Disabled & fat...

I have Multiple Sclerosis... in the later Secondary Progressive phase. Just getting dressed can be frustrating, time consuming & not compatible with public changing areas. I can stand & walk a few steps (really should use the cane or walker as I've had too many falls).
The old me used to be fit & athletic but that me only exists in the picture album.
It is very hard to lose weight by food control alone. I try to keep up with my PT stretching but not enough.
I don't know what more to say...

Flagman,
I'm really sorry to hear this. It sounds terrible & frustrating, especially knowing what you could do. Not knowing your situation, I wonder if you've tried yoga?
Also, if you're looking to drop pounds, I'd like to suggest you take a look at the JUDDD board. Read a bit about this WOE (way of eating) and see if you think it's something you can do.
I started Atkins Induction on 1-1, and switched to JUDDD on 1-21. I've lost a total of 11.4# since 1-1, 7.4# of which were on JUDDD. And this is with very little exercise. Its a slower WOE but, in my opinion, more sustainable. Many of the members on the JUDDD boards have lost upwards of 50-100 pounds WITHOUT EXERCISE!!
Pop on over, read some of the "newbie" threads with some of the more frequently asked questions, google JUDDD diet to see the original plan's website.
Just a thought, your story breaks my heart.
Be thankful every day for what we have, we never know when we may lose it.

I hope being a member of this board will be helpful to you. Losing weight is possible even if you cant exercise.

so sorry you have this trial, it must be awful! *big hug* I have a multitude of serious medical problems myself, and while not the same as yours, I can relate. One thing I want you to understand is that YOU CAN LOSE A LOT OF WEIGHT WITHOUT ANY SPECIAL EXERCISE. I know you are posting on this forum, so I guess you want to exercise, but really, understand, while exercise is important in a zillion ways, study after study shows it does not help weight loss. I lost 130 lb without any special exercise. I mean, just dragging that ol' body around was enough!

Please concentrate on what you CAN do rather than what you CANNOT do. A serious, committed low carb eating plan is amazing. Good luck!

Thanks for the Welcome... more like a homecoming as I had good success on the 72 Atkins plan years ago... I got tempted & fell off the wagon & inevitably gained nearly all of it back. And my activity level has plummeted the last couple of years as my disabilities have progressed.

You might want to research Dr. Terry Wahl's protocol. She's successfully dealt with her progressive MS using a paleo diet plan plus supplements designed to boost mitochondrial activity (if I'm remembering correctly). Good luck to you, Flagman.

Flagman, sorry to hear about your challenges. I would second the suggestion about yoga.
I had a student with rapidly progressing MS and yoga worked well for her and swimming too. With yoga, don't be afraid to shop around for the right class and explain your limitations. Can you do a bit with hand weights, or stretching bands?

There's a PBS program that has been on for years and years called "Sit and Be Fit" and there are dvd's of it as well.
Very gently program for people with limited mobility and disabilities.
There are different versions, some have more standing (holding onto a chair) than others, so be sure to read the dvd details before you buy or rent.

I have CFS/ME & Fibromyalgia so can completely understand how you feel not being able to exercise. On my good days I have to take things slow, on my bad days I can't get out of bed. period.
I've put on nearly 5 stone since 2009 when I first became ill and am determined to beat it, I know how hard it can be and how easy it is to 'fall off the waggon'.

I saw this article about hot tubs and diabetes. It looks like using a hot tub on a regular basis has some of the same benefits as exercise. But I would cauction you to check this out with your Dr. I have seen a couple of articles cautioning diabetics about using this. Well it's something to think about but but it's not without some risk. Again if you have diabetes or heart problems
this might have it's own risks.

Hey Flagman!

I have had amazing results with Callanetics. I, myself, have cataplexy (sudden onset of partial or full paralysis), and for the days I have a mild attack, although I can't walk or use my hands well, I can still do some Callanetics, because it is promoted for us to do what we can do. For me, if I can do any at all, it helps me get past the helplessness and frustration I can experience during times like these. I'm not saying Callanetics is easy, I'm saying it's as hard as you make it, and it's easy to find ways to alter the moves for what you're capable of. In fact, I think a lot of it has to do with intentions.

Just so you know, Callanetics is a series of small pulsing movements of only .5"-1", and it can be quite magical in its results.
