10,000 steps per day for me!!

jeaniem 05-14-2013 10:54 AM

Just got my fitbit a few days ago and am amazed how well it has motivated me to move more. So far I have made the 10k+ steps daily. Today I have feeling is going to be really low as I forgot to put on until 12:30:annoyed:

Yes, I left mine in my shorts from the day before so there are times when that will happen. Just don't let it go through the wash. I've already lost 2 other pedometers that way!!

Here's what I've learned after using one for months:
  • 60 minutes hard cardio will get you about 6K steps.
  • A typical day at may office only yields 2-3K steps.
  • A day of chores (laundry, dishes, yardwork) will get you past 10K (yes I do that... it's a team effort in our house where both parents work full time.)

Tips:
  • Always park in the most remote parking spot at the store. Be happy and thankful you can walk without pain. I used to drive around the gym parking lot looking for a close spot then finally I said to myself, "this is ridiculous!" "I'm at the gym for fitness and I'm trying to figure out how to walk as little as possible in the parking lot!!!"
  • At the office, take the long route to the bath room. Get up every 15 minutes to half & hour and walk around....

jeaniem 05-14-2013 12:56 PM

Yes I am finding that I park far out as I tended to do anyway to avoid car dings, but now I am parking even farther out than before. Also I am taking the stairs a lot more as before I would let stuff pile up before and take fewer trips. I also used to think steps only counted if they were a "formal" workout, now I take casual walks more often.

Weekends are easier with chores, mowing grass and more time to just plain ole walk.

BTW- I went to the fitbit site and it allowed me to manually add an estimate of my steps that I lost today since forgetting to wear the fb. It was easy to estimate because yesterday and today were both work days where I take about the same number of steps. I guess I may be a little obsessed!

10k steps a day for me.

My challenge is still logging my food. Sigh....

All for some kind of a Fitbit challenge thread.

Great! I'll post my steps daily. I'd like to shoot for 10k. I know it will average out for me as I see that some days are more and some less than my goal of 10k.

LCfan03 05-15-2013 07:37 AM

yesterday was a good day! Yeah! Steps: 12,154 and my calorie deficit was about 600.

:-)

CTH 05-15-2013 12:25 PM

Yesterday squeeked by with 10,137

LCfan03 05-16-2013 07:18 AM

12,188 steps yesterday for me. Calories were under my goal for the day so was a good day. Unfortunately, scale hasn't moved for over a week. Grrrr. I notice that it tends to happen when I ramp up my exercise though. Usually it stays the same for even a week or two and then it will suddenly go down. I think I've read that when you really work out hard, your muscles retain a lot of water as they repair themselves. At least I'm hoping!

jeaniem 05-16-2013 10:46 AM

I am trying to find my step count for yesterday but the dashboard site is down right now.

CurveControl 05-16-2013 11:08 AM

I rarely make over 5000 steps on a non exercise day. On an exercise day I hit 10000. I am trying to work up to about 7 thousand on non workout days and 12 on work out days.

jeaniem 05-16-2013 11:26 AM

10,701 steps yesterday. Gonna be around 5k today I am tired!

Molly
I'd like to do more steps on non-exercise days as well.

Psmileyf 05-16-2013 11:33 AM

I aim for 7500/day.

I am at 4487 right now.
On a weekend I get to 12-15,000.

I started around 4000/day and added steps in increments of 500 until I worked myself up to 7500.

CTH 05-16-2013 01:25 PM

12,649 yesterday for me.

Psmileyf 05-16-2013 05:14 PM

12620 today. Good for a weekday for me.

LCfan03 05-17-2013 06:31 AM

Yesterday was only about 4k for me but it was a planned rest day. I had been working out fairly hard and have 3 hard days in a row coming now this weekend. My caloric deficit was still about 300 so I think I am ok. I finally went down a lb on the scale. Woot!

LCfan03 05-18-2013 04:45 AM

13,991 for me yesterday but it was a running day. I think my calories were good but I haven't tallied them up yet. Unfortunately I ate tortilla chips and cheese dip along with gluten free beer for dinner which isn't exactly the most healthy thing!

jeaniem 05-18-2013 08:59 AM

Only have been getting about 5k or so the last two days. I tend to overdo on some days which seems to burn me out and then end up lower the following days. Probably need to find a happy medium.

Today will be high heading out to mow grass soon and will walk with DH later.

LCfan03 05-19-2013 06:39 AM

jeaniem,

I think you should be focusing on the average for the week. I also have days that are well over 10k because I'm on a running training program and then I have days that are intentionally under. I will say I have tried to take at least 15 min every lunch hour at work and just walk - nothing super fast - just walk. I do it outside if it is nice and if not, there is a big floor where I just walk around in circles. It gives me a couple thousand steps.

I agree with focusing on the week.

15,149 yesterday.
I will be happy to get to 7,500 today.

jeaniem 05-19-2013 04:28 PM

10,607 yesterday.

LCfan03 05-20-2013 12:05 PM

So bummed.... I lost my fitbit! I wore it yesterday for my run and then I worked out at the gym. At some point I took it off to shower and then later that day I remembered I never put it back on again. So, i went and found it and noted it was at around 8k steps at that moment. I have no recollection if I put it on or put it down but I didn't have it on when I went to bed last night and I looked everywhere today and can't find it. Argh! This is my second one in less than 6 months because I washed on in the laundry in December. I'm starting to think they are almost too small! (I really hope it shows up.)

Psmileyf 05-20-2013 01:20 PM

If you have a laptop, walk around with it and see if it updates. If it does, then you know you are within 15 ft of it.

Psmileyf 05-20-2013 01:20 PM

I was at 7511 yesterday.

I am working the snack bar at the baseball field tonight, so I hope to get a lot of steps in.

LCfan03 05-21-2013 08:30 AM

What's it called when you are looking for something and you look at it 20 times and don't see it? And then the 21st time.... it is right there?

Old age????

CTH 05-22-2013 12:18 PM

5-17: 14,893
5-18: 8,932
5-19: 10,858
5-20: 8,029
5-21: 10,038

Some days > 10K steps, some days lower. Average is still > 10K.

Lost two in the wash... not "Fitbit" brand though but still $35 each...

Psmileyf 05-22-2013 12:35 PM

8526 yesterday.

I am at 5745 now, but I am doing 3 hours in the snack bar tonight, so I am hoping to get over 10,000.
