Walking 10K steps a day - anybody doing this?

How's it working for you? Any tips?

I figure I like walking and I like getting outdoors, and I'm looking for something simple to do to get moving more.

I do/did. Right now I'm dealing with a hip and knee injury, so will have to work back up to it. I wear a pedometer also and log miles/steps every night. I can't walk outside right now because of uneven ground, so I walk an indoor track or at least put on a walking video. I love the feeling when the pedometer hits 10,000.

I know what you mean! I jogged in place for about 300 steps during Downton Abbey last night, just to make sure and hit 10,000.

Today I took a walk at lunch, so now I'm up to 6500 for the day so far.

Before you got injured, did you take set walks, or just try to add steps in when you could?

Hi!

I walk 10,000 steps every single day. There is the odd time that I am short, but then I just make it up the next day.

I definitely feel better but my level of fitness has NOT improved! I know this because I play ice hockey every week and my breathing & endurance has not improved at all since I started.

I walk from the bus stop instead of taking the subway. I take a walk after lunch to burn off my meal. I always walk to the printer when I print something instead of printing everything at once and only going once. I will also walk in place while watching TV (or stretch if I'm already at 10,000).

I have gotten so used to it that I have just started working out this week at the gym :)

Good luck,

Impressive, Dianne :). It's great that you've made it such a habit - that's my goal, too.

I've been really successful this week, making or exceeding 10K on 5 out of 7 days.

Unforeseen circumstances prevented much walking today - I only made 2500!

I'm going to get back into using my pedometer. I exercise regularly but that's about the only physical activity that I do and one of my goals is to become more active in general.

I also discovered back a few years ago when I was really into using the pedometer that it didn't really help my fitness level either, I guess since you are not in your aerobic range just walking around with it, but just being more active in general makes you feel better and does burn more calories than sitting.

Since I do an hour of water aerobics 5x per week, I'm going to set my goal a bit lower for those days since I can't wear it in the pool.
