has anyone dond couch to 5K?
 
I am not a runner, never have been, but would like to participate in the 5K runs they have around here, also think it would be good for me. Has anyone done it, and how was it?

Yes, I have and I would totally recommend it! I'm currently doing a 10k program that's very similar with intervals. One recommendation, don't try to run fast. During your "running" intervals, a SLOW jog is perfect. And repeat workouts if you aren't ready to move on. Get some good shoes!

Races are super fun!

I did the program a while back and did one 5K race. My goal was to do be able to do a 5k by the time I turned 50 and I did. After finishing the C25K plan and doing the one race, I just kind of lost interest and now mostly walk, but will occasionally do walk/jog intervals. When i do get the urge to try it again I usually end up with achy joints and a sore lower back, so I guess I kind of feel like I want to do what hopefully my body will allow me to do for many many years and that is probably just going to be walking in my case. It is a great program and works just like it says! Give it a try you might end up being a marathoner some day!:)

I've done it! It totally got me started running years ago. I went from "I'm don't run unless people are chasing me." to loving it! I've redone it a couple of times when I've taken long breaks from running, or to improve my speed/intensity. I highly recommend it. The progressions are completely on point; I didn't feel like it pushed me too hard. If you use any running apps like MapMyRun or RunKeeper, you can input the intervals and paces.

yes!! there are some really great blogs out there that already have put the time and effort into making a music mix for you. the song lengths are just the right intervals and make time go super fast!!! Just do a google search for couch to 5K mp3 or itunes. GOod luck!

Yes, I am going to do it. I will start mid February because it is way too cold right now. I went for a walk today and my ears froze and were numb for a half an hour.

I did the couch to 5k thing several years ago, and ran (if you could ever call it that) two 5ks. Before that, I had a personal saying, "If you ever see me running, look for the bear, because there will be one behind me". I stopped running when I changed jobs about two years ago, and I've gotten big again. I'm now working out three days a week at the gym, including at least 5k on the elliptical and treadmill. Woops, that's more info than you wanted...
Couch to 5k was a great way or me to go from (in my case my recliner) to being able to actually run a 5k. What I did was a program called "No Boundaries" and the coaches were a big help.

I am ging to start soon too! I personally have found myself saying for far too long "I can;t run". Bull!! I CAN run. I choose not to. I may not be able to run a 5k today. But I can walk. And i can walk a little more tomorrow. And in 2 months, I can walk and run. so I am working on my positive self talk, and this is part of it. I CAN do a 5k. And it all starts with a step! I downloaded the app today. Right now i am working on starting back with my cardio program, and as soon as the weather gets a little warmer I am doing it.

I am kinda in the same boat. I am dying to try a 5 km run but am scared I'll make a fool of myself. I am currently "training" if you want to call it that. I attempt to run ( I say "run" but at a speed of 5mph makes my short legs move when others call it a fast walk!) 5 km a day on the treadmill but after the first day my legs are so tired! I do run each day but each day after the first tends to only being 3 km's. I take saturday and sunday off because I work a 48 hour shift each weekend. Any recommendations on the best ways to train and increase/maintain endurance??

C25k turned me into a runner. I used to dread any form of running, and now my crazy butt gets all geared up and runs outside during the cold Chicago winter because I crave it.

One note of advice to the soon-to-be runners...don't judge your success on your pace. Judge your success on reaching your goal. I have very long legs, and on the treadmill I normally stay at a 5mph pace. If I go faster, my knees hurt, I get shin splints, I can't breathe and I have no desire to run anymore. At my pace, I'm comfortable and my run is enjoyable and the most important part is that I want to do it again; and I reach my goal.

I will definately check the C25k program out. I know nothing about it at the moment but will check it out. My problem is that I lam loving running right now almost too much and dont want to take a day of rest but my legs are so tired that I cant achieve the distance I wanted to when I started. I have a phobia of running outside so I want to build my endurance so I can be more confident this spring. I have great trails afound my house.

I graduated from C25K in June of 2009. I had to repeat week 3 at least 3 times and also week 5. My final run was ugly and I barely finished it. However, I finished and my first timed 5K was around 35 minutes. Since then I have been able to whittle that down to sub 25 and also finished several other races including Ironman last year. I still look back at this program as the catalyst for all of my fitness successes.

If I could offer one piece of advice it would be to follow the plan as it's written. If you finish a workout and think there is still more in the tank stop anyway. Just because your heart, lungs and muscles say OK does not mean that your joints are on board yet. The goal is to get everything to build in sync which will minimize the risk of injury.

If you have a smart phone (android or iphone), you can download the C25K app which will let you play your own music while tones overlay at the times to walk/run. Find a soft track or park to run on starting out your shins and joints will thank you. Hard to finish the program if you are sidelined with pain or injury.

Being able to set up your music to pace has me excited! I NEED misuc and it is what keeps me moving...I could be done and dead tired and then a songs comes on I love and I all of a sudden find the energy to go on. I plan to start the c25k on Monday as I work a straight 48 hour shift this weekend (as with every weekend!) I even went out and bought myself some new running shorts.

Isn't it a little cold in Canada to go running in that outfit? I run outside in all sorts of bad weather but when it's down to the teens like it is today I will guarantee you will see very little exposed flesh on me other than my eyes and maybe part of my nose.

LOL yesssss way to cold for this! I am planning on doing the treadmill version of the c25k. I have never owned running shorts so I thought it was time!
BTW the pic is way larger then I expected it to be, was hoping for more a thumb nail but the editing on this forum sucks!!

You should join in on the C25K thread! Theres a few of us that post runs and struggles. We are all at different levels of the program so its nice to hear about others progress.

I did the program starting just after Christmas this year and ran my first one in Feb, 38:05. Ran my second in March, 42:38 (couldn't train or run between the two due to a medical issue :( ).

The fiance and I are planning on running one a month till the wedding in August so the C25K was a great start/building block for it. The smart phone app is definitely the way to go.
