I want to run/jog consistently

again, but fear injury or damaging my joints. This type of exercise lifts me up like no other.

I used I think I couldn't do it. Was scared to death. I started with the couch to 5k program on coolrunning.com. I did not deviate from the recommended schedule and used time, not distance. Except for needing to ice one knee a couple times the first couple weeks, have had no problems whatsoever. Now I can run for miles. Don't overtrain, don't overtrain, dot overtrain! It's tempting but Don't do it!! That is the reason I could never run before. Was doing too much too soon. Please see a doc first and get the go-ahead if you feel the need.

I have done C25K and had minimal problems other than mild shin splints and a little knee soreness, I guess I am just concerned that at 51 yrs. old walking may be healthier for my joints. I love how I feel after jogging though! My husband's side of the family has many runners, we have watched them suffer through many injuries. One of them a very thin 53 year old female just recently gave up running after 20+ years, she made a 1/2 marathon time goal that she had been reaching for and then quit due to achy knee joints.

Overtraining leads to injury. I'm thinking as long as you are careful not to do that and listen to your body...keep on keeping on. If it hurts though, that's not good at all. Don't run through the pain.

Second the don't overtrain advice. And also make sure you are wearing the correct shoes, you need to specialist shop where they can check your gait and recommend shoes for you.

I started running in 08 in my normal trainers just to see if I could do it, ended up in physio with really bad shin splints. Then got some proper shoes and started again 2 years ago and have had no pain, the odd ache after a long run (long for me, trained for a 10k last year) so about 5 miles. I'm back to 4 miles now and no pain at all. I also have a slight curvature of the spine which means all my joints are slightly out of alignment, so if I can do it - you can too

Hi

Check out Jeff Galloway's programs. I had been a 'steady' runner for years and then osteoarthritis kicked in and made it a little difficult. Galloway does a walk/run method that is wonderful and his phone apps are great. You can set the walk/run ratio however you want. I do a one min. walk/one min. run which at my older age works for me. I run on dirt also which I feel is easier on my joints. I used to scoff at people who walked at all during their runs but now I love it. For me it's all about being out there and getting those endorphins going!

I am/was using Galloway's programs alternating between the 30:30 and the 1:1. I got up to 3 miles and 1.25 of this was jogging with no walking last Sunday. I felt fine on Monday but then starting have pain in left knee on Tuesday so I rested until today and did a 2 mile interval walk which triggered the pain by the end of the walk. Now I am hobbling around and quite bummed out. Needless to say I didn't get my feel good endorphins going. I love how I feel after jogging, walking just not have the same feel good effect for me.

A few thought on the possibilities.....

What kind of shoes are you running in and how did you come to own them? Shoes can make a WORLD of difference.

What kind of surface are you running on? Concrete is the worst and asphalt is second. If you are running on the edge of a road, the camber (slope for water run-off) can mess up your gait. When you feel up to running again, try to find a soft surface. Like one of those squishy tracks some high schools & colleges have, or a dirt path.

Maybe check out some form advice like ChiRunning. Maybe you are running with a hitch in your gettalong.

I think they are well worth it myself. Once you find a shoe you like you can look for deals on the internet.

I haven't had a gym membership in years. I think I have saved more than enough for shoes.

For now I am assuming it is better to walk as I am finding that my knee stiffens up when I sit and it is warm to the touch. I can't take any meds because I am having a colonoscopy on Wednesday.

INVEST IN SHOES! I swear by my Brooks. I can normally find them on sale at City Sports (online) bc I live in WI and we don't have that store.

Otherwise... Osteo bi-flex, and epsom salt baths.
