hello everyone

I am new to the forum...i do mostly callanetics...

I recently had a baby then broke my ankle...was in cast for 6 weeks...

so totally out of shape...going to physical therapy to get movement back in ankle.

just wondering...how do u guys calculate how many miles walked...

and does it really help lose weight? i can not run yet...so am thinking of walking to get some weight off ...till i am in better shape to do cardio. do u guys do fast walking? or just normal.

thanks

Hi anonymouse - cute name! Walking will help you regain your fitness and is much easier on the body after an injury than other exercise.
You can calculate miles with a pedometer, or drive your car around your planned route, or go online and use a walking gps, or figure your minutes and divide it out that way. Lots of methods! Doesn't have to be exact.
We walk at different rates. A 20 minute mile is a simple brisk walk, a 15 minute mile is a fast powerwalk, and everything in between. Hope this helps you get started and welcome to the forum and our walking thread. Congrats on the baby!

I use a FitBit to calculate my miles.

I don't know if it will actually help me lose weight, but it helps me feel better about myself, which makes me less likely to eat crappy food, so in a round about way it will help me with my weight.

Found the March thread!

Thanks Shunsweets, I found the March thread! I've decided to do every other day four days a week but I'm still glowing from my 2 mi. walk/jog yesterday! Was so very happy to have Jeff Galloway in my ear again pushing me on! Just a little sore so now my goal is to be realistic and consistent...I'm just glad to be back out there after my cold and lay off (and a little procrastination I'm looking forward to checking in with everybody and my goal is to get 8 miles a week in, 32 miles a month especially now that we're having gorgeous weather finally!

Plus four today outside in the BEAUTIFUL weather. I'm so thankful for the sun and heat. We are going to Silver Dollar City tomorrow so I am sure to walk a lot.

I use a Garmin GPS that my husband gave me. It just looks like a somewhat bulky watch - very convenient and fun to use.

But before I had that, I timed myself walking to a point that I knew was exactly one mile from my front door. That took me 20 minutes, so from then on, I just estimated 20 minutes per mile.

I was already in maintenance when I started walking, so I can't really speak to the weight loss. But I will say that I think it would help you recover more quickly, help you stay in shape until the point where you can resume your preferred method of cardio. And I think the psychological/emotional benefits are tremendous as well. It's definitely a worthwhile activity.

I just walk at a comfortable pace - somewhat brisk but not a fast power-walk. But this is just an individual choice. Do whatever works for you!

Had to take rest days yesterday and today because of a minor medical procedure, but I think I should be back into it tomorrow. In the meantime, just wanted to check in and see how everyone was doing. Doing great - as usual! KUTGW!

Hi Greta. Glad you will be back soon.

Plus 6 for me today at a very fast power walk and even a few jogging intervals to keep up with the group at the park. Phew I'm tired!

Best laid plans...

Hi Walkers! I think I'll check back into the group when I can be more of a consistent walker! I just don't seem to be able to get into a good routine right now and I get too disappointed in myself when I can't post that I got some mileage in! Happy walking everyone and keep up the good work!
