the beginning you run 60 sec walk 90 sec. Their is also a 5 min warm up and a 5 min cool down. By the 9th week you run for 30 mins. You still have the 5 min warm up and cool down. The good thing about the app is that you can complete it at your own pace. If you want to repeat a day until you feel comfortable you can. Also, you can use the music on your phone or ipod with this app.

I've been slacking off on my running because of vacation (but have been getting plenty of other exercise!) I'm ready to get back on track with my running. I need to ease back into it as all the uneven beach walking has caused some joint pain.

I'll keep up with the c25k but I'm also going to be doing sprints to help with weight loss. I found a running for weight loss app which alternates walking/running/sprinting.... I'm sure it'll whip me into shape!

Hi guys! I just decided to check out the exercise board during lunch and was pleasantly surprised to find this thread. Wish I would have known about it earlier. I'm in the middle of week 7 using ease into 5k and ran for 26 minutes straight this morning. The two apps seem to be pretty similar and I can tell you that if you just keep at it the program will get you running longer & further than you thought you could! In those 26 minutes I figured the running portion (not counting the 5 min warm up & cool down) came in at 1.6 miles so only about half of a 5k at this point. I am slooooow, but avoiding injury and building endurance is my focus for now and I'm totally ok with being slow! I'm fighting my way back from a back injury and could not have imagined walking a mile at this time last year. I do have to admit that running has not helped break my stall like I was hoping, but I'm sure something will have to give and the scale will move eventually. In the meantime I'm amazed every time I finish a day of C25k! It sounds like a couple of you have done the program before, so you know what I mean. It works

Hello everyone! I love this program, it is my second attempt to complete. I was almost done last year until the temps where over 100. Good luck everyone! Nothing tastes as good as thin feels!
